The meeting which placed these

peaceful harmony and unbounded
Democratic enthusism permeated the

There is probably not in the entire

The outlook for a harmonious agree

The large visible supply of cotton,
the uneasiness and anxiety caused by
the want of definite action on the anti

that before long new cotton will begin
to arrive from the fields, have com
bined for the past ten days to render
the markets extremely weak and sen
sitive. There has been almost no
speculation and the only trading done
has been in the way of liquidation.
This liquidation has been caused both
by uneasiness over the Hatch bill and
the indisposition or inability of those
who rushsd into the market anticipat

To deal in suppositions for a mo

Similarly Anstria-Hnngary reserves

However, tbe result of the confer

THE MUGWUMP,
The term “Mogwump” seems de
stined to remain as a permanent addi
tion to the American political vocabu
lary, It was first used in the cam
paign of 1881, and it was thought then
that it wonld speedily go the way
of suchabsolete political designations
as Hunker, Barnburner and Dough
face, the origin and meaning of which
are a complete mystery to the present
generation. Bug “Mugwump,” in
the phrase of the prospectus, “filled a
long-felt want.” It named a new
character In American politics—or a
new and modern phase of an old char
acter. So long as the character re
mains the term will survive. In the
beginning “Mugwump” was applied
in derision, like so many other politi
cal terms, and just as “Methodist” was
first used. The word comes trom one
of the New England Indian tongnes,
and was applied to a chief or man or
importance—and who felt his import
ance. It was with tbe latter thought
in mind that the word was used in
1881 of those Bepublicans who pro
fessed conscientious scruples against
voting for Mr. Blaine. -They were
also described as “Doctrinaires,” aB
“Dudes and Pharisees” and as “Hol
ier-than-thou’s.” In moments of im
potent and impolitic rage some papers
even blistered them with the scorching
appellation of “Sunday School politi
cians!” But gradually the other
epithets yielded place to “ Mugwump,”
and this remained sole and permanent
possessor of the field. What exasper
ated the bestowers of the name was
that those to whom it wss applied did
not in the least resent its application.
Far from that, they really seemed to
be proud of the name, began to speak
of themselves familiarly by it and to
boast of it as a noble distinction.
The Mugwump is a disturbing ele
ment in American practical politics.
He does not believe that any political
party possesses all the virtue and
patriotism the country affords. He
recognizes the good points of both
great parties—the weaknesses as well.
He knows the inevitable tendency of
political organizations to degenerate;
to prefer expediency to principle; to
trim their course to catch the fltfnl
breeze of temporary popular favor,
though such action may take them fai
out of the way laid down in their
gnldlng chart. He declines, therefore,
give unquestioning allegiance to
bie result of a sweeping Republican
victory in November.
“On the other hand and by the na
ture and necessity of tbe ideas involv
ed, the success of the Democracy is
death to the force bill project. Killed
in tbe election it can never be revived.
In this view of the contest what con
scientious Democrat can hesitate about
bis duty.

I may perform no deed ot great e-
nown,
No glorions aet to millions manifest;
Yet In my little labors up and down
I’ll do my best.
I may not paint a perfect masterpiece,
Nor carve a statue by the world con-
fest
A miracle of art; yet will not cease
To do my best.
My name f« not upon the rolls of fame,
*Tis on the page of common life Im
prest;
Bnt 1*11 keep marking, marking just
the same,
A nd do iny best.
Sometimes I sing a„ very simple song,
And send It outward to tte East or
West;
Although in silentness it rolls along,
I do iny best.
Sometimes I write a very little hymn,
The joy .within me can not be re-
prest;
Though no one reads, the letters are so
dim,
I do my beat.
And if I see some fellow traveler rise
Far, far above me; still with quiet
breast
I keep on climbing, climbing towards
the skies,
And do my best.
My very best, and if, at close of day,
Worn ont, I sit me down awhile to
- rest,
I still will mend my garments, if I
may,
And do my best.
It may not be the beautiful or grand,
Bnt I must try to be so careful, lest
Hail to be what’s put into my hand,
My very best.
Better and better every stitch must be,
The last a little stronger than the
rest,
Good Master! Help my ey*s that
they may see
To do my best.
