The people of .Dougherty end from
surrounding towns end visitors from
all over the country flocked into Al
bany Sundey to hear the distinguished
divine who had been secured by Dr.
W. A. Duncan, the head of the Geor
gia Chautauqua, to preach the open
ing sermon, and by the time the hoar of the train on which Hiaa Martin came
of service arrived, the Chautauqua
Tent Tabernacle was packed, with an
audience of over 2,000.
The services were opened by that
magnificent character whom all Al
bany loves—Dr. W. A. Duncan, in a
abort address to Chsutauquans, which
was highly euioyed. It is to Dr. Dun
can more than all else that the exist
ence of Georgia Chautauqua U due,
and any tiling from him is always lis
tened to with pleasure by his admirers.
The choir was the Chautauqua
chorus, presided over by Dr. Palmer,
with Mra. L. Geiger as organist.
Rev. R. R. Meredith, D. D., of Tre-
mont Temple, filled the pulpit, and he
preached a grand sermon, even beyond
what was expected from his high rep
utation. Ills text was: “Thy testimo
nies are wonderful,” and the sublimicy
of the text was fully shown in the sub
lime discourse, and the doctor’s im
pressive manner,pure diction and hap
py illustration were a combination
that was Irresistible in its attraedve-
ness. His subject was really, ‘‘That
Grand and Good Old Book—the Bible.”
There were many dimmed eyes in his
audience several times during his dis
course, and the thrill of his enthusi
asm waa always felt. It was as noble
an exposition of the beauty and reality
of God’s word, and as complete an an
nihilation of infidelity, as was ever
heard from any rostrum. Dr. Mere
dith’s earnestness Is his distinctive
feature, and he at once impresses his
audience that he believes every beauti
ful sentence he utters, and would die
to defend their truth if necessary.
There waa not a soul present but
fait regret when the doctor ceased
speaking, and all congratulated them
selves upon being vouchsafed the
sweet privileges of hearing him.
The music, by the Chautauqua
chorus, under charge of the gifted Dr.
H. R. Palmer, was superb, and car
ried the audienoe to the highest planes
of bliss; in fact, each and every one
wa* tn rapport over It.
IN THE AFTERNOON.
The Veaper Services in the after
noon at 5 o’clock were largely attend
ed, the Chautauqua tent being well
tilled. The services were beautiful
and impressive, and the music was a
moat enjoyable feature.
IV THE EVENING,
at the Methodist church Rev. G. S.
Johnson, the pastor gave his audience
a pleasant and edifying discourse on
John ill, 16: “For God so loved the
world that he gave his only begotten
Son, that whosoever believeth on Him,
should not perish, bnt shall have life
eternal.” MV. Johnston held his
hearers in interest from beginning to
end.
The choir, composed of seven or
eight of the sweetest and prettiest
young ladles in Christendom, was
uudar the charge of Dr. H. R. Palmer,
the magical musical director, who pre
sided at the piano. The music was
flue and the rendition of “Hark, Hark,
my 8oul!” particularly sweet and
touching. The Rev. Mr. Eppes gave
the closing prayer in an earnest and
powerful manner.
At the Baptist church that gifted and
versatile journalist and preacher,
Bov. J. L. Uaderwood, of the Camilla
Clarion, gave hla hearers a bright, im
pressive and profound discourse from
the text “I was glad when they said
unto me, let us go into the house
of the Lord,” and presented the
Bible truths in his usual strong
and happy manner. The music
by the choir was superb, and the en
tire service was a most enjoyable re
ligious occasion.
All the services of the day were
thronged by immense crowds, and all
the churches were filled to their

Here are the communications:
MR. CLARK’S VERSION.
Editors Xeics and Advertiser:
In your paper Saturday was an arti
cle headed “Railroad ^Carelessness,”
which does Mr. Guerry, the conductor
Christianity and Millinery.
It is a difficult task f jr me to harmon
ize Christianity and cruelty; they do
not seem consistent. Perhaps the
heart and the head do not hold a very
close relationship, but I believe they
do. I think a little of what is in the
heart should be expressed on the head,
aad yet, a great deal of this appear
ance of cruelty is thoughtlessness;
but, have we a right to be
thoughtless? How many beautiful
women enter the churches every Sun
day, and bow their heads in prayer to
the loving Father of all, while their
bonnets testify how slightly they pro
tect or love his little ones.
Let your heart speek! A bonnet with
a de*d bird on it cannot be truly artis
tic or enjoyable; it tells of innocent
little creatures plunged alive into hot
i water or otherwise cruelly killed—it
| tells a story too sad to leave one atom
{ of admiration for the bonnet; or much
for the weerer.—Sel.
great injustice, and puts
your readers in a latee
to Albany
him before
light.
Mr. Guerry has no tears of the effect
of the article, when read by anyone
who knows him, but many of your
readers do not know him, and in the
minds of these the article referred to
would, no doubt, prejudice them
against Mr. Guerry, of whom we, nor
any other railroad, have a conductor
more attentive to the safety and com
fort of lady passengers.
Mr. Guerry stepped oft'his train yes
terday, as is his custom, near the
water tank. He came by the office for
the mail, and went to his train at the
passenger shed, where he arrived just,
in time to see Miss Martin entering a
hack. He knew nothing of any
trouble Miss Martin experienced until
to-day, and regrets the matter exceed
ingly, but does not consider himself at
fault. Had Miss Martin waited one
minute before leaving the train, Mr.
Guerry would have gone in and as
sisted her and given her every neces
sary attention.
The top of the step of this coach is
just 15 inches from the top of platform
and this is the distance a passenger has
tOfltep in alighting from a train, which
is not excessive.
As you state, we are dependent upon
the people for our revenue, and we are
friends to the people, and I arnglad to
say that most of them arc friends to us,
and it is an undeniable fact that those
who are brought most frequently in
contact witli us are our warmest
friends, and are less liable to entertain
any of that narrow-minded, causeless
prejudice against railroads and their
employes, which, 1 am sorry to say,
seems to exist in some.
I know of no factor which lias con
tributed more to our country's, and 1
may add, to Albany’s prosperity than
her rail roads.
We need a better and larger passen
ger depot here, and we will build it,
but we claim that the present one is
not unsafe, nor did it, in any way that
I can see, cause Miss Martin’s fail. In
short, we have no ill-will toward any
one. On the contrary we want to, and
will do, all in our power to serve them
faithfully and justly, but can never
expect to give all satisfaction or have
all friendly towards us, for 1 have seen
persons who were so unreasonable a«
not to be satisfied with your paper.
Now, you couldn’t help this, You

A Mr\v Method of Treating Disease
What are they? There is a new de
parture in the treatment of disease. It
consists in the collection of the
speeches used by noted specialists of
Europe and America, and bringing
them within the reach of all. For in
stance the treatment pursued by
special physicians who treat indiges
tion, stomach and liver troubles only,
was obtained and prepared. The
treatment of other physicians, cele
brated for curing catarrh was procured
and so on till these incomparable cures
now include disease of the lungs, kid
neys, female weakness, rheumatism
and nervous debility.
Tlii s new method of‘‘one remedy for
one disease” must appeal to the com
mon sense of al! sufferers, many ol
whom have experienced the ill effects,
and thoroughly realize the absurdity
of the claims of Patent Medicines
which are guaranteed to cure every ill
out of a single bottle, and the use of
which, as statistics prove, lias ruined
more stomachs than alcohol. A circu

.Vetas and Advertiser:
I write for the purpose of making
some corrections in the niece you pub

unfortunately fell from the Blakely
train al the dei*ot on the 21st insc.
When the train from Blakely arrives
at Albany it has to be carried up to the
switch near the Oil Mill ami then
backed to the depot. The rules of the
Central railroad requires the conductor
to ride on the rear of the train to avoid
accidents. The conductor alluded to
in your article (Mr. dim Guerry, than

there, the lady spoken of was attempt

that “if he had been there to assist her

Mr. Guerry would have been there
in ample time after performing his

condition was very feeble and her
strength not sufficient to allow her to
reach the platform without a fall, been
