cording to Northern opinion, a pow
erful - slaveocracy’ in the fairest por
tion of the Union, filled New England
with factories which alone sustain
her present industrial character, and
lias done more to distinguish Ameri
can agriculture abroad than all other
American productions combined.
Truck farming will write a similar
history in- a less extended sphere,
' though not leps important in results
to the welfare of the nation. It will
go on increasing every year without
regard to murmurs and disparage
ments, for the same reason that cot-
.an does, to wit: the world demands
it, and nobody can say just how
much is wanted. This greatconntry
of ours, stretching through many de
grees of latitude and longitude, is ac
quiring an enormous population with
yearly accelerated speed,and this pop
ulation must, not only he fed, but
must have cheap food, which truck
is destined to furnish in large pro
portion. Beside, it must not come in
one season, but in all seasons. No
he d other country in the world is so
ritist blessed with this capability, and
nnm hence no otbcrconntry can sustain the
population the States of the Union
Thk will inlhe future. Its varying cli-
lamd malic degrees of latitude, under the
Vil progress of American industry, re-
1 ciprocally sustain each other. When
lie so the North is out of season the pro-
ided ductions of the South arc poured
tan 0 into her lap in overwhelming abun-
. dance, and when the South is out of
1 season the North returns thccompli-
Ht incut with an interest wo scarcely
daco have room to receive. A few years
ago (his was impracticable except to
groee a VG -y limited extent, but the vast
the w extension of our railroad systems
test - lias revolutionized the industries of
bad l the whole country. To them must
be accorded the honor of providing
W1 the “wavs and means’’ for building
them up the waste places and, performing
, that mighty commissary service
A necessary for the daily sustenance of
d»te( ollr advancing host of 51,000,000.
hadt And they have only fairly entered
ofyt upon the great work. In less thin
, j twenty years from to-day the present
** existing lines of railway, numerous
the !ts they arc, will he found wholly in-
the I adequate to the service that will be
Unit demanded of them. It is probably
this growing conviction that induces
M individuals and companies, even now,
Stat to strain their credit and resources
Wa * ° construct lines that neither present
. population nor trade seems to tvar-
eral rant. But experience proves that
to tl railroads bring population, and uav-
ceiv ing rendered truck farming practica-
j, rol hie in the South, they will foster it
for their own interest as well as for
P® 11 that of the public, by such reductions
j of freight charges as well as oncottr-

cia time provide fair compensation for
® ei handling the truck. Cheaper and
A. cheaper will the productions of the
lun truck farm grow,as the lands are made

2^ declared a fpw years ago that they
never could produce cotton for less
thl than ten cents per, pound,^but they do,
Et and will produce it, perhaps, for less
ru than tjjx cents per pound. It is now
q ( thought by many growers that rice
cannot be produced in this country
■“ below the present price, which are
Li considered low, ami yet the rice area
is is extending, like truck farming, far
into the interior of the Southern
States, threatening iu the near future
rt to be infinitely more abundant at re

Mr Own Hauling—I hope you
wHl accept this little tokeu ot esteem,
with my love. Oh, Mary, bow I
wish that no other hand but mime
could handle them after you pull
them oa. But I know this wish is
vain. A thousand fellows may touch
them ; yes, even squeeze them when
I am not at your side. They are
white now darling, aud soft, but no
whiter aud softer than the skin they
will soon cover. I know this be
cause I have felt—but why refer to
this? I nevei made many presents
and T hardly know what to say, but
I hope you will wear these, and every
time you go to a party with me will
wear your dress short above them,
so that you may pull them way up
and show how they fit. And on the
street everybody will see them and
admire their fit, and I know all the
boys will try to get hold of them,
because I am sure they will fit so
snug and nice. You may think that
if thq^pgprrinkle they are too big, but
that ain’t the way, because lots of
girls wear them loose and slipped
down. You know Bernhardt wore
hers that way, but she was awful
skinny. And, Mary, the girl says
if they get soiled you can get them
colored. So if the boys keep getting
hold of them and soiling them you
can have them dved black and then
they will be a nice contrast to the
skin above. I hope they are not too
small. Blow iu them before you
pull them on.
1 send this present to my love.

The young girl was completely
overcome and murmured, “Ob, the
dear, good fellow. And just to think,
he can write such pretty poetry, too.
Now I’ll open it; bless his dear soul.*
And she opened the green box and
out fell a pair of white yarn stock
ings.
She yelled and fell back in a faint
and the whole family rushed in and
saw the note. And this is why when
the young man went up that evening,
her father shot at him with an old
horse pistol and her brother and a
big bull dog chased him two squares.
The way of it was this: Just after
he bought the gloves an old Dutch
woman came In and bought the
stockings of another clerk and saw
the green boxes where the glove girl
had been selecting one. She asked
the clerk if she could have one, say
ing, ‘Til ytist poot dot stockings in,
unt wen I got homo I’ll give de box
by mine leetle gal.” The clerk told
her to help herself, and tied it up for
her, and it was when she was looking
carefully to see that her change was
all right that she laid it down by the
other and then picked up the wrong
one. Accidents will happen to the
best regulated boxes, but ail the same

a great wad of mortification and de
spair pressing erstwhile a fond and
loving heart. He stays alive simply
because he knows his family can’t

ENVIOUS EUROPEANS.
A Social War to bo made Upon Our
American Girt* Abroad.
A London dispatch to the New
York tSun says that according to one
of the London society journals, which
has Mr. Laboucliere for its conductor
a serious question has arisen atTrou-
villc among the members of thchaute
voice as to whether American girls
should not henceforth be excluded
from the best society there unless
there should happen to be special
personal rea°ons for adnuiting them.
The feeling against them is said to be
tierce, and it was finally decided that
they should not receive invitations
unless recommended by two ladies of
undoubted rank. The recommenda
tion of a gentleman, even if he were
the Prince of Wales, would be held
to be of no value. This may prjve
exasperating to those American fam
ilies who are without number at
Trotivillc and everywhere in the vi
cinity this year. Mr. Labonchcn*
says that the decision was due to
envy, ami to the fact that the Ameri
can girls have wholly distanced their
more mature European rivals, lie
adds that there will shortly be a wa
tering place into the higher .social
circles of which the grandest names
of Europe will only be admitted upon
the recommendation of at least two
American Iadici of undoubted dis
tinction.

“To keep out the cold.’’
“I’m none to cold.’’
“But it lets the dust in.”
“I have no objections to dnsf.’’
Nothing farther was said, but the
Georgian presently opened the stove
door and took out a pint of ashes
and wrapped :heai up, and at the

and took the oue ahead. Ten minutes
after starting up the train entered
a deep cut, aud the fat man was ob
