■nab is in the lead—leading New Or
leans over 20,000 bales. New Orleans,
will of course, catchup and go away
ahead of Savannah later in the season,
but to be in the lead at this time is a
handsome feather in Savannah’s cap.
By the way, where are the 7,800,000
bales that some of the guessers are fig
uring out to come from? They say
1,800,000or2,OOO.OOOfrom Texas. But
don't they know that Texas, if she
makes so much in the field cannot save
it? Those high—very high—estimates
are designed to beat prices down until
the stock gets out of the hands of the
farmers and they, being in debt and
pressed for money, will soon let it go,
and then a reaction may be looked for,
hlghor prices prevail.

Washington Special New York Sue.
Senator Maliouo is now in his
winter quarters at tbe Portland
Flats, whero he sits in his drawing
room in solitary magnificence, ana
when ho wants to see Jay Hubbell
be sends for him and Jay Hubbell
comes. It is perfectly beautiful
to see how tbe Virginia senator runs
things his own way. He has forced
social recognition from the republi
can society of Washinton. Some
time ago his wife took a party of
friends on a tour of the departments.
When they reached the first one it
was after 2 o’clock, when the public
is rigidly excluded.
“You can’t be admitted," said the
janitor.
“Iam Mrs. Mahone,’’ responded
the lady.
The doors did not come open—
they flew open.
Ttie Electric Moor-mat.
New York Commercial Advertiser!
There is now on exhibition at the
American Institute Fair, a now in
vention called the “electne door
mat,’’ which the inventor claims
“will let you know when the late
comers enter the house,” and also
will “give away” the -approach of
burglars. While it may be of ines
timable benefit to alarm tho house
hold, the “late comers” will find it a
shocking affair, and will present a
novel spectacle to the wondering
policeman as, with hair standing up
like “quills upon the fretful porcu
pine,” they involuutariiy linger on
the doorstep.

IS STILL ON HAND AT THE FAMOUS
Tho Light Affliction Department.
Tempi, Bar.
Charles Dickens had a very good
story about the early days of a re-
nowued mourning establishment.
He went there one day about' some
mourning, and was ushered into n
room whero sat a shopman with an
- attendant in woe-stricken habili
ments, .wlm groaned out: “A fath
er, a mother, perhaps a wife.” “Oh,
no’’ snid Dickens, “only a distant re
lative.” “Oh, sir.” said the fun
ereal one, “yon have made a mis
take ; this is the chamber of agoniz
ing woe. John, toll the hell und
show the gentleman into' tho light
affliction department.”
A Help to Writer..
A Munich professor has invented
a bracelet that will remedy the af
fliction known as “writer's cramp.”
The penholder is fastened to the
bracelet in such a manner that it pan
be used to write with ease and with
out bringing the fingers into use at
all. The hand can rest on the table,
moving along as the letters are
traced, and it is said that little prac
tice is required to give expertness in
the use of the invention.
King Mtesa of Africa is a trouble
some customer to the English mis
sionaries. He Ims been converted to
Christianity and the particular creed
of the English church all rights but
he doesn’t act right for a convert.
After he had heard all the mission
aries had to say and could learn
nothing more from them, he drove
them out of his domain on the prin
ciple that they could do him no
more good, end he did not want for
eigners tempering with his people.
WOMAN.
Her Health and Lire
Depends more on the regularity of her
menstrual functions than on any or
all causes combined. An aetural or a
living death is the inevitable result
of derangement of a function which
makes woman what she is in every
respect, aiid especially in her mental
and bodily constution. Hence im
mediate relief from such derangements
is the only safeguard against wreck
and ruin. In all cases of stoppage,
delay, or other irregularities of the
•‘courses.” Dr. J. Bradtield’s Female
Regulator is the only sure remedy. It
acts by giving tone to the nervous cen
tres. improving the blood, and deter
mining direeteiy to the organs of tneu-
struetion. It is o scientific prescrip
