Royal Fluto Flayer. Frederick the Great made generous presents to all musicians except flute players. He played the flute remarka bly well himself, and his proficiency sometimes led to acts that caused dis appointment to his brother artists. A famous flutist once visited Potsdam and asked permission to play to the king; hoping tliat Frederick would show his appreciation of his skill by some valua ble gift. Frederick received -him graciously, and listened attentively while he played a difficult piece. “You play very well,” he said, “and I am very glad to have heard a virtuoso of such f.bility. I will give you a proof of my-satisfaction.” So saying he left the room. The mu sician waited, guessing at the probable nature of the “proof.” , Presently the king returned with his own flute and played the same piece which hr A just been executed for him. Then he bade his visitor good day, say- ing: ' “I have had the pleasure of hearing you, and it was only fair that you should hear me.”—Youth’s Companion. Savannah, Ga., Aprii 2G, 1SS9. The effect of gravitation in heaping up the sea waters upon the shores of conti nents is one of the most interesting, as well as the most curious and least con sidered, facts in connection with old ocean’s history. Thus the continents are all situated at tops of great hills or mountains of water, and to cross the At- lantic or any other ocean the ship has to first go down the sloping sheet, cross the valley and then climb the moan- ’tain of water on the other side before it safely reaches a harbor. In this connection the interestingxal- culation has been made that in mid ocean on the Atlantic the depression is | about tliree-fonrths of a mile below the level of the water at coast line, while a ship in traveling from San Francisco to Yokohama, Japan, mnst cross a valley at least a mile in depth.—St. Louis Re public. A Storage Battery Bocomotive. A storage battery locomotive has been put into operation in Wurtemberg, run ning from some paper mills at Ravens- hnrg to the station on the steam railroad, about 2J£ miles - away. This locomotive, which hauls pas sengers as well as freight, weiglis eight tons and carries 100 cells of a gelatinous storage battery, which sup ply current to the motor. The cells weigh two tons. The line has no very heavy grades. The locomotive makes on an average four trips daily and hauls a load of twenty tons between the two points in twenty minutes. It seems to do the qyork.—New York Telegram. The suggestion is made that the roll of battles in which Gen. A. P. Hill took part be inscribed on his monu ment at Richmond. It would make a long list, for Gen. Hill had a command in nearly every great battle of the war. * The mortality from what are called winter diseases is not easily estimated. Coughs, colds, bronchitis and sore throat make up fully one-half of the death rate. More people die from pneu monia, which first began as a “bad cold” than from consumption. Berry, One set held a meeting yesterday tea * | and appointed a committee to confer with Speyer & Co.. who have the un derhold on the Central.. These credi tors representing tho floating debt de clare that a reorganization of the com pany’s finances is needed at once. Thatls true enough, but it is illogical to pay the interest on the leased lines and in the same breath tell the stock and bond holders of snch lines that they must accept a scaling down of their holdings or of the interest._ So long as r. Southwestern stockholder gets hisY per cent, he is not much dis posed to agree to take 6 per cent, and much less five, One reason advanced for the pay ment of the interest on the Southwest ern stock is that a great block ot it is behind loans to another company and that the creditcJis of the latter threat ened to take the Southwestern collat eral if they did not get their interest. The Central’s Carolina roads are un profitable and most railroad men say thrt the Central would be better eff to throw them overboard. The South western is not earning 7 per cent, a year and the Georgia road has not been earning its rental. When the reorganizition plan comes, it will recommend lower retails on these leased properties. ■ Then it will be a question with the owners of these properties whether they can more by being independent or under a lease to some other sytem. ’ The question of the Central’s ma jority stock is more complicated than it is possible that the floating -debt creditors may insist upon tbe voting power beiEg accorded to the 42 200 shares. It is significant that Mr. Olcott and Mr. Fairchild, friends of the Terminal, are on the committee appointed yesterday.—Con stitution, take Lemon Elixir.
