“The system of chattel mortgages
as it now prevail* mid is 'practiced,
is beginning lo be one of iTTlendur-
aide hardship lo ihe burner. The
idea seems to prevail that it is a
benefit to tlic poor man; this is a
groat mis'nkc, and if he will reflect
one moment hu will see. if he 1
not alresil^* realized, that It la
cuise-hriuging ruin and desolation
In tho end to him who follows it up
for any length of time. In this sec
tion, 1 do noi think I would exag
gerate, if I were lo estimate that at
least three-fifths of the farmers de
pend upon advances tinder chattel
mortgages lo run their farms. These,
in the first place, liavo to pay an ad
vance price on their supplies* in con
sideration of the time extended.
This usually from ten lo twenty per
cent. Then they pay iuterest on the
note from dale till mnturity. If not
paid at maturity the morlgagi
seizes tho properly, thus entailing
heavy expeuses and court cost, to be
added to tho mortgage debt, token
altogether, the difference between
cash ami time prices for his supplies
would aggregate from twcnly-fivc
to thirty per cent additional. What
business can stand it? The chattel
mortgage system is Ihe shortest
road to financial ruin ever inveuted
by Ilie ingenuity of man. Let it be
repealed. And with the chattel
mortgages let the only remaining
obstacle to the poor man’s crcdli
also be removed—the homestead.
What good docs the homestead do
a rich man? He can get credit be
cause lie lias an exccrs. The poor
man cannot because he rarely owns
more thuu the amount exempted,
nnd must needs mortgage his borne,
or go without credit. Remove the
barrier, and tho door to credit I*
open to tlic poor as well as the rich.’-*
“In Texas the samo evil is being
discussed by the press. Many fann
er*, says the Austin Argus, all over
this country, and especially of ihe
Soul hem Slate*, are compelled to
borrow money year after year, or
lather mortgage their crops in nil-
vanrc for supplies. In many in
stance* they will get supplies until
they not only mortgage their prop
erty, hut pledge themselves to plant
a certain quantity of cotton so that—
cotton being considered cash stall

in Iris loan. Of course the most ex
orbitant |>er rentage is charged on
such supplies—enough to keep the
unfortunate planter in chronic |

_ I’olomac,
he rowed over in a boat to a place
where he met his death and where
Harold was captured.
Mudd was at once arrested, and
was defended by Robert J. Brent, of
Baltimore. Polk Gardner test Hied to
seeing two horsemen riding very
fast on the road between Washing
ton and Byronstowu on the night of
April 14. Ho and a party wore out
f rsuit of the assassins, and on
ways lo Surralsvillo they came
to Dr. 31udd’s house. In reply to
their inquiries lie told them that on
Saturday morning, April 15, at day
break, two strangers arrived at his
place, one of them came to the door
wliito the other sat on his horse,
lie went down stairs and opened
ihe door aud bo'h came in. One of
them had a broken leg, which he set.
He did not known who the man was,
and both left in a short lime. This
conversation between Dr. Mudd and
Polk look place on Tuesday, April
18, and Dr. Mudd said that ho* had
heard of ihe President’s assassinstion
at church on Suday. He told Polk
dial the older of the two men
shaved his mustache and whiskers oil
and left ilie house ou ertrichet, Ihe
other leading bis crippled corai
ion’s horse. Polk further test!
that on April 21 he again went to
Dr. Mudtl’s bouse, and (his time for
the purpose of meeting him.
When Dr. Mudd found that iliey
were going to search the house he
whispered to his wife, and she went
up stairs and brought down a caval
ry bool, slit down the leg, on the in
side of which was written in ink,
“J. Wilkes.” Although at (hat time
Dr. Mudd still asserted that boSh
men were strangers to him, later in
ihe day he acknowledged that one of
them was Boolh. Dr. Mudd was
sentenced by the court lobe confined
for life at hard labor, and President
Johnson ordered him and others lo
be sent to ilie Albany Penitentiary.
Dr. Mudd was subsequently, how
ever, sent lo the Dry Torlugas,
where, during a yellow fever epi
demic, lie rendered such valuable
services that af-er a few years’ con-
lincmcat he was pardoned. About
a year or two ago he brought a
claim for those services before Con
gross, but it was not allowed.
Bar vm. Fodder.
Iowa Sl*t« Kejlslrr.
It is evident that as our country
becomes more densely populated
and larger numbers of stoca are
wanted per actc, there will be a rad
ical chango in the rough feed for
winter use for cattle. We may ex
pect and talk about three tons of
tame hay per acre, but the average «maOa Bettor.
does not exceed one and a-half tons.
Atcxpcrlmentsattbe Nebraska Agri
cultural College it was found that
the weight of green com fodder per
average acre was twenty tons.
When carefully dried out there were
from six to eight tons of choice and
nut*icious fodder for cattle, besides
a good crop of sound com. The
fodder and corn combined were
worth five acres of the best hay. It
may be contended that this plan
would be more profitable now in
lime of scarce and dear labor. Have
ample blue grass pastures for late
reeding, and then com fodder for
the winter. This probably requires
a li-tie more labor in feeding than
bay or com. But labor and care are
among (he main elements of success.
Wo are among those who believe
there should be inorn profitable em
ployment on the farm in tho winter,
elriicr for hired bands or the pro
prietor.- There would bo less gad
ding to town, imbibing bad habits,
neglecting family, farm and stock.
There arc thousands ol farmers all
about us poor, nnd who ought to be.
if it were not for the suffering anil
oils of wife and children.
But tlic subject of using move or
the com fodder, which now goes to
waste, anil less hay, Is worthy of se
rious cnnsUeratioii. Much less
sized farm 4 Vould probably -carry
larger herds of cattle, as it is evident
one acre of corn wilt supply a9 much
as (wo acres of hay, besides it will
not in the least lessen the crop of
corn. In some cold and stormy
winters corn fodder has some ob
jections, owing to the trouble of
handling it in the wind and deep
snows. Care and prudent fore
thought can overcome in a measure
hi* iHfilculiy. It has a rare winter
which lias no pleasant days scat
tered all through it. At such time*
the fodder could bo placed ready
lor worse weather.
