Bat it skim .from a letter recently
written by him ’to Jbdge Wright, of
Borne, and published in the Courier of
that city, that he is not a believer in
protection par set that he stands square
ly on the platform deliverance of the
Chicago-,Democratic convention; that
he opposes raising a cent of revenue
beyond what the necessities of the
Government require, and that only
such protection as is Incident to a reve

It is evident from this that Senator
Brown—if he honestly stated his
views, doesn’t stand with the organa
that denounced the tariff plank in the
Democratic platform, and that railed
at Mr. Cleveland, all through the
campaign, for refosing to declare

Weekly met Carter near Oehlockonee
Station, some time since, at which time
there was a dispute between them.
Weekly is said to hive been of an ■over

presumption is that Carter killed him
in self-defence. This impression Is
borne out by the fact that the slain man
bad an open knife grasped in his hand
when he wss picked up.
Weekly leaves a wife and child to

Defective Mail Service.
The mail service between Albany
and all points south and east of the
city is simply abominable. It requires
about three days for the QuittnaD pa
pers to reach this office, after they are
issued. A letter to Quitman and the
reply call tor five or six days In tile
transmission. The Savannah papers
are usually two days old when they
reach our table.
This is due, we suppose, to a combi
nation of circumstances, in which im
perfect railroad schedules and Inef
ficient rente agents play the most
prominent parts. Indeed, the trouble
is sijftfcmtly accounted for when at-
tribtfcfjto these two causes.
AjWTti lie hoped that steps will be
tiMWto remedy this evil. It Is more
than simply vexatious. The business
interests involved demand eome’con-
sideration at the hands of those that are
responsible for the delays and uncer
tainties in question. Let the proper
remedies be applied.

Macon • is a bright^ substantial city,
With u solid present and a promising
futtn-e. It is a city ot fair women and
enterprising men—of churches and
colleges and workshops, of all that
enters into the make-up of a growing,
prosperous community. But this isn’t
all. It fa a city of ghosts. There fa
nearly always one on hand, “doing the
town," Jn the most approved ghostly
fashion.
This is an advantage of which few
cities can boast, A good, tame, socia
ble ghost-one that can be relied on to
niakc even the dullest day lively and
agreeable to the natives, is an institu
tion worthhaving. When,in addition
to all this, it fa a trained ghost that can
carry its head in a bag, or in its hands,
or in its overcoat pocket, or even leave
it at homo, according to the whim of
the moment, the aoqufaiticn appears in
an unusually inspiring light.
Now Macon has just such a ghost,
and it is not too much to say that it
hasn’.tamore useful citizen. Bightly
utilized, and treated with becoming
respect and consideration, It Will act as
a guardian over the property of the
citizens for a much more extensive
heat than a policeman fa accustomed to
travel; and, being headless whenever
desired, it win forego the privilege—so
dear to the ordinary guardians of the
city, of occasionally nodding on post.
The present city council fa composed
of wise men, and they will see to it
that tlic headless ghost fa put on active
police duty, and that it be given the
entire city for its beat.
