Camilla, Ga., August 17,1SS2.
—We copythi* from the editorial
of the Clarion ill reference to Mr.
Stephens: **Jfobo«ly is nfraiil of h»
being a bad Governor. lie is too
good a man for that. He is a friend
to the poor man, the colored man,
the orphan and the widow. His life
has been foil of charity and good
deeds. lie is a religious man, but
he is not rujftdng for office on his
religion, lie has not got too much
of it. If ho had too much he would
neglect ids official duties, amt be
running off to Sunday School meet
ings, and then, when office work
should go wrong, l.e would cry out
persecution for rightouucss’ sake.* 7
—Gov. Colquitt has been invited
to come to the big barbecue of the
25th. We trust he will come. He
has made a good Governor for the
past two years. The Governor is a
tine stump orator, and our people
want to bear him: but for goodness
sake, if he docs come, we hope he
will not rnn Hie persecution sched
ule. Georgia wn* gulled most
admirably two years ago. Tom
Hardeman has often been defeated,
but his speeches are not tilled with
lamentations.
-Mr Stephen- ‘ftf be the m-Nt
Governor by a Isrc- »i».j ►rity. itui
we arc curious to know rah it sort of
a vote urn* old friend and army com
mander, Gen. Garlic)!, will get.
We like (ion. Gartrell. He is an
Independent candidnte for Govern
or, so announced long ago. Hut the
Independents thought Mr. 5*:*-ph-
ens had more power to further their
ends, and recommended him. a- did
. the Republican* rrcotunu nd G<\i.
Gartrell. We have a- nuieli respect
for the ;Republican convention ns
lor the “Coalition convention.’’
Both declare their object to be “to
destroy the regular Democratic par
ty’’ of the State? The Republicans
took Gen. Gartrell on hi* platform
as do the Independents Mr. Steph
ens on bis platform. There i- more
sympathy, from some cause, be
tween Felton, Speer, McWhorter
dm Mr. Stephens than between Fel
ton, Speer, McWhorter and Gar
trell. We think all differences ought
CO be settled within Che party. So
Felton and Speer and McWhorter
and Gartrell arc wrong. Mr. Ste
phens is now right. He is back in
the regular party, after six years ab
sence. He will remain now, we
guess, till he dies, and his influence
wili bb for good. It is then best for
the people to cling to their organiza
tion and elect Mr. Stephens.
Our people cannot afford to let the
Democratic organization die, albeit
it is “boss-ruled” for the present. In
the original draft of the platform of
the recent convention was a resolu
tion looking to the future solidity of
the .party, and advising that “all
errors shonld be corrected within and
not without the parly.” It is
matter of regret that, when the res
olutions were submitted to Mr. Ste
phens, that he should havu stricken
but such a feature. But all this will be
made clear, no doubt, when Mr. Ste
phens stumps the State.
—When A. O. Bacon withdrew
his name, the Bacon men proposed
to nominate'Mr. Stephens by accla
mation. But it was the captious
Pat Walsh, of Augusta, who object
ed and forced the call of counties
This captious spirit on the part of a
leading Stephens man incensed
pointments to Valdosta for the 22«\
(Juitm.au 23d, Thoinasvrllt? 21th, and
will speak herb" atTatnilh on tlie
25th.
Let him have a row ing .crowd.
Hardeman is a noble man, and a
Democrat who refuses to run after
the new methods in politics of latter
days. The enthusiasm was intense
over his nomination. The whole par
ty ha« confidence in Hardeman. Xo
suspicions of doubtful combination
and strange company hang around
him. Xo vindications becloud him;
no strange letters hamper him; lie
is no returning prodigal; he has
never been an exile, and has never
swerved from the path of duty.
—When David Davis adjourned
tlie Senate of tho United States bis
remniks were hut few—only a few
lines: When Harry Jackson ad
journed the Democratic convention
lie delivered a long, artificial, still
address.
—The majority .rule begun with
ostracism as deep ns that which
President Arthur practices. Where
it was possible all iiuti-Sfeplieusmen
were excluded from the committees
of the convention. Such conduct a*
tliis wili split Democracy in
Georgia. Every government h.v its
own machinery; we have the
hnilnt ami employ the use of conven
tions but nstrarUm from the husi-
ne sot tbe convention wi'l not he
tolerated by a large iniuoriiy. How
true Ken Hill spoke when he said,
-Personalism*’ was the bane of
Georgia politics. A party eiidqu-
j 'or* it-viability by ostracism within
party. Thi* conduct on the
t of the friends of the ruling
potentate and hi* chosen sit
brought to our recollection the
memorable word* «►.• Talleyrand
« h> ii Cliarlo. X. had amu-eil tlie
anger of t is people: -The cannon
which tilt«l against tlie people can
not but shake tile sovereign’s
throne.”
—We read in the Constitution a
lew days since a long editorial in
praise of Mr. Henderson, the Com
missioner of Agriculture, llo lias
just been re-appointed by the Gov
ernor. When it comes to praising
the agricultural department of
Georgia Col. II. should receive his
shaics. But everybody knows that
Mr. J. S. Newman is the man of the
department, lie gives' to tlie de
partment its science, its hooks, its
learning. We favor the depart
ment, but nothing new in its plans
lias been adopted since -Dr. Janes
resigned.
The department was created in
1371—the act passing the House by
the vote of Speaker A. O. Bacon.
Gov. Smith appointed Dr. Thomas
P. Jai.cs Commissioner. Dr. Janes
made the department a great suc
cess. Ho brought to his aid J. S.
Newman and II. J. 1’oddingj who
arc still in the office. Dr. Janes had
no precedents to follow. What
accomplished was wrought by his
splcnoid executive ability. But the
Doctor had one fault for which his
scientific ability could not atone,
lie was no politician. He attempted
to run the machine free of politics.
11c even refused to allow Governor
Colquitt to control his appointments.
This produced a coolness, and this
faithful, successful, able agent of the
people wis retired ami a shrewd
politician put in his place.
—On last Friday night wc went
in to witness the rendition of the
J.ndy of Lyons by Hie Camilla ama

the success of the club. Tlie ladies
