glad to see Ireland have her own par

Flood Bock Island, which stood in
the passage known as Hell’s Cate,
covering an area of one acre in extent
above the surface of the water, and
eight acres more beneath the surface,
has recently been biown up. The
weight of the explosives was more
than three hundred thousand pounds.
The cost was enormous, hat the work
once done is forever done.
Well for us had a different policy
been pursued, and bad onr statesmen
had less of the independent high tone
about them, looked more into the fu

more from a business standpoint. As
it is, with all our boasts of Southern

2d TUESDAY IN NOVEMBER
JTeart, at the Morehouse, on Washington
Street, Albany, Ga., lately occupied by F. C.
ia Albany on Wednesday, Nov. 18.
This stupendous combination of lead
ing Railroad Shows is meeting this
season with patronage so extraordinary
that the management have been fre-
quently compelled to give three exhibi
tions a day in order to accommodate
the immense crowds in attendance.
Excursions are arranged on the differ
ent railroads from all points within a
radius of fifty miles from the place of
exhibition, and the instances are rare
when the trains do not come in crowd
ed to their capacity with visitors.
Their tents, although the greatest both
in number aud magnitude of any show
traveling, are frequently found inade
quate to bold the people, and in order
to give the varied programme in detail,
and without omitting any of its fea
tures, the management 'find their
many acres of canvas necessary to be
an absolute necessity.
The pair of huge blood-sweating
hippopotami owned by Messrs. Sells
are the only pair in. the entire world,
and the only pair that have ever been
exhibited, or probably ever will be.
They are truly the behemoths of holy
writ, the wonderful scriptural marvels
described in holy Job. The herds of
giraffes owned by Messrs. Sells are
also curiosities greater than any own
ed by any other show. The eutire
world of animals, in fact* includes
wonders rare and strange from all
families of the quadruped world. The
all-star list of 200 first-class performers
la an unequaled galaxy of superior
merit, and leads anything which we
have ever seen or heard of in the known,
world—200 artists, and every artist a
star. In a word, the circus and men
agerie are superior to auy other trav
eling or tented exhibition of which
anything is known, and will, we are
confident, meet with surprising suc
cess here.

Beecher, with all the criticism that
has been passed upon him, is a much
better man than John Sherman.
Slavery being abolished, like old Hor
ace Greely, he desires unity of the sec
tions. Last Thursday, Boston paid
tribute to the dead Graut, and Beecher
was the orator of the day. One para
graph of his speech is so striking, and
so in contrast with the utterances of
John Sherman and Foraker, that we
quote it:
‘*The tiding* of ids death, long expcctcd^&re

ers, eminent statesmen and scholars from ail
civilized nations gave sincere tokens of sym

published more reports, ordinances and

contract. We made this showing to
the Council at the beginning of last
year, and they conceded the justice of
paying us according to the services
rendered and the material consumed.
But our philanthropic yet unhappy
contemporary insinuates that when
the present Council was inducted into
office, the Mayor and Council intend
ed to let out the city printing to the
lowest bidder, but that the matter was
placed in the hands of: the Committee
on Yrihttng, of which L. T.

sort of hobnpbbery the patronage was
promised to the News and Advehtis-

by this paper.

>r on ^F on<: ^y. No jury cases could be
j. tried. Tbe Superior court of Worth
>r had, also, to be adjourned for legal
defects in preparing the jury liists.
[_ The law is plain In respect to pre-
, s paring the jury lists. The duties are
q simple. No special intellect is requir
ed to perform them. But care and
^ fidelity are demanded.
^ We have not space for all* the law
c pertaining to this matter, but we Will
f quote section 3,910 of the Code: “The
Clerk of the Superior Court shall make
s out in a book lists of the names re-
B spectlvely contained In the grand jury
5 box, and in the traverse jury box,
' alphabetically arranged, and place
c said book in his oflice, after the lieu
P therein have been certified by the Ordi
nary, Clerk and Commissioners to
j contain, respectively, all the names
. placed in said jury boxes.”
In addition to this, or rather prior to.
this, it is*the duty of the Ordinary to
, swear in the jury commissioners. Now,
in Worth and Baker,the commissioners
were not sworn in, nor was the * Vcr-
tifleate” required attached to the jury
lists. This failure in performance of
duty forced an adjournment of Court
in Baker and Worth.
Superior Courts are expensive. -But I
they are necessary evils. Like taxes, j
they have to come, sooner or later, and
no use to defer the evil day. And !
when all parties concerned have gath
ered at the court house—there on the
grounds ready for business, the care- 1
lessness or neglect of duty which *
interferes with the transaction of bus
iness is certainly very reprehensible, i
Officers of the law should post them- e
selves, and not trille wiih the public \
business, as a matter of no serious
concern. a
