—It will be observed that our
notes this week ere dated from a
different point from whidi we hate
formerly written—Lois. This ia tbs
name suggested for the new postof-
flce, which efforts are.being made
to establish at Judge Connell's mill,
nine miles south of Nashville. It is
a beautiful location, and a place of
some trade, there being one dry
goods store and one grocery. The
name selected is French, sigoyfyiug
beautiful, delightful, and we think
very appropriate. A petition ia
being gotten up and will be for
warded to our representative, Capt
Turner, as soon as Congress assem
bles.
—Our worst fears have been real
ized. Judge B. F. Lindsay ^is no
more. In his death our cornty has
lost one of her best citizens, and a
vacancy made in the Ordinary’s of
fice that will be hard to fill. Judge
Lindsay only held the office ten
months, but during this short time
be gave entire satisfaction, and
proved by the impartial manner in
which he conducted the business of
the office that if he had been spared
he would have-been second to none
who have held the poaition since
the formation of the county. Judge
Lindsay was in his sixtieth year,
was a kind father and an affection
ate husband. But hs ia gone, and
to his stricken, sorrowing family
we tender our heartfelt condolence
in this their sad bereavement.
—The greatest difficulty we have
to contend with in our bachelor
life, ia the scarcity of buttons on onr
shirts.
—The ginning of long cotton has
not fairly commenced in this coun
ty. It will probably be the 1st of
March before all it giunol and
placed on the market.
—Should the weather turn sud
denly warm, there will be consider
able loas in the quantity of syrup
made. A great many had not com
menced to boll, aud their cane was
standing in the patch when the late
freeze came.
—The election for Ordinary comes
‘off the 14th of December. By that
time we expect to have several can
didates in the field. Mr. J. S.
Lindsey, deputy, and son of the late
Ordiuaty, we loarn, is a candidate,
to carry out the request of his
father, that he be elected to fill the
unexplred term for which be was
elected. Col. H. T. Peeples and
Mr. W. H. Griffin, wo also learn, are
candidates. All three are honora
ble, high-toned gentlemen, and
either will fill the office with honor
to the county.
—Tho funeral service of Mrs
Rachel Nash was conducted Inst
Sunday at the family burial ground,
near Mrs. Pegg Andorson’s, by Rev.
John Vickor, of Coffee county. The
subject was selected from Math, xxv
and 34th verse. Tho speaker paid a
noble tribute to the dead, and ad

Reform the Fences!
The New York Sun of last Monday
in an editorial on this subject, says:
Somebody has made a calculation
showing that the money invested in
fences in the United States amounts in
the aggregate to more than the nation
al debt. These fences, morover, most
be renewed on tho average onee in
ovciy ten years. They are growing
more expensive with the scarcity of
timber and the increasing demand for
more important purposes. Some sub
stitute must be found. Wire is exten
sively used, but Ihcro are serious ob
jections to it In ail its forms.
It seems froi# the evidenco that is
bsing adduced by tho dofenso in tho
Guiteau trial, that not only the assassin,
but his whole family,' including his sis
ters, his cousins and his aunts, aro non
compos mentis. Writs of lunacy
ought to be sued out against everyone
of them with as little delay as possible,

—There has been a great deal aaid
and written in tbs praise of Uie ebu-
fas as tho best crop for fattening
bogs; that hog* will eat them in
preference to anything else. Our
experience, and we have been a
dose observer this fail and winter,
is, that they prefer pinders and po
tatoes to them. We have seen hogs
turned into a field in which all
three were growing, and find that
the cbnfas was left uneaten until the
pinden and potatoes are gone.
—The lands in the vicinity from
where we write are broken, with
red day toil, and more productive
than those around Nashville. They
are better adapted to the culture of
long cotton than any we ate ac
quainted witn in the connty. We find
the people here like they are in oth
er portions of the county, kind and
hospitable. The farmers are hope
ful of soon extricating themselves
from the embarrassmentswhicb have
befallen the planters of Southwest
Georgia. Aa a general thing, they
have made pretty good crops, and
the larger portion of them have
a sufficiency of bread and meat to
last them through.
