the other day. Hh&d not been seen
at his favorite table in his chosen res

three or four friends came in by turns
the next evening and noticed his
handsome face smiling there they all
came up and greeted him warmly.
Of course they sat down at his tabic.
A dinner with the Colonel which did
- not end with a story would be no din
ner At all, and every one knew from
the light in the Colonel's eye that he
was waiting only for the cigars.
“Never tell a story at dinner until you
are through eating,” Is his rule. This
is the way be began his opening one
of the season:
“This a little bit of a world,’ and you
are always meeting some one wherever
you go. I ran across a man on my
steamer going over whom I bad not
seen in a great many years. I don’t
know whether you ever felt your
heart really stop beating, but it is a
wonderful sensation, as if all the
world were melting away from you.
That is the way I felt when I saw that
man’s pale face and his dark eyes and
hi3 white teeth. It wasn’t that I was
afraid he would do me any harm. It
wasn’t that I feared him as an enemy,
but a scene which I don’t like to re
call came back to me with a rush that
made me dizzy. He did not recognjze
me, and we never came close together,
but that first night I could not sleep
to my life. I don’t krow what he
does. I don’t know—but let me tell
you a story.
“We were a pretty rough lot that
fall and winter. I don’t know just
why it was. Most of us were steady-
going men usually, but there was an
element among us that kept the whole
town in a fermerft, and you know that
was danger DU3 out West In those days.
There was too much fighting and too

especially among the officers of all the
great European powers. The Aus
trian array takes the lead in thi3 mat
ter. From 1S85 to 1837 a yearly aver
age of 122 suicides is recorded for
every 100,000 effective troops. In 1839
the number was 149. Death by sui
cide represents a fifth part of the
whole mortality of the Austrian army.
No disease is more deadly. The Ger
mans report half the numbei; the
Italian army about one-third; the
French army about one-fourth; the
English army in the home service
about one-sixth; the rate in the Rus
sian army is nearly the same, while in
the s7)anish army it is least of all.
There are some curious fact3 about
these .suicides. In the Europeairar-
mies, especially in Austria, It is the
young soldiers who kill themselves
daring the first month of their ser
vice. Suicides are the most frequent
among the cavalry and infantry, and
in the latter among the soldiers who
are accused and awaiting trial.
The rao3t frequent method Is shoot
ing, though hanging and drowning are
frequent methods. The infantry use
firearms, and ifsually aim at their
heads. The mounted soldiers hang
themselves by their horse bridles. The
Algerian soldiers almost always shoot
themselves through the body, perhaps
because the Arabs think it is intamous
to mutilate the head. In Austria a
third of the suicides are attributed to a

and Martinez entered and killed him
by stabbing him eleven times. After
this the store was looted of its valu
ables. The city was shocked ever the
crime as it seldom is, aad within two
months Martinez and his companions
had been captured and sentenced
to death, and his accomplices to
from sixteen to nineteen years’ im
prisonment.
£esterday morning Martinez was
executed in Belem prison under the
following startling circumstances:
The prisoner, on being conducted to
the place of execution, gave the cus
tomary embrace to the judge who hsd
sentenced him and the prison officials.
Then, complaining of being cold, he
was handed a blanket. He stepped to
ward Miguel Cabrera, chief of the
secret service police, who had been
instrumental In bringing him to just
ice, apparently to give him informa
tion concerning where the ucrecover-
ed jewelry from the Jobbery was hid
den. As soon as he had reached a
point near Cabrera he said: “They
are well placed fin Puente Blanca.”
He had hardly said this before Cab
rera noted a movement of his arm, as
if to take something from under the
blanket.
Suddenly Martinez threw the
blanket aside, disclosing a long kuife,
which, as quick as lightning, he at-
