Pine Trees Dylnz From the Effect ■
of the Drontli.
A News and Advertiser man met
Col. Reuben Jones, of Baker couuty,
on tint street one day last week, and.
asked him for the nows from his baili
wick.
“Well, air,” said the Colonel, “I can
give you an item that beats anything
you have published yet about tlie
drouth in Southwest Georgia, and it
Is one that may at first seem almost
incredible, but it is nevertheless
It ue, and can be proven.’’
“What is it? Something very unus
ual?’’ asked tlie scribe.
‘Yes, sir, it is very unusual; some
thing that is without precedent in the
!riato*y of this country.’’
“For a fan?”
"Yes, air, for a fact.”
“Then what is it?"
“Well, sir, th? pine trees; trees that
arc perhaps two hundred years old
and have stood the droutha of ages,
are actually dying for water on the
pipe-day lands near the rivet. I can
show you fifty acres of the lies! lim
bered land I own, and after you have
seen it I think you will agree with me
that there is not a pine tree on U that
will survive tho drouth. Tho trees are
all dead and dying for rain. You see,
whan this pipe-clay land gets dry it is
the dryest soil in the world, and there
lias not been enough nun on mine to
wet It since early last spring.”
“You think then. Colonel, Ihia
drouth is without a precedent in South
west Georgia?"
"There’s no doubt about it, sir-
none in tlie world. I have been here
a long time, and have never known or
heard of a drouth that would begin to
compare with this one.’’
