Candidate Stevens’ Humor.
Ihe Neivs ani, Adveetjser
publishes an interview with Mr.
O. B. Stevens of Dawson, candi-
date for congress. Mr. Stevens
in his interview, taken from the
Macon Telegraph, says:
STfVENS’, ,'rr.ATFOUM.
I mot Mr. Stevens yesterday
and asked what his platform was.
With a twinkle in his eye and a
non-committal smile on his face,
lie replied: ‘ I have only three
planks. First, I promise if elect
ed to be present at roll call. Sec
ond; to vote on all pending ques
tions. Third, draw my pay
promptly when due.”
Continuing, Mr. Stevens said:
! am just from Thomasviilc.
There I had a consultation with
Oapt. Stone of ‘platform" notorie
ty. Stone has added mine to
his and I have his under advise
ment As you interviewed the
Captain yourself at Dublin and
published his views til tile Tele
graph, you will recall his ‘due
hill’platform, wherein he propos
es for the government to make
every farmer's due bill a legal
tender for his debts. Stone and
I will combine and fight Wooten

tween t L ' iL and the Democratic.
r 011form, but Mr. Stevens was
called away anil his real views I
never learned.
Now it will be seen 11 lilt Mr.
Stevens claims that lie and Capt
Stone are on the same line and
will pull together.
Everybody who road Capt
Stone’s address, to his Coffee coun
ty friends saw at a glance that it
was a piece of humor.
Mr. Steven s now appears also
as a man of infinite jest.’ Is his
candidacy like Capt. Stone’s one
of humor? The timc3 demands
business not fun.
Capt. Stone was interviewed
some two months since by Mr.
Callaway of the Telegraph, and
a='Mr. Stone ran the joke on Mr.
Stevens and got him to take his
platform under advisement to add
it, Stevens’" platform of drawing
pay merely, it is due our readers
to lot them know what Mr. Ste
vens has under advisement.
capt. stone’s platform:
Dcm.in, Jan. 1G.—[Special.]-
It is well for a county like ours
in distressful times like these,
that emergencies bring to the
front men who can solve our dif
ficult problems and save our peo
ple from bankruptcy and ruin.
Capt. John F. Stone of Jesup,
Ci a., is one of these emergency
men, and he is now known as a
man with a remedy. I met him
last night in the rotunda of the
Hooks House as lie was shaking
hands \yith his old friends.
“Captain,” said I, “is it true
that you are in the race for con
gress?”
“That depends. I’m not if
Heftry G. Turner will make the
race. I admire Turner. Ho is
the ablest man in public life
from the south and ought to he
in the senate; but if he does not
run I'm in it. My platform will
relegate these ‘small fry’ to the
rear.”
“Captain, I understand that
you laid down your platform in
a recent speech in Coffee county
and .that your’ views were
applauded and endorsed. What
did you say to the farmers?”
The Captain looked at me as if
I were an audience of 500 voters,
attaching to me such a sudden
importance that I nearly fainted.
“I will give you a brief synop
sis of my remarks:
"Fellow sufferers and farmers
of Ooffco, multitudinous have
bet'n the remedies propounded
tor the relief of this country.
These are strange times and men
have cut strange didos in our fa
ces and before high heaven. We
have seen "Wade Hampton jerked
from the United States senate and
six Georgia congressmen thrown
from dock into the Waters of ob
scurity. We have seen Gen. Gor
don and Phil Cook join the great
secret caravan for political
irt ngtli; we have seen Colquitt
turn away from Cleveland and
embrace Hill: we have seen Tom
W atsoll resign his land loan agen-
! cy, burn his law books, abandon
Democracy and liis old associates
to become the high-priest of a new
iaith and a new party; we have
seen an Alliance legislature, elect-
high tariff, low tariff, tariff reform,
state banks, free-and unlimited
coinage, Hill with two issues,
Hill with one issue, Hill with no
issues; we have seen the yard
stick applied to time honored
leaders and good old Southern
Democratic papers boycotted; the
very skies have been clouded with
suggestions of relief, and yet men
mourn as those without hope, and
they have worn the very seats of
their trousers threadbare, shout
ing “more money, more money,
relief, relief!”
“Farmers, why has this been?
Why all this commotion and dis
turbance? I tell yon our old
leaders nor this new crop of re
generated statesmen have found
for you no remedy. All is yet
chaos. Burning law books will
not answer, but I have discover
ed the great remedy. I have it-
My plan will not lead you out of
the party nor into closed doors.
It will leave the democracy in
tact, the white-man on top, the
good old south solid, and the
whole people happy and content
ed. The first is for yon to send
me to congress, where I can put
through my measure, for I pro
pose not to desert it after the
manner of tho sub-treasury lead
ers, but to stand by it and until
heaven’s las* tnumler shakes the
work 1 oclow. I want no sub
treasury or land loan bills making
the government the great high
sheriff, the collector, the eject
ment officer, throwing people out
of doors as English landlords do
Irish tenants.
My platform is simple—a child
can understand it—but it gets
there, and is efficacious and all
powerful and all saving. It is
simply this:
CAPT. STONE’S PEATFOIH.
“Let the government make ev
ery farmer’s due bill a legal ten
der for all his debts .” Here
tho prospective congressman
halted for breath and I asked,
‘How did your plan take?”
“Take 1 why I swept the field.
The people are with m*. Some
may doubt it. After my speech
solid old farmer came to me
and said: ‘Captain, I’m with you
but do you reckon you can make
the due bill business work.
Then whispered th* Captain to
me in a tone patronizing wbile
confidential, “If my due bill
scheme is not enough to put me
:n congress, I have in reserve
this in addition; Let the govern
ment own the railroads, issue ev-
e.-y man a free pass, abolish
freight tariffs, erect a lighthouse
in every county and give to the
rural districts [(first) a -free mail
delivery.”

At once he thought thatjthU young
man had been drowned and that the
boat without an occupant floated
down the river to tell the sad' tale of
his death.
He at once sought the city and noti
fied relatives of the young man who lo
their anxiety, started on a search.
Judge Sam Smith, a. brother of the
young man, iu company with Dr. W.

As they came back to the city they
encountered a negro who told them
that D-ane Thomas had seen the

In a hurry Judge Smith hastened
home and there found that the young
man was safe beyond all accident.
It seems that Mr. Smith in company
with his friend Will Kemp started out
yesterday morning on a fishing trip to
the creek North of the city. In Mr.
Smith’s boat they paddied up the
river until they encountered the shoals
Mr. Smith had off his coat that he

Mr. Kemp, who has recently returned
from the State University on account

When they struck the shoals Mr.

And the boat floated on down with

This was the c&iiM'of the excite

given bat every one seemed to smile
broadly when it was known that the

only inconvenience being experienced
that of a thorough drenching.
