It has been remarked that, owing to
New Year’s, the liquor 'dealers ex
pect but li'tle trade for the first two
weeks in January. After the expira
tion of that time, however, they say
the “wanderers”—those who have
“sworn off”—will return.
It is now intimated that Itoscoe
Ooukling will be a candidate for Gov
ernor of New York at the next elec
tion. It is claimed that if he enters
the field ho will be backed by Arthur
and Walt street as no Gubernatorial
candidate has been in years.
Washington, who became President
in his fifty-seventh year, selected the
youngest group that ever was collect
ed around a President. Hamilton
was thirty-two, Knox thirty-nine,
Randolph thirty-six, and Jefferson
forty-six, the average being thirty-
eight years of age.

The Sparta Ishviaelile advances a
good idea when it says that Georgia
landlords should “make a change in
the conditions on which they rent
their lands to tenants. It is custom
ary now to take pay for rent almost
solely in cotton. As a consequence,
provision crops are almost entirely
neglected. By requiring at least a
portion of rent to bo paid in corn, oats,
wheat, meat, poas, potatoes or other
provisions, it would become absolute
ly necessary to pay more attention to
provision crops. 1 ’
Qeite.vu’s case is stated in a nut
shell by a New York gentleman, who
in the Tribune, commenting on the
“inspiration 1 ’ plea, says: “Let us hear
what a writer, acknowledged by the
whole Christian church to be inspired,
has to say on this point: ‘Let no man
say when he is tempted, I am tempted
of God, for God cannot be tempted
with evil, neither teinpteth He any
man. Butevery man is tempted when
he is drawo away by his own lust and
enticed. Then when lust hath con
ceived, it briugeth forth sin; and sin,
when it is finished, bringeth forth
death.—St. James i, 13, 14,15:’
According to the New York Com
mercial Bulletin this has bean a los
ing year for fire insurance companies
as a whole. That paper says “although
a few companies will be able to report
an increase of business and a gain in
surplus, the average results of the
year are certain to show a loss. It
has been a year of unusually heavy
fire losses—which fact, added to the
prevalence of low rates and high ex
penses, has left little or nothing of the
premium iucorae to carry forward.
And, in this general discounting of
hope, the foreign companies, for once,
participate very fully, according to
their own admission.”
United States Marshal Henry will
go before the House Committee to
audit the expenses of the last illness
of President Garfield, after the holi
days, and, in Mrs. Airfield’s name, ask
that Dr. Boynton and Mrs. Edson be
placed on a plane with the other doc
tors in the distribution of rewards,
and that all others who nursed her
husband receive consideration. Mrs.
Garfield thinks that those who minis- ,

be as well treated as the doctors who 1

“Does yonr father keep a dog?”
These words, uttered with the sim
ple earnestness that showed how
deeply their fall meaning was felt
by him who spoke them, fell from
(he lips ofEthelbert Dooley 1 , as he
looked tenderly in the fair face of
Rosalind Mahafly. They were at
the matinee, and a dull pain stole
into the girl's heart, as-she shifted
the last caromel in the box over to
the starb jard side of her pretty
mouth. “Ethelbcrt does not lore
me,” she said softly to herself, while
a look ot pain whitened for an in
stant with a deathly pallor the pure
ingenue face, and the shapely hand
grasped more tightly the dainty silk
parasol that served alike to keep off’
son and wind from the lithe form.
“All gone,” she murmured sadly—
“every blamed one,” feeling earn
estly with her taper fingers in ev
ery corner of tbe empty {box, and
then a look of sweet content spread
over her features as she placed her
hand in the pocket of her sealskin
sacqno, only to be sneceedcd by a
dull, dazed expression of grief aud
anguish.
She had lost her chewing gum.
“You look ill, darling,’’ whisper
ed Ethelbcrt, as the curtain went
down at the close of the first act;
“try some of these,’ 1 holding out- a
paper of peanuts.
With a glad look of love in her
beautiful Brown eyes Rosalind
turned to him and said: “I catu

Such a case would be sad enough
under any circumstances, but many
things conspired to make this one
more than ordinarily pitiful. She
had but recently come to Fargo, and
bad already won many friends by
her intelMgence and unusually amir
able and attractive qualities. She
died among comparative strangers,
though friends; but another fact
added- pioguancy to the sorrow
which her. fate must excite. Miss
Price was to have been married in a
short lime to Charles Scott, long the
leading surveyor in the Bl tck Hills.
Last Satuiday he reached here, full
ofa'snong man’s love and hope.
They were to have gone on their
wedding tour to visit the home and
family of the young bride at Perth,
Ontario. Now her bridal robes will
bed; shroud, and instead of visiting
the loved home of her childhood as
a joyous bride, leaning upon the

bereavement her sister, Mrs. Lamont
and her angnished husband that
was to have been, will have the
heartfelt sympathy of the whole
community.
