An explosion of a little gas make a mighty big noise.' Fire its loaded with dried peas and China ries are harmless. The fuss made f little oonsequenoe; It Is the wdrk a man does for his party and the way be lives Its principles that tell. That Grand Old Man and indomit able pamphleteer, William Ewart Gladstone, has written another little book. His purpose this time la to op pose woman suffrage, “lest we unwit tingly invite her to trespass the purity, flellcaoy and elevation of her own na ture.” In the minds of many persona who have hitherto idoltxed the latter- day divine William, this threadbare argument will stamp him as a very old man, indeed—a genuine antedi luvian. PaiNca Bismarck, whose physician baa compelled him to make a material reduction in the extent of bis pota tions, lament! the decadence of the liquo|-drinking power of Germans, • and hopes they may not descend to the low level of the English, “who drink nothing but water and tea.” The Phil adelphia Record suggests that this scorn of the English as drinkers will surprise many of them. It would also onish those natives of Damascus i cal! drunken men victims of the Irtish disease." Mv I)kab Mn. Rainky—I am In re ceipt of the marked copy of your Hsuc of the 27th InsC, and note with pleas ure tho correct, elear-eut style of the paper, because It Is nil evidence of the progress and high order of Intelli gence which pervades our sister city, Dawson—not Dawson alone, but the staunch county of Terrell. Well, now, nfter that nice little dose of soft sol der, won’t you nllow me to comment Just n little hit on your article in which you essay to give the Congres sional Convention of tins district par- tlcularfits? So clear and distinct that wince as we may, the exclamation comes: “Rnlney Is a good fellow!” Yet, at the same time, it Is clear that he Is wedded to his idols—and like the ltrnlunlh* of Delhi, enn see no good boyond the gods which Ills linnds has helped to set up. You accuse the com mittee of being swayed by “waves of passion and prejudice." Passion ami prejudice against whopi? Not against Democrats, surely, and not against others, because the words of tho com mittee are couched respectfully, which passion cannot, do; arc couched con servatively, which prejudice cannot do. Neither do the words of the com mittee cnconrngo dUsentlon, rather the reverse. They encourage caution ngalnst. avowed opponents—opponents in Interest, opponents In prinolplennd opponents in fact—who claim the right hy reason of past alllllatlon to control the counulls of Democracy. It will hot do, my dear sir, In say you belong to.tlie rock-ribbed Democ racy, anil swallow ata gulp the teneli- Ings of your Ocnlu confreres, the teachings of your St. I.ouis masters, the touchings of Peck, Post, Daniels ik On. Your Intelllginioe does away with tile necessity of enumerating the monstrosities which have been put forth hy this combination. Yet you will pardon tlm recital of a few cardi nal virtues which are claimed by them nml put forth to the world as equal al most Ih point of virtue to the words of fibly writ. 'For. Instance, the ware house system and suh-treasury'plau of the Ocala platform. Suppose a law lias been passed hy Congress alid is in ell’eot to-day,- the cotton crop of Inst year, under its provisions, Is stored in warehouses In the towns and hamlets of the laud; two-thirds of its value was advanced when stored, the farmers mortgaged I heir farms, their stock nnd everything they had to seouro the pay ment of fhe advnncc. Interest, how ever low, sleeps not; expenses, how ever light, accumulate. Doss In weight Is nil assured fact, and a sale when it takes place is u certain loss to the horny-hnnded farmer. The Republican party Is In power. Imagine, If you enn, tin* army of sup porters which your pet measure will give them, unless you can presume that Democrats will he appointed to III It he fat gjnoes. Need I enlarge the picture, and show' all this for the ben efit of n class of the community—class, because the artisan, the scholar, the student ami tin; outside world are ex cluded from the benefits of your pet mensure, and yet you call this Democ racy. Will you lot me carry you to St. Louis? That grand conclave of celeb rities who proposed to capture this hemisphere by the great, and good proposition to be honest to the Federal pensioners, pensioners who have re- oelved millions of the hard earnings of an Impoverished people. Your good St. Louis people say be honest to those fellows; tlie money paid them was not gold, only greenback; let us give them SO per oent. more as a discount for dif ference in valuation, and it was swal lowed with a whoop. Not a word was Baid about paying the Southern cotton planter, or the Western grain raiser, a discount on the money paid them all these years for their produce, and yet you call tills Dcmooraoy—Iron-ribbed Demooraoy. L well remember the day in the ’Sixties when, in company with some of the truest men that ever drew the breath of life, from Terrell county, we tramped the salt marshes of the Caro lina coast, the hills, the valleys and mountains of Virginia and Maryland, with naught for covering save the blue canopy of heaven, and naught to pro tect them from storms save the worn grey coats and woolen hats of the Con federate soldier. Where are those gal lant fellows now? I have seen their bayonets in the charge dash like light ning in the front. They ocoiipy un known gtavtk on many a hill Bide, on men. Some with their wooden lei ploughed steers; all done what they could, aud thanks to their indomitable pluck the farms of the South are no longer waste. It Is with a full heart that I some times see some of the farmers of Terrell in Albany. Their teams and their own good-selves show that their barn yards teem with plenty. Bu£ the last of thin grand old race Is nearly gone; but not so the sons, the widows, the daughters, the orphans of the old Confeds—they arc here, and you good St. Louis people want them of their hard earnings to pay more pensions to Yankee bummers. Old Confeder ates do not object to tile pnyment of pensions to the old soldiers of the Fed eral army who were In service; but they protest against the army of bum mers now on top. No iron-ribbed Democrat will consent; and Iron- ribbed Democrats do not want to affil iate with men who (lo consent to such an outrage uti what you will nllow me to call common decency ami coiimon honesty. It is agnlnst these outrages that the Executive Committee seek to protect Democrats. If there are men m Terrell county wild objeo* to this line of action on the part of the com mittee, they are not the men 1 used to know In the days lang syne. Neither do I think, Mr. F.dltor, that you can swnllow It. all. We have sent for hand-book of yoltr tit. Louis friends’ platform.
