Da/ Vi-; ton, in his railroad speech
in theil'iusc the other day, spoke of the
! “flopping’? of some of the papers, and
we notify that the ftvc or six papers in
tlie State that have. been waging war
on the bill to modify the powers of the
Rail road Commission have had a good
deal to. say about the “flopping” of
some of their contemporaries. Parson
Felton well knows that there is good
scripture for those Who come In at the
eleventh hour. But the News and
Adyestiskk takes none of these
charges of “flopping” to itself. Its
present position on the railroad ques
tion and as to the right of appeal from
the Commission is the same that it has
been for tour years past. We Vflopped”
four years ago when wc .saw the cotton
receipts of Albany falHngoffeveryyear
uu,der the arbitrary “power” of the
immaculate and infallible Commission
from whose decisions there was no ap
peal, either by the railroads or the peo
ple, and when wc realized that Albany,
like Atlanta, Macon, Augusta. Savan
nah, Columbus nnel all other “compe
titive points”-in the State had been
biitty worsted in the deal that placed
the railroad interests and rate-fixing
power of the State into tbe’hands of
three men. Tho position that any
class of property In the State should be
denied the right of appeal to the courts
is utterly indefensible, and the “flop”
of the A tlauta Constieutinn and oilier
papers that tried to hold on to it for a
long time was tn the right direction,
even if it did come a little late. It is
better for a xiewajttperto “flop,” when
it ices it is on tho wrong side of any
question, than to rum a deaf ear to
reason and argument and hide behind
subterfuges.
