AtlinU Constitution.
One of the most important conven
tions held in Atlanta lately was the
convention of liquor dealers, which met
in Concordia Hall at ten o’clock yester
day. The convention was hurriedly
gotten up, but in spite of that fact, was
largely attended, there being neaiiv a
hundred delegates present. » ;
The convention was called to order
at ten o’clock, by Mr. O’Connor, of
Augusta, and a temporary organiza
tion was effected by the election of Mr.
David Mayer, of Atlanta, chairman,
Mr. Herbort, of Augusta, was elected
temporary secretary. On motion a
committee of twenty-five was appointed
on permanent organization, after which
the morning session adjourned to re
convene at half-past three. At half
past three o’clock the convention met
and received the report of the commit
tee on permanent organization, which
report suggested the election of the fol
lowing -permanent officers: President,
James H. Campbell, of Macon; Vice-
Presidents, S. L. Singer, of Savannah,
E. J. O’Cqnnor, of Augusta, 1. Joseph,
of Columbus, L Lowe, of Athens,.and
M. M. Pepper, of Rome; correspond
ing secretary, VF. R. Cox, of Macon;
recording secretary, G. Herbort, of
Augusta; Treasurer, B. M. Bose. The
report of the committee was accepted,
and the proposed officers were duly
elected. The following committee was
appointed to draft a set of by-laws:
G. Herbort, chairman; B. C- Johnson,
Mr. Caruthers, of Athens, S. B. Wright
and W. E. Haygood. The following
committee on resolutions was appoint
ed: S. L. Singer, chairman; M. T.
Quinan, E. O’Connor, F. M; Potts and
E. S. O’Brien.
There being no further business, the
convention adjourned to meet at 10
o’clock to-day, at which time the re
ports of the two special committees will
be received. If the reports of the com
mittees are accepted without much
labor before 2 o’clock, at which time
the delegates, by invitation, will pro
ceed In a body to the city brewery,
and be entertained as guests of the City
Brewing Company. At five o’clock
they will return to the city and be
royally entertained with a banquet at
Concordia hall, tendered by the
Liquor Dealers’ Assieiation of Atlan
ta. The delegates are a representa
tive body of men, being the lead
ing liquor dealers of tbo cities and
towns from which they come. They
are dispatching business in a wav
which shows that they vre thorough
ly in earnest, and it is probable that
their next convention will number
several hundred delegates. They al
ready have several local associations.

About nine o’clock yesterday
morning the attention ot keeper
Weiners, at the Zoological gardens,
was called to a great commotion in
the lion ? s cage. “I knew what was the
matteiV'said Mr. Weiners. M I went
10 tbe lion’s cage and there lay the
lioness licking a pretty little cub
about a minute old. She was as
Droud as oniy such animals can be,
b it as savage as a meat axe. The
old lion 6at back on his haunches in
one corner looking very much inter
ested, hut he knew better than to
venture to offer bis congratulations.
She would have scratched hia eyes
out. Lions, tigers and all these flesh
eatere are curious about that. The
mother of cubs will not let her lord
•ear her or the young for weeks after
their birth, for the reason, I suppose,
that he may eat them. They are apt
to do it, especially in captivity. After
a good deal of trouble this morning
I got the lion and lioness separated,
and put her with her cub in the ad-
joitiiug cage. She went in the latter
place at once and was in there
couple of hours, and I think, from
the variety of noises this afternoon,
there is more tlmn one cob now.
There certainly seemed io be, for the
cries that came therefrom sounded
like six cen dozen cats on a roof.
Yesterday afternoon the lioness
appeared in her outer cage* and
-eemed the picture of contentment
l^lie old lion, In his cage adjoining,
watched for her growl and her step
and seemed all curiosity aud anxiety.
But when feeding time came he
ribbed his fourteen pounds of meat
Sod busied himself with it, appar
ently to the exclusion of all other
thoughts. When the lioness got her
meat she carried it at once to the
dark cage where her cobs lay.

The municipal election has started
nut to be very noi-y. We have no
side to lake in the controversy, but
mildly suggest that no negro or white
man, for that matter, has any right to
fill his -hitic with mean liquor and
take the' streets shouting aloud the
name of the candidate to whom he is
obligated. It is disorderly, and we
ealj-upon our police to stop it.
' Speaking of tf»e death of Mr. Cut

number of the News and Advertiser,
ihe Quitroun Free Press has this to
say: Mr. . Cutler had often visited
Brooks county and had many friends
here, lie was a gentleman of the old
school-—can wo say more? The writ-

and takes this method to express bis
high regard for the deceased, and to
tender his sympathies to surviving
friends, both here and in Maine.
. Quite a cal v a cade of emigrants to
Florida passed'through the city last
week. They had a great quantity
of dogs, which seemed to lie a com
modity with them. There were hound
dogs hull dogs and fystc-dogs, and of
-.course the collection caught the atten

it is to depart therefrom.

charged with the seduction of his sis-

too filthy for us to relate, and de

sympathise with the father of the vic

The yon’ng people of this city have
fallen into a habit which we sincere
ly hope they will get oot of, as it is
neither very sensible or pleas
ant to the majority -of persons.
We allude to the fact that it is a
rare occurrence for guests to assemble
at entertainments before half-past
eight or nine o’clock. At this season
of the year it is night at half-past five,
and it is the worse sort of folly to
wait three hoars after sapper time
before going to places of amusement
or parties. Go early and leaVe early,
and it will give more satisfaction to
hosts and to all concerned. It is a
mistaken idea that it is “the thing” to
go oot late. Quit it.

Sheffield A Bell.
About the busiest place in town is
the hardware establishment on Broad
street of Messrs. Sheffield & Beil. Hot
many people who come to trade in the
city fail to call on this substantial
firm for what they want in the line
dealt The stock is large and bought
in quantities enabling the house to
mark every item very low down.
This is an advantage over competition
that makes itself felt, and the farmers,
like eveiybody else, will go for their
supplies where it takes the losst
amount of money to procure them.
An ally of the house is Mr. Linton

—Everything is quiet at court this
week. Judge Bower presides with
ease and dignity, and gives satisfac
tion to theTi.tr and people. Judge
Bower is not only a man of culture,
but is strongly .endowed with tho
necessary requisite called common
sense. In the dispalh of business he
makes haste slowly, and everything
in his court moves along, in a qniet,
business like way.
The business of Mitchell court has
been hindered vastly from various
causes, and a two weeks session may
be held. Hon. W. X. Spence, mem
her of the Legislature, is attending
coart. His business is such that he
was obliged to be absent from the
Legislature, though a member of
several very important committees.
He is Cliairnian-of the Committee on
county and county lines, occnpies the
second place on the special judiciary
committee, is a member of the com
mittee on local and special legislation,
aud a member of the committee to
redistrict the State. We have no
doubt he will discharge his duties to
the satisfaction of his constituency
and with credit to himself. The re-
districting the State into ten Con
gressional districts is an important
■matter. The Second district is one
where the "previous condition” pre
ponderates, and we do not want the
smaller Democratic counties taken
away and leave us at tbe mercy of
tbe Republicans. We arc glad Mr.
Spence and Chariie Pendleton are
on that committee. Both men un
derstand the situation.
—Judge Vason is attending court
this week. He seldom gets here,
going usually to Terrell. The Judge
is eminently sccfal, is a fine talker,
and is always cordially welcomed by
the people of Mitchell.
—The defeated candidates for
the Judgeship seem as jolly as it
elected. Col. A. L. Hawes has ab
solutely gained -flesh. Xor would
one ever know that Capt. O. G. Gor-
ley wss beaten for the Senatorsbip.
Perhaps lawyers have the art of con
cealing.. .i But.the Captain is as jolly
as ever. Captain “O. G.” is very
fond of perpetrating a joke on his
friends and associates, but during the
recent canvass got caught himself.
It is very important these days, it
seems, in a race out of the regular
order to be known as an old line
Whig—a fictitious sort of entity with
a name bnt so local habitation. Tbe
Captain had posted the colored ora
tor, Uncle Dick, as to his political
faith. The colored brethren met.
Uncle Dick plead the cause of the
old line Whig. Says he: ‘.‘Breth
ren, I appeal to von to rally to Capt.
Gurley. He has stood by the color
ed folks. He helps us when iu
trouble. You all know whar he
stands ill politics. I do not ask you
to vote for him because be is a Dem

—The Superior Conrt, when run
by the best Judges, is at leasts cost
ly luxury. Tlih attendance required
is so vast The cases brought do not
involve much money, as a general
rule. -
If this county bad’ a County Court
tinder a judicious arrangement, the
court self-sustaining, much of this
small business could be disposed of
with less cost and much more con
venience. The great poverty of our
people calls for less expensive courts.
—People yet talk rebellious about
the Senatorial contest. They speak
of it as “Colquitt crow.” Bill Arp
says the philosopher is not so philo
sophic himself over the Senatorial
contest. Says he: "It is an honor to
be called to office by the voice of the
people when they rail with one ac
cord, or With something like unani
mity, but when it provokes the
hatred and bitterness of a respectable
minority, it doesn’t pay.”
—The Atlanta Mail says: “Hon.
H. M. McIntosh is popular with the
members of the House, and, by his
manly hearing and pleasant address,
is making many friends.”
—That popular house, Cochran,
Haile & Co., is selling now at New
York cost, with cult- O n per cent,
added. Cotton is low and they have
put down prices with the fall in cot
ton. This is a good chance for the
buyer. They have plenty of goods,
and are making. r>pid and heavy
salcs. Ed. Haile always has an ct e
to the times.
—John Pearce’ has a dress coal
that he uses only cm ttate occasions
He put it on in honor of Judge
Bower being elected, and, when lie
walked into conrt aud took his old
seat as rlerk, he looked as conscious
as one c,r Ihe siaff editors of the At
lanta Constitution.
—C. O. had a big run of luck at
Court and made more money than
anybody, ile is a great favorite
with the women, end has charge of
almost alt the divorce cases.
—He who attends our Superior
Courts will find we are not "dwell-
eis in Arcadia,” bnt live in a sinful
section of the earth. Bnt. when we
wish a man fit to represent us in the
United States Senate, can not we
hope to find one above Ihe common
