ceeding election. This cost, the last
year, iu direct expenses, $5,108,300
out of the public treasury. If the
whole system, with its officials, spies,
informers, inspectors and police
ageuts, couhl be abolished, no harm
would come to a single legitimate in
terest throughout the country, and a
"heavy hand would be lifted from
the homes of a free people. With
this out of the way, at the opening of
a new Congress, the tariff might be
taken up without serious opposition,
and modified so as 'to be acceptable
to the whole country.
