People rushed to the doors at once to see if anything was the victim of tht- iightning’s fury. A telephone pole at Lamar’s corner was struck and the lightning toyed with the electric light wires. A crowd waiting for their mail in the office at the Albany Inu was almost frightened out of their wits by the electric display there and there was a terrific explosion ni the composing room of the News and Advertiser and a number ot badly frightened compositors. A number of telephones were burned out and it was thought that the elec tric light wires would be injured but the commercial circuit was found to be ail right. One of the chimneys of Mr. Herman Farkas’ house on Commerce street was shattered and the lightning set fire to the carpet in the room and for a little 'vhiie it looked as if a conflagration was to be the result. The alarm of fire was given. The entire department was out in less than five minutes after the flash but it was found that there %vas no need for their services and they returned to their respective houses none the worse for their Short and quick run. Just after the crash there was more than one white face seen on the streets and many nervous people were con siderably shocked by the electrical dis play. The rainfall which preceeded and followed the thunder storm was one of the hardest of the year. It was a reg ular old-time trash mower. SOME MORE DAMAGE. Thirty-two telephones were re ported at the Central office last night as having been burned out. This will give Electrician Kitchens a consider able job today repairing the damage. The electric lights in Capt. R. Hobbs residence yere burned out, but no fur ther damage was done. Several other electric lights were burned output were not reported last night. ABOUND THE BlADOND. Albany Won Yesterday—Teague Games, Eufaula, Ala., Aug. 4.—[Special. I —Foster and Reaves are wonders. Eufaula failed to find Foster yester day and lost the game by a score of G to 0. These games are fine ones and our boys are playing great ball. Eu- faulu’s team are good ones and usually the game is simply a fight between the batteries and the other boys have very little to do. Gagan goe3 in the box tomorrow and McKay will catch him. Friend goes in for Eufaula and Walton will catch him. - Kemp: But Eufaula was not the onlj place where good ball was played yesterday. The score in the Southern League was as follows yesterday: At Chattanooga: New Orleans, 0; Chattanooga, 0; fourteen innings and game called on account of darkness. At Birmingham: * Mobile, 1; Birminghom, G. At Macon: Memphis, 1; Macon, 8. At Atlanta: Montgomery, 2; Atlanta, 4. . He Don’t Want Any Store. Yesterday Mr. Sam Kitchens was engaged in putting in a telephone for Mr. C. M. Shackleford over in East Albany, and about ten minutes before the vivid flash of lightning he decided he would suspend work until after the storm w is over. Just about time he got all of his wire coiled up in his hand the flash came. It struck the wire and he made strenu ous efforts to drop it, but not until the lightning had run clear to the end could he drop it. The current ran around just as many times as there were coils in his hand and traveling as fast as it did itseemed almost an etern ity to him before the end was reached. He says he will put in no more tele phones on cloudy days because he knows when he has got enough. CHEAP CONVENTION RATES THAT IS WHAT ALBANY IS GOING TO ASK FOR. Albany, Ga,, June 25, 1892. A Mayor* Tetifle. for 8. P. C. I got relief partially from tbe first application, and with but few more applications, I was entirely recovered, for the time being. It did more good than any remedy I had ever used . I heartily recommend it. J. W. Carmine, Mayor Boston, Ga. For sale by W. H. Gilbert. The St-rond District Congressional Convention which will as>emb’e it tbiscity on August 17h will be one ol tbe most important ever held in tl.-e district, and a large number of p:op e will desire to Tit tend. Information lias been received from all over the fifteen counties iu tiie dis irict that large nninhers of peop’t want to be here on the 17 h. This has led to a movement to secure reduced rates on all the railroads lead ing into the City, and today Mayor Gilbert will address a n quest to all tiie railroads asking that the roads grant a reduction. The contest for the Congressional seat has been a most lively one and the people have been more greatly aroused than they have in years. The friends of each candidate will desire to be here and besides a reduced rate would catch a large number of ^people. Dawson, Cuthbert, Thomasville, Ft. Gaines, Bainhridge, Camilla, Tifton, Sumner, Isabella, B’akeiy, Leary, and Arlington will send more than one hundred people each if this re duced rate is granted, while the smaller places will send their full share of interested people. Verily, the people are awake and want to see the working of the most important convention ever called to gether in the wire grass regions and if the railroads will make this redaction the people will turn out. Albany will have within ter gates more people than ever assembled in a political meeting outside of Atlanta. For months the eyes of the people have been tamed upon the Second district, and they want to attend , the great convention. ‘ A welcome awaits them, too. Albany will thoroughly advertise the reduced rates if the railroads grant it. A Ten-Foot ••It’ug” Crush 3 the JLIfe Out of a S*x-Fooi •‘Battler.” A king snake, ten feet long, a nd a jattlesnake, six ieet long, thoughtless ly lejt in the same box in Donald Burns’s animal store. No. 115 Roose velt street, had a fight last Tuesday night which endek in the death of the rattler. The king snake belongs to the family of constrictors, and its squeeze is a great deal worse than its bite. The king i3 said to have an instinctive hatred for the rattler. Mr. Burns was taking a nap in his store, when he was awakened by the peculiar sound of the rattlesnake’s Yibrant tail and the loud hissing of both reptiles. He found .the rattler coiled in a corner of the cage, its head darting back and forth, and watching for a chance to strike its-larger enemy. The kiDg snake was gliding eautio isly nearer with the intention of twining its muscular coils around the rattler and crushing it to death'. The rattlesnake made its spring, but was unsuccessful in his attempt to bury its fangs in the king. Next moment the Tibs of its writh ing body began to crack as the king snake coiled about the rattler and began to contract its own power ful rnucles, In its desperate struggles the rattlesnake knocked tbe door of its box into pieces with a blow of his tail, and both reptiles fell out on the floo-. Burns didn’tcare to take any part in the quarrel. He snmmoned an assis tant, and finally got the victor iuto a hag. The fight had lasted but fifteen minutes. The rattler was dead and the king snake appeared to be un harmed. £ RAD FI ELD’S FEMALE REGULATOR has proven an infallible specific for all derange ments peculiar to the female sex, such as chronic womlj and ovarian dis eases.
