TO BF. StrP.inD IN ATLANTA.
Birmingham, Ala., February 28.—
Mr. Frank A. IIiiburn, who is with
each a dance was the sole guardian of
hi boy. The correspondent writes:
“The madam and the boy are both
looking exceedingly well.**

i body of Dick Hawes.
I Mr. Hilburn was a conductor on the
i Atlanta division of the Georgia Pacific

HIS BOY WITH HIM.
The prisoner then said If lie knew
that he could take Ids choice between
freedom with the knowledge that he
would have to live over the list six
years of Ids life, and death on the
gallows, he would walk up and take
tbe last without a murmur. He told
the doctor he longed to see his litt’e
boy once more, but he dreaded the
parting with him for the last time far
mere than lie did his cowing death.
About 3 o’clock Jim Huwea, his w;:«-
and Dick’s little boy drove up to the
jail in a close carriage, and in a few
minutes the sidewalks were lined with
people gazing at the blank walls.
HE TURNED PiLR.
Hoon after the three enteied the j.il
a terrific thunder storm set iti and
continued for several hours. vivid
was the lightning's Hash andso loud
was the thunder’s peal that the guilty
man turned pale and trembled, and
the gloomy conversation was often in
terrupted until the clathiug sounds oi
heaven were silenced.
Jim Hawes stated to a friend ia^t
night that uo one knew anything . j
what was in his brother’s confession
book except himself and one ol the
ministers who had it locked up in nis
safe.
WHERE THE BOOK 18.
Rev. Dr. McCoy, editor of tnc Chris
tian Advocate and the proprietor of a
job printing establishment, has bem a
constaut visitor to Hawes, and it is
thought ho lins the coufessiou. 1 ask
ed him whether or not this was true,
but he refused to answer one way or
tbe other. He said he knew' it w as the
wish of Hawes that nothing should be
made publie until the book was print
ed aud bound,
ceeds of the sale to go toward paying
for the education of his little boy.
DID HE THINK OF SUICIDE.
I learned from a reliable source that
Hawes has had with him for the last
few days a little blue bottle, supposed i
to have contained poison. It was
thought he would take the contents
after he bade his boy good-bye, and
thus cheat the gallows. Nothing of;
this kind happened and it may be that
but all facts seem to show “Madam”
j:i an unenviable light, and Larkin-
Garlin, although transgressed against
by her, was not himself blameless. It
is to be presumed that he was guilty of
sonic shadowy act in New York last
Rammer that compelled his immediate
departure, and that that act was un
known to his wife, as was also his
alias, but that his family knew of the
lads: and he was afraid to let his wife
know of his whereabouts for fear she
would have him brought to justice.

That is one correspondent’s view of
the matter, though why he should
wish to punish his little toddling boy
as well is beyond comprehension.
Will “Madam” get the certificate?
The News and Advertiser man
tried yesterday evening to see Dr. W.
A. Strother, who attended Cariin in
his last moments, but up to present
writing had been unable to do so, and
can’t say whether he will fill out the
blank in Carlin’s name or not. lie can

that the original of the picture died
here under the name of James Larkin,
told him that Mrs. Mary Kennealy of
New Bedford was his sister, that a
match-box in his pocket had **J. C.”
engraved on it, and that 31 re. Ken
nealy, when telegraphed, that her
brother, James Larkin, bad died, had
the death notice of John Carlin insert
ed in the New Bedford paper.
Would this be sufficient evidence for
the insurance company?
It might not be, if they wished to
ontest the payment of the insurance
money, but it would satisfy any jury
to whom the case was referred.

There was to be company at dinner,
and Bobby’8 mother had cautioned
him to be careful of his behavior, es

The older people were rather numer
