--Speaking of the female minstrels,
known as the Itentz-Stanly combina
tion, and tltelr performance in *3Iacon,
tlie Evening Graphic says: The female
minstrels were no doubt expecting a
large house last evening, and their ex-
licctations were fully realized. If a
stranger had conic nround casually
while the curtain was down, the first
thought would have lieeit that lie had
struck a |»ofilical mass meet ing, and

midst any strong minded females their
strong-mindedness doesn’t incline to
wards the ]mtronizing of those enter
tainments that custom lias reserved ex
clusively for ihe tyrauleal “lords of
creation.” And the number of the
privileged that were out last evening
was marvelous. One would hardly
suppose there were so many nten and
boys in 3Iacon. The entertainment had
nothing very striking about it one way
or another,and for thegratuitons adver
tising given the company by the highly
moral portion of every community
they would not do half the business
tiny arc now doing. Tlie bill present
ed is only a first rate variety bill, neith
er better nor worse, from a moral point
of view, than many oilier variety va

—The Jlccorder uf Sunday last
gives the particulars of a murder
committed in Savannah last Friday
night upon one Robert Haywood by
John McCoy. The two men were
near neighbors living on Bay lane,
and had not been on good terms for
some time. Ou Friday night Hay
wood went into McCoy’s house and
asked him about some shoes, which
the visitor claimed had been taken
by McCoy. The latter claimed that
he did not take any, but was chal
lenged by Haywood to come out in
Uic lane nml he would tell him al
about it. They went out and a quar
rel arose, in the progress of which
3IcC’o>* plunged a sheath knife in
Haywood's neck severing the jugular
vein The assailant then ran away,
and ; Hay wood, staggering into his
house, stated to witnesses that
had been stabbed by 3IeCoy. A
uieaMMigcr was dispatched to police
headquarters with Ihe tidings, and
Lieut. .Sln-Ifall at once started for the

assailant and sent for Dr. Bullock,
County I'hysleiun, who said that the
wounded man was beyond any pos

that it is more than $290,000. It is

M'olfle, supposed to be for dealings
in cotton, have been traced up, and
Vincent dealt also, it is supposed,
with other cotton houses.
The Iegi*lalivo committee has now
counted the money in the Treasusy
vault aud found $120,000. The de
ficit is $227,000 and i* amply secured
by good iHinil-uieit. It is developed
that the money was taken in the last
two vents, and nearly all before Nov
ember last. Vincent, according to
the statement by a witness made be
fore the committee, lost over $100,-
000 iu cotton through one house,
Fred Wolfle’s, and some through
others. It is surmised that he may
have loaned some, although no evi
dence to that cflcct has been shown.
There has beeu some talk since he
bought a new house, rich furniture

default will not interfere with the
State’s business in the least, nor
cause any interruption in the regular

On Friday evening laid about sun
set, a squad of seven convicts under
guard of Mr. Need l'owcll, of this
city, employed for this purpose by
Mcssrs.Russcll Si Bryant, left off
work more than n mile from camps
nml started for tlicir quarters. Af
ter going sonic distance the guard
discovered some dogs after a flock
of sheep aud endeavored by halloa
ing to stop (hem. This necessarily
drew his attention front the convicts
for a moment, when the nearest, a
while man named Carter who is
‘crving a six mouths’ sentence for
currying concealed weapons, sprang
at him like a avalanche, and before
Ihe guard could bring Ids rifle—a
sixteen shooter—to bear the convict
had 1dm fast, his arms pinioned to
his sides. Realizing his perilous
position and situation young Powell
cast the gun from him with all his
might, calling upon a colored c
vict, a kind of Wifotv, in whom he
had confidence, lo take it an protect
their lives. Another convict, Bill
Wright by name, however,
sccitrcii the gun first, nnd cocking it
made an attempt as if to shoot but
the Trusty rushed on bint with his
axe and threatened to brain hint if
he fired at the guard. At this junc
ture Wright fled, carrying the gun
with him and leaving the six other
convicts and the guard to take
care of themselves. During this side
passage between Wright and the
Trusty. Carter and the Guard were
clasped in a deadly embrace, each
doittg all in Ids power to kill or dis
able the other. Powell had a small
seven-shot Smith & We-sou pistol,
and was using it to the best advant
age—intimidating the negroes by
pointing it at them and threatening,
and by tiring on his antagonist, Cai-
ter. Carter, however, continued to
light until Ids right hand was dis
abled by a pistol ball through it,
when he surrendered and plead for
mercy. This closed up the melee,
when an armsticc was declared lo
lake stork, ascertain casualties and
repair damages. In Carter’s skin
were found four bullet holes—one io
tlie right hand, one in the fleshy part
of the right arm, one in tha left side
and another in the chin: three con
victs—BUI Wright, George Emanuel
and Dan Bert, all colored, were ab
sent without leave (and absent lo
slay il they can) and three more of
the worst scared negroes ever seen.
During thc.fuisladc with CartcrPow-
cll, the guard, had made jumping-
jacks of the the three not leaving and
awed them into quiet submission by
simply tiring on the white man and
pointing at them. Every shot tired
had takcu effect, nml with the three
remaining cartridges Powell marched
the four remaining convicts to camps
iu close order.

Cancer and Alluvial Sail.
LoodonTrnlb.
I spoke n short time ago about 31.
Charles Blanc having died of cancer,
and pointed to the conclusion that
Ids mHlndy was to be in some degree
traced to the alluvial situation of the
Palais Mnzarin, where he resided.
Of that dcseasc, ! said that it haunts
low-lying river sides and the mouths
of streams which serve as sewers.
Perhaps it might be of interest to
sonic of your renders to know on
whntdaia I have to go. Baspaii
first called my attention to the fact
seventeen or eighteen years ago. He
was, in Holland, struck with preval
ence of cancer in the low-lying dis
tricts, and still more alon*; the
mouths of thu Scheldt nnd the Rhine,
fie at first ascribed the frequency of
the malady lo the electrical condi
tions produced by the mctnlic plates
which the women of the different
Netherlandish localities wear on
•hcir.hends to support their (all lace
and tuttzliu caps: bnt h« also found
that in the tidal region of the Seine,
where the soil is alluvial, there was
a great deal of cancer, although no
metal entered into the head-gear,
ilu pursued his ob-crvatioiis at the
mouths of other rivers. They led
hint to betieve that conditions of soil
and atmosphere whsch developed
scrofula were also favorable to ran
ecr, a malady which Is apt to first
show itself in a glandular region.
Trosscnu used lo advise patients in
whom he discerned a cancerous ten
dency not to sefatre tla maitcis samj
by fretting, and to try aud live where
the soil is dry, the air lirDk, and
the aspect sunny. I have known
of a good round number of deaths
front cancer iu those quarters of the
city where there are underground
water courses, and along the Seine.
Count von Gollz, the Prussian Am
bassador for many years at thu Court
of the Tuilerics, lived close to the
river. When Madame Louis Blanc
wus attacked with the cancerous
malady of which she died she bad
been for some lime residing in the
part of the Rue de Rivoli nearest
the Seine.
Many years ago, in making an ex
cursion down the Shannon, I was ap

women, who stretched on*, their hands
