A New Order of Things,
Every intelligent planter knows tliat
within the past few years a new era
opened for the South, in the rapid and
profitable development of its agricultural
anti manufacturing resources. Its indus
tries have been multiplied and their vol

nfew demand for motive power has
sprung up, especially in such branches
of production as require light power to
take the place of the slow, inadequate
system of horse and mule power which
has prevailed for so many years.

TIFT & IRVIN,
The following curious tradition
exists among the Welsh: In 1170
two brothers, David and Mndoc,
quarreled for the throne. The young
er, Madoc, becoming disgusted, gave
up the struggle, and, fitting out a
ship, sailed West. The next year
he returned, said he had discovered
a fruitful country, and called upon
his friends to follow him. Ho^bsd
no difficulty in filling (cn ships with
moil, women and children. They
sailed away, and, according to the
Welsh story, were never heard of
again. ’
This would not be worth much as
history were it not that it seems con
firmed by evidence found upon this
side of the ocean.
In 1070, 500 years after Prince
Mndoc left Wales, a Welsh minister
named Morgan, was sent from New
York lo North Carolina to preacli
to some Welsh pcop'e who settled
there.
One day he wandered too far be
yond the outskirts, of Ihc settlement
and was caplured by the Indians.
They look him many miles inland
and prepared to hnrn him at tho
stake. The fagots were piled
around him and his doom seemed
sealed. Suddenly lie exclaimed
in Welsh : “Have I come so far to
die like a dog at last!’’ To his
surprise the Indian chief sprung
forward, loosed his bonds and
embraced him, crying in Welsh,
•No; not it you speak that language.”
Henceforth he was the honored
guest of t lie tribe.
Morgan’s surprise deepened when
the principal members p{ the Indian
tribe gathered around him and be
gan lo converse with him in Welsh,
lie preached to them, and they tin-
destood him. But what amazed him
most was to discover they had a
manuscript copy of the Bible in tlie
Welsh language.
Morgan relates this story in a
letter sent to friends in Wales.
This letter is well authenticated, but
it is the only evidence we have in
the matter. So far as we are aware,
nothing more was heard of this In
dian tribe who spoke Welsh and ha* 1

Mr. Jones was writing a letter;
writing is not hiR strong point, neith

Jones, who was sewing in the room
to help him out.
‘•Maria,’’ he said, suspending his

“Of course, there is,’’ answered
Mrs. J., swallowing a button she

‘‘Thanks! That’s the way I always
spell it, come lo think of it,” said
Jones suddenly, and there was a
spell of silence. Then ho suddenly
asked:
“Arc there two g’s in sugar,
Mari*?”
“Mercy. No!” s»id Mrs. Jones,
sharply. "I should think you could
sped a little word like that. Jeptha—
s-h-u-g a-r, sugar!”
“That’s so,” assented Jones, “but I
forget the ’ll,’ thought the word did
not look right,” and lie scratched in
the missing aspirate.
Then he folded Ui« letter and set
about directing it.
“How many n s in Cincinnati?” he
asked, balancing a potage stamp on
his tongue.
“About a dozen.” snapped Mrs. J.,
who itad just discovered that holli

pairing. “S-i-n-ii-c-i-n-n-at-t-i—

•“I don’t need one when you’re

wink at ike ceiling.
“1 used lo be a pretty good spel
ler,” said Mrs.Jones, complacently,!
“put I am liable to make mistakes
like other people. It comes natural
for some folks to spell, and I suppose ; __
I’m one of them.’’ antf she proceeded j
to cut out two square ornaments for ■
