C. B. Wooten Is no longer a can* didate for Congress. Tills announcement is now positive ly made for the first time, and as usual, with the important political announce ments of the Second Congressional dutriot, it appears first in the IIbhald. On account of bad health, Colonel Wooten was compelled, after formally announcing Ills candidacy for Con gress and entering upon an active can vass of the district, to abandon the canvass. Last week, after being ad vised by Ills physician to go to Hu- wanee Springs for the benefit of Ills health, lie addressed u letter to friends, which letter was published in the Hxkai.d,explaining hie absence from the district and magnanimously ns- i a candidate for tlio House of it an Kxocutlro Committee to serve tor I two yours. - of the Kxecutlve Committee, this W'. He Is perhaps the most universally admired public man in America, and IiIb nomination by the Democrats at the National Conven tion at Chicago is a foregone con clusion. And yet there arc those who igno rantly talk of the “decline of Cleve land's popularity from 1884 to 1888." These pessimists wuuld do well to take n glance at the election returns. In New York Cleveland received 72,811 more votes In 1888 than In 1884; in New Jersey, 28,710 more; In In dlann, 10,028 more; and In Connecticut, 7,721 more. New York gave him 100,- 000 more votes ill 1888 than In 1882, when he was elected Governor of that State by a plurality of 108,000. Al though defeated by the electoral col lege system, his total vote in 1888 was 5,580,242—an increase(of 001,250 over his vote of 1884, and a popular plural ity of 65,534 over llarrison. Ill 1884 his plurality over Rlalne was 28,005 votes. So far from declining, Cleve land’s popularity has Increased with accelerating pnee; nnd there is no more striking proof of this fact than in the enthusiasm with which most of tho States have elected delegates to nominate him nt Chlengo, In spite of tho intrigues of rivals and politicians, I.ick Observatory has lost its Pro fessor. Prof. S. W. Burnham has re signed his position, and it is reported that he will go Kast to accept a more lucrative place. Thkrk are 1,157 millionaires in New York and yet most of the subscribers to the Grant monument fund earn not more than 80 cents per day, and 61.35 for the fund was recently collected by a missionary in nseven-oont boarding house in that city of millionaires. Well, Grant has his monument now, and it won’t do to rub things in too deeply. l'LAY CBOqUI Some young ladies of been anxious to form a and have been looking into the mat ter of cost of racquet, balls, putting a court into shape.and etc. Girls, give it up. Tennis is out of style this season. It has been given the back seat in the fashionable world's preference. Cro quet lias superseded it. its recommendations. Croquet has its recommendations. In the first place, a croquet outfit does not cost as much by a third as a tennis outfit, and in the second place, the croquet ground possesses possibil ities for little gnllnntrles and the in terchange of sweet confidences that the tenuis court, with its constant movement nud rush, never does. Then, too, It permits thu wearing of dainty nnd attractive gowns. The graceful curves of a woman’s contour, the daintiness of a slender hnnd, and the arch of a shapely foot are never seen to such advantage as when a pretty girl plants her No. 2 slipper on a refractory ball to croquet a rival’s or assist a partner’s. And last, a man plays tennis because he likes the gnme. He plays croquet because he likes the girl. Hence its superiority. THE UHOQUKT (IIKI.’S MAKE-UP. The croquet girl will wenr a gown of Iudinn silk or muslin of delicate green, like the first tender shoots of the willow. It will be softly frilled with lace everywhere nnd a-fiutter with ribbons. It will bn accompanied with a picturesquely drooping hat of fine lace, straw, mull, or Inee laden with flowers. And whatever she may neglect she will wear her llnest stock ings and best shoes, her prettiest rings nnd her most persuasive alluring I smile. THE TENNIS OIRL’s MAKE-UP. Tile tennis girl wears n dress of flannel. If she is artistic she will mnko it of blue with n crimson yoke embroidered with the balls nudraquet of the game. Him will have a deep band about the bottom of the skirt em broidered In like manner, and thu sleeves to the elbow will be of crimson. A soft scarf of silk will belt the waist and flutter as she runs. It Is the popular belief that the buz- znrd, which may be seen nny day lazily winging its way in great circles far up through the air, smells the carrion for which It Is continually on the watch. This is an crroncousgbellof, for, In truth, the buzzard has no sense of smell nt all that is worth speaking of. You may easily prove for yourself that that Is true. Catch one alive and hide a piece of carrion from Its sight, but within easy smelling distance. The bird will not be able to find it though it be but a few feet away. But he can see it, strange as it may seem, and see it plainly when hun dreds of feet above it in the air. The buzzard lias the most peculiar mechan ical contrivance for an eyo that it is the good fortune of an animal to have. The eyeball is surrounded by horny plates which move slightly on eaoli other. The muscles at the baok of the eyo nro so arranged that they Oan thrust the center,of the ball of the eye out in front, and the pressure of these horny plateB keeps the whole eye from being pushed out also. Thus the eye assumes a cone-like appearance from tho outside. By relaxing tills pres sure and exerting these muscles in the opposite direction, the front of the eye enn be made flat. By this means the buzzard can, while flying at a great flight, sweep the ground with Ills telescopic eye in search of carrion, and, ns lie approaches the earth, can keep adjusting Ills sight so that he sees the desired objeet plainly, even when it is under ills very bonk. The Republicans have renominated Harrison for President, but, somehow, they can't got up any show of en thusiasm. NEW ADVERTISEMENTS. PROPOSALS Tower, Engines, Boilers, &c.
