It was jnsl one year ago to-day

was made, is a lictiun so far as the
wm il “Dt-ath’’ is is concerned, and
lie is at a loss to understand bow the

lated. Gen. Lee gives ti e follow-
ng narrative of the circumstances.
On the lOih of November, 1871,
General Winder, with his staff, visi-
tad the officers’ prison and read to
WO.TIAN,
the prisoners an order from Ben
jamin, the Con federate States Secre
tary of War, directing the selection
officers of highiest rank, to beheld
as hostages for the officers and crew
of the letter of marque “Lady. Jeff

piracy in a United States court.

Atlanta Constitution.
Considering the tendency of oar
native American sharpers towards
invention, it is a little singular that
the marriage insurance business has
not been brought to the attention of
n gullible public long ago We do
not make this statement in the spirit
of complaint, however. During the
few months these insurance swindles
have been operating they have been
driven out of several Northern and
Western States, including even New
Jersey, but they have taken up their
abode in the South, and now have
footholds in Louisiana, Mississippi,
Alabama and other States. If we
are not mistaken they have tven ex
tended their operations to Georgia.
The nature of the swindles was com
pletely exposed in Pennsylvania,
where the .insurance commissioner
denounced them. They have also
been vigorously denounced by the
insurance commissioner of Michigan.
The ^swindles were utterly routed in
the courts of Pennsylvania, Judge
Henderson, of the twelfth judicial
circuit, saying, when asked to issue
a chart for one of the concerns: “We
are not satisfied these associations
aro not injurious to the community.
They are not calculated to inspire
confidence in the marriage relation.
Its purity is the rockbed of society*
Neither the welfare of the State or
the community demands such bene
fit or encouragement as is here
sought to be given to the individual.
It does not add to, but takes away
front the sanctity of a holy ordinance.
As a civil contract, the highest con
sideration should be mutual love and
affection. It is degraded by any
other, and the idea of mutual b nefit
and protection in the more prescrib
ed by certificates of membership and
assessments upon tbe members, is, in
our opinion altogetber cbiinercal.
No practical or beneficial result can
flow from it. A premium upou mar
riage may be the price of virtue.
Ncitlior the wants of community,
tbe good of society, or the welfare of
the individual require any such or-
itizalions. On the contrary, we
eve that in Ihe end they will
prove subversive of virture and
good morals.’’
Notwithstanding tho publicity
that has been given to the various
exposures of these swindles, they
appear to flourish in the South, es
pecially in the Southwest, where the
impels teem with advertisements
calculated to meet the eyes of fools
who are always ready to believe
that something can be made out of
nothing. As it is the duty of the
Comptroller-General of Georgia to
keep an eye upon the insurance com
panies of the State, it may be that
any serious swindle in this latitude
will be prevented. Meantime, we
desil-eto" warn our readers against
suck concerns.

box. and t he fated names were drawn
from the box u pon command of Gen.
Winder by ex-Congressm'an Ely, who
was captured at tbe first battle of
Bull Bun and was confined with tbe
Union officers. Gen. Lee, then Col.
Lee, was one of tho “elected,’’ and
the slip of paper drawn from the box
designating him had on it only the
words “Col Lee.’’ The fate of those
selected was not then determiend,
being contingent upon the action ot
the United Slates authorities with
regard to the convicted people of
the“Lady Jeff Davis.’’ This slip of
piper with his name upon it wa>
given to Col. Lee, who indorsed
upou the back of it that it was the
hot ot he drew in the lottery of life
ami death, and pot it in a letter
written to his family, which was al
lowed to be forwarded.
On the 14th of November the offi
cers designated at hostages were re
moved to the county jail, where
they were detained about three
nion! Its under rather disagreeable
condit ions. About the middle ol
February, 1862, Confederate States
Government, having received in
form ition that tlie “Lady Jeff Davis'-
people had been remanded as prison
ers of war, the hostages were trans
ferred from the jail to tlie prison as
signed to prisoners of war, and on
the 22d of that month they were pat
on board a flag of truce boat to be
transferred to a United States steam
er in nenttal waters.
One who has long investigated this,
'subject gives tbe result, and is happy
to ear it"is found in “Women’s Best
Friend.” It is adapted especially to
that great central, ali-eontrolingorgan,
the womb, correcting its disorders,
and curing any irregularity of the
“menses” or“courses.” Dr. J. Brat'-
ffeld’s Female Begtilator acts like a
charm- in whites, and in sudden or
graduel checking, or in entire sto] page
of the “monthly courses,” from cold,
mental trouble, or like causes, by re
storing the natural discharge in every
instance. In chronic cases, so often
resulting iu ulceration, falling of the
womb, its action is prompt and decis
ive, saving the constitution from num
berless evils and premitnre decay.
