Is lo be proposed at tho coming State

Messrs. K. P. Howell, Patrick Walsh,
Lewis F. Garrard, and James M. Smith,
of Oglethorpe, inny he nnnictl. This
announcement has caused a sensn'ion
among Democrats who believe that the
tarlIf reform platform of 1888 should
he Indorsed. They say that whatever
the preference of Democrats,ns to Mill
and Cleveland,’or us to silver, there
should be no step backward in tariff
reform. The noinlnntlonof astraight-
out protection ticket, with Mill trim
mings, would he a reversal of the Issue
of the State in 1888.
On Friday last there passed through
the immigration bureau of New York
a well-attired young woman who gave'
her name as Nadesehda Vassiclleff.
The clerk was surprised to learn tlytt
she was familiar with all the princi
pal languages of Europe, and her qopr
versatlon showed her to be a perspn
of education and refinement. She Is a
Russian Jewess and one of the many
thousands of her race who have been
forced to leave their homes in Russia
to seek an asylum in more hospitable
lands. She was born in Moscow, and
educated in 1 St. Petersburg. Much
care and money were expended by her
family to secure a fine education, and
fit her for the vocation of a teacher.
When her education was completed
she returned to Moscow. There her
trials began. First she was forbidden
to tench, and when she remonstrated
against the mandate she rccilved a
call from the chief of police, who or
dered her to leave Russia without
delay. She appealed to the Governor
of the city and was granted a short
reprieve. At its expiration came per
emptory orders to leave the domain of
the Czar. The reshit of a protest was
an Intlmntlon that there were two
ways of leaving the country open to
her—one by way of a train which took
exiles to the frontier, and the other
with a caravan to Siberia. She, of
course, chose the former, nnd departed
in company with 1,600. families, who
Imd the same alternatives to choose
from.
She said the words could not picture
the horror of their Journey tolVarsnw.
For nearly thirty-six hours they stood
like cattle In a crowded ear jvlthout
food or water or sleep. After many
trials, London was reached, from
which point she embarked for New
York.
Tho condition of the peasantry Miss
Vassleliell' describes ns one of fright

Candidate Stevens started the atll-
flnvlt business in the Congressional
campaign ill tliia district, and now
whenever n Third 1’nrtyitc gets cor
nered lie trots out nil affidavit. Col. J.
W. Walters, of this city, was reported
hy the Thomasville News last week as
having irmdo use of a very Indiscreet
assertion over at Isabella court. Mr.
Walters promptly published a card jo
the Hkhai.d repudiating the language
accredited to him, and now the News
eonies back with this affidavit:
Gkoruia—Thomas County.
In person appeared before me, J. L.
Hall, who. on oath, says that he was
present when Mr. Jesse Walters used
wnrds In substance as follows:
“If Mr. Stevens is nominated, Dough
erty county would give a Republican
majority or 1,000.” J. L. IIXi.i..’

Col. Waiters is absent from home at

would feel called upon to take any no
tice of Mr. Halt's affidavit, as It speaks
only In Indefinite “words lu substance.'
Two women from Wyoming nre to
alt in the convention at Minneapolis—
just two—and doubtless the time from
now until that important ocoaslon
arrives will be spent by them In de
termining whnt to wear.
The Republican conventions are as
dumb as oysters on tlie force bill.
Atlanta lias kept but half an eye on
the Baptist convention. The other
half is firmly fixed on tho Atlanta
base ball nine.
Even the pessimistic Third Party
wouldn’t' kick at a soaking ruin
throughout tlie Second Congressional
district about now.
The Democratic party of this coun
try needs a school of polities. Our
party leaders seem to learn nothing
from the school of experience.
Ik J. C. C. Black can’t down Tom
Watson ill tKo Tenth district nobody
can. Tom Watson is no fool, nnd is n
hard limn to down on tlie stump.
Tiik election light is on nnd the first
sliot fired. There were eleven fights
nnd one shooting at a special election
at St. Francis, Ark., on Wednesday.
A relie of the arm of Mary, tlie
Mother of Christ, lias been brought, to'
America. It is now in New York, but
will be taken lo Canada to the church
of Ste. Anne do Bcanpre, on the St.
Lawrence River.
His Holiness, the Pope, authorizes
tlie bringing of the fragment to Amer
ica to increase the faith and devotion
of ail tlie members of the church. To
the purely secular mind there is some-
tiling solemn nnd awe-inspiring in
this gray fragment of a woman who
lived and breathed nineteen centuries
ago.
Crowds of Catholics Imve thronged
to tho church in New Y r ork to obtain a
glimpse of this sacred relic and to
leave a reverential kiss on the ease in
which it is inclosed.
The Olevelnmlltes and JUnites have
already carried their foolish warfare
so far that tlie only hope of Democratic
success next November depends upon
tlie nomination of a third man upon
whom both factions of tlie party can
be united.
Gkobiiia lias been getting tlie fag
end of tlie severe storm that lias swept

damage by heavy rains and floods.
Fur the sake of a heavy rain, we be

floods.
