Harrow Escape from Death.
On Friday, April 2d, Mrs. Lippitt,
wife of Mr.T.M.Lippitt,was out driving
near Isabella, Worth comity. In the
buggy with her was her nephew*,
Charlie CoUios, aged 15 yean, her lit
tle boy, five years old, and her little
daughter, two years old.
A strong wind had arisen, and they
suddenly discovered that a large pine
tree was falling across the road imme
diately before them. The position was
a horrible ouo and filled them with
dismay. In this dreadful dilemma,
there was but one alternative. It was
too late to check tbe horse and nothing
but to nrge him forward remained to
them. The horse sprang forward but
uot an instant too soon. The giant
tree fell to the earth with a crash, just
grazing_the rear wheels of the buggy.
The horse was frightened nt the
crash, and became unmanageable. He
was soon running at full speed.
Charlie Collins, with _ remarkable
presence of mind, lifted the little girl
from the seat and dropped her to the
ground behind tlie vehicle. She fell
to the ground and lay motionless. This
alarmed Charlie, and Jie sprang from
the buggy to go to her.
On the frightened animal plunged

left thigh in two places. 3Irs. Lippitt’s

sustaiued is considered serious. Dr.

injured lady and boy. The little chil

With a countenance more serious
than usual, Mr. J. R. Forrester was.
hastening up tlie street with a huge
roll of red fianhel on his shoulder,
Tuesday afternoon.
“Where are y>ti going?” asked a
reporter of tjie News and Advertis
er, seeing something important was
on foot from the rapid strides of the
ped»*strirtti.
“1 am afraid of a freeze to-night,
and I’m on my way to my melon
patch,” was the quick repty, and on
sped the melon grower on his impor
tant mission.
Thu reporter wended his way to his
office, not without considerable per
plexity of mind—trying to solve the
mystery of the huge bolt of red 11an
nel. What did he want with that in
a melon patch? Was he going to spend
the night in the patch ? Or was it to
be cut up In little squares^ like yposee
in quilts, to be laid over the tender
melon-plants? If so, why would not
cotton cloth - do? Was there especial
virtue in the wool, or was the desire to
paiiit the patch red, and thus strength
en the plants against the cold bites of
anapril frost? It is yet a mystery.

Where the Bullets Lodged
Dr. Andrews, of Washington, Wilkes
county, has always been afraid of raad
dogs, and when a servant reported to
him on Friday tliat a strange dog was
cutting some curious capers under his
front steps, be seized bis old fashioned
five barrel pistol, and prepared for ac-
t on. His first movement was to lo
cate the exact whereabouts of tlie do»
and as soon as this was done be made
careful preparations to give the ani
mal a speedy and painless death. The
dog was under the steps frothing at
the mouth, barking and howling,, and
it seemed so uangerous to approach
him, tliat the doctor stood on the top
and found' a knot hole through
h he could take aim. At the first
shot he noticed that his arm was pow
der burnt, but the dog did not appear
to be disturbed at ail. At tbe second
it was the same way. and he determin
ed^ seeing tliat the dog did not mind
being shot, that the next fire should
be effective. Approaching a little
nearer around the end of the steps, he
fired the third time, and the rabid ani
mal seemed to enjoy the fan. When
tbe show was over, the dog went about
j his business and the doctor was puz
zled to account for his failure to do any
damage by three shots from a good
pistol. A close' examination showed
that all of the bullets had stopped in
the barrel, the first one being caught
and the others lodged behind it.

A BUST SCENE.
A Crowded Store And a Heavy
Trade.
A reporter of the News and Ad
vertiser stepped into the large mer
cantile bouse of N. A A. F.* Tift A Co.
last Saturday, and there bebeldji busy
scene. Indeed it was a difficult mat
ter to get into the store without crowd
ing and push big people aside. There
was at least one hundred and thirty
customers in the store when we en
tered it, ail examining and buying
goods. Every clerk in every depart
ment was busy. We were astonished
at this unusually busy scene at this
season of the year.
Approaching Mr. Carter, who was
himself busy waiting on customers, we
asked, “What does this mean? Where
do all these people come from ?” 3Ir.
Cutliff, who was also behind the coun
ter, replied, “This is nothing unusual
with us. Call in any Saturday and
you will find as large a crowd and our
house just as busy.”
We strolled through the house and
were surprised at the magnitude of the
stock, which consists of every article
known to tbe mercantile business,
from a steam engine to a spool of
thread. N. A A. F. Tift A Co. is an
old house of established reputation, of
many years stauding, and compara
tively unlimited means. Their repu
tation extends far beyond their trade
territory, and their credit is unlimited.
The business of tills house is steadily
increasing, and few men ever go else
where after an'inspection of the goods
and obtaining the prices.
Messrs. Titt A Co. also keep a full
line of fertilizers of the best quality in
the market and of standard goods.
Their cotton .gins aud agricultural im
plements are of the best and most pop
ular manufacture, and indeed*every
article offered for sale by them ta first-
class.
Last of all, and by no means least,
tbe consideration and courtesy ex
tended customers by proprietors and
employees at N. A A. F. Tift A Co’s is
all that could be desired.
