PETITION PUOU THE BARBERS.
The following petition, signed by J.
W. Howard, L. Dawson, Charles W.
Ellison, F. N. McCarthy, II. II. Wil

presented:
To the Honorable Mayor and
Council: Wc, the undersigned bar
bers of tbo city of Albany, Ga^ feel
ing the importance of keeping tho
Sabbath as a day of rest, and deairing
at the same time to be protected in our
business from competition disregard
ful of that day,do respectfully petition
your honorable body to pass an ordi
nance prohibiting the keeping open
of barber shops on the Sabbath day.
The petition uas received and the
following ordinance was offered to bo
adopted at the next meeting.
lie it ordained by the Mayor and
Council. T«al, from and after the pass
age of this ordinance, it shall not be
lawful for any barber shop to be kept
open on Sunday; nor for any barber to
follow hi* calling on Haiti day.
lie it further ordained, 'I hat any
person, or |K>r*»n*. violating this or
dinance shall be punished by confine
ment in the guard bouse for a term not
exceeding sixty days, or fined in the
som of fifty dollar* lor each and every
such offence, or both in the discretion
of ihe Mayor.
AFTER THE DRUGGISTS.
While this ordinance was being draVVti
up, a friendly sort of conversational
delilteralion Was Imd by the Mayor
And Couucil upon a preposition of Al
derman Weston to prohibit the salo of
cigars by drug "litres on Sunday. The
colloquial debate took in a wide scope,
ami embraced strictures to Ik.* thrown
around the sale of everything,
from a loaf of bread to a
pound of ice. It was cm short by
tho reading of the ordinance above a*
drawn up by Councilman Jones, of the
ordinance committee.
THE CEMETERY FENCE.
Alderman Mayo said be wanted to
•gain call the attention of the Council
to the dilapidated condition of the
fence around the cemetery.
The Mayor called alien I ion lo need
ed opening of street in soul hern por
tion of the city, adjoining die lauds of
Dr. Hilsman and Mr. J. W. Walters.
THE FIRE ENGINE MATTER.
Aldcrunn Onrtatnwsky presented a
letter from LaPrnnce Fire Engine
Company offering an engine.
Alderman June* said the matter was
already understood, and the reading of
tho proposition unnecessary.
Mr. Ed. L Wight. Mr. Jacob LorcU
and Mr. Joel Joiner presented them
selves a* a committee from the Thron-
alceskn Company to urge upon the
Couucil tho purchase of a new engine
By motion of Alderman Gortntow-
sky the _entlem«*n were received and
their Aetna rks ordered to be beard.
The three coimnittemcn than pro
ceeded to demonstrate the importance
of buying a iicw engine.
At the conclusion of their remarks
Alderman Wo*tun said the Council
appreciated the po-ition of the fire
company, and in reference to the re
marks o! Committeeman Joiner of
abuse he would suggest the appoint
ment of another committee to wait
upon the proprietor of the News and
Advertiser, and a part of the abuse
might be averted.
Committeeman Joiner said he had al
one time approached Mr. McIntosh, of
tiie News anp Advertiser, to cot reel
his opinion of the Tbronateeska, hut
tint Mr. Mcl. as good as told him he
didn’t want to hear him, and he didn’t
bother him any more.
The Mayor thought no one should he
held responsible for nbuslng the com
pany, as many men very often harshly
criticised matters about which they
knew nothing.
Alter further remarks, both frnm
Council and Committeemen, the Com
mittee returned thanks to Ihe Council
and bowed itself ouL
TIIE DRUGGISTS AGAIN.
Alderman Weston offered the fol
lowing ordinance:
licit Ordained by the Mayor and

It was moved and secondisl that
Councilman Muyo be excused for ab

of attractions unrivaled anywhere.
But the greatest attraction is yet to
bo mentioned, namely, the crowd of
elegant guests wlm fill the collages,
linger along the walks, or drive, or
trip the light fantastic. This leads us
to speak of the elegant German held
here last evening, in honor of oue of
the most charming aud popular

fair was a gem of Beauty, many
handsome toilets adorned tho ladies,
and the event was rendered brilliant

The usual number of flirtations are

Brown’s Iron Bitters
is one of the vety few tonic
medicines that aft not com
posed mostly of alcohol or
whiskey, thus becoming a
fruitful source of intemper
ance by promoting a desire
for rum.
Brown’s Iron Bitters
is guaranteed to be a non
intoxicating stimulant, and
it will, in nearly every case,
take the place of all liquor,
and at the same time abso
lutely kill the desire for
whiskey and other intoxi
cating beverages.
Rev. G.W. Rice, editor of
the American Christian Re
view, says of Brown’s Iron
