An Insane Woinan-i Horrible Crime.
'Flic most horrible rtury on record
comes from Nevada, Mexico, toiUi
effect:
“Advices just received from Nava-
da, Mexico, report the occurrence
there ofa tragedy, the details of which
are horrible almost beyond belief.
About two years ago dames Atwater
settled near Navada and began cattle
raising. Six months after his arrival
he sent for his wife and family of
three, who were then living near
Xenia, Ohio. They tame and lived
with their father. Mrs. Atwater tvas
a woman of fine appearance and some
education, and a short experience of
frontier life disgusted her. Her
husband endeavoreii to reconcile her,
blit apparently without success.
About two months ago while walk
ing about the ranch Mrs. Atwater
was prostrated by sunstroke, and, al
though she soon recovered, her mind
has since oeeu affected.

fast growing bald. On u^ing Ayer’s Uaiu

commenced, and in about a month my head

needs but a trial to convince the most skepti

quests of his wife. Finally, angered
at his apparent indifference, Mrs.
Atwater jumped up from the table
and, going to the cupboard, took
from it a hitman arm, and throwing
it on the table, shouted to the horri
fied husband: “You don’t relish
eating your own flesh and blood
cooked, try Straw!” Mr. Atwater,
who is afflicted with heart disease,
fell to the floor in a swoon, anil his
wife was seized by two of the herd
ers just as she was about to cut Iter
throat with a caseknife. She raved
wildly, and tlie herders gathered from
her talk that tbe missing boy had been
secreted by Iter during Thursday,
anil that she had slipped from her
bed that night and murdered him, cut
ting off his head, arms and legs with
a hatchet. Two of the legs and one
arm Bhe boiled and set before her
husband as above slated. The hor
rible story was corroborated by the
herders, who found the remnants of
the child's body in the place where
the mother said she had left them.
When Mr. Atwater recovered con
sciousness his reason had departed,
and ho is now a raving maniac. Mrs.
Atwater has been placed in jail, but
there is no likelihood that she will
be tried, as she is too mad.

How Freight Rates are Cut.
Chicago Herald.
Freight rales ate being cut, and,
what is more, in such a clever man
ner Hint detection is impossible.
Many and ingenious arc the schemes
which are resorted to. Grain to the
East via the roads, forming the East-
bound pool is the hardest, and at the
same time the most inviting freight,
on which to apply the knife. So
closely is this watched, however, that
very little has been done in this
hranrh of the business, and when it
is done it can only be accomplished
by the connivance of the highest offi
cials of the road. A rebate is paid to
some large shipping firm, but in
order to prevent this from being dis
covered by joint Agent Moore the
rebate must be disguised tinder some
such entry as “damage to freight”
A conversation which took place
yesterday iu the office of a certain
railroad might tend to disclose the
maanner in which the pool agree
ment is violated on freight other than
grain.
“1 want to ship a large quantity of
huttcrine to New York, and from,
there to Glascow, Scotland,’’said the'
shipper, “but 1 don’t want to pay
butter rale for it. “Now, can’t I bill
it as grease?
“Well,” remarked the railway man,
meditating a moment, “if it is butter-
ino it is classed ns third-class matter
along with butter, hut it isn’t butter,
you say—only grease. It isn’t any
thing that you or I would eat, is it?”
The shipper, rather puzzled, an
swered that he guessed it was not,
although it was intended for consump
tion in Scotland.
“But suppose 1 should bring it to
you and simply bill it as grease? - ’ he
asked.
“Well, it is grease,' is it not? We
are not supposed to know what it is
after it reaches New York. We have
nothing to do with how it is hilled
to Scotland.”
The shipper a-kod no more ques
tions, and the. chances are that the
bulterine is now on ils way to New
Yolk, billet! as grease, and being
transported as seventh-class matter.
The diflV-renre hetwcNi third-class
ami seventh-class matter is forty
cents per l‘J0 pounds.

“Darn the hang/’ says some of our
spiritual instructors, or at loast that
is the sentiment, as nearly as it would
be palite for me to put it into prim,
But the hang won’t be darned. The
swivi old gallant, William li. Trav
ers, sat with me on a hotel veranda
and helped me admire a girl in a
Jersey waLt and bang. He , is the
jolliest stutterbr that ever talked.
**P-p-p positively b-b-bewilchiiig,
isn’t she. Miss Clara?’’ said he.
“She is indeed,” I assented.
Then he declared she reminded
him of a recent, trial in which he was
juror. A man had met a girl in a
lonely place and forcibly kissed her.
.She was terribly indignant and had
him arrested. She gave an account on
the witness stand of how he gazed
ai her iolentlv, ami ihen suddenly
throwing his arm a around her im
printed a kiss upon her lips. The
prisoner made no defense and the
jury was expected to prompth* con
vict him of assault. They returned
to 1 he court ro >m. if r. Travers was
the torenfau.
