was the first paper to reach Albany
with the result of the balldt In the
Ohloago convention this morning.
Don't you know that “tired feeling"
had Its grip on the crowd that went
out of the Democratic Wigwam in
Chicago after nominating Cleveland at
8 dO this morning.
Tna principal business of the South
in both political parties Is to vote. The
Southern vote nominated Harrison at
Minneapolis, and it was the Southern
vote that gave the nomination to
Cleveland at Chicago.
Editob WiitTKH, of the Thomasville
News, is writing long reviews of the
campaign In the Second Congres
sional distrlot and treating the sub
ject as a thing of the past and that
has been finally settled.
Hpkoui.s from Paris to the Ameri
can press say that oholera Is extend
ing In the manufacturing suburbs of
that city. Eight persons died Monday
from the disease at Aubertburg, five
miles north of Paris. It seems as
though the dreadful epldemlo was
slowly but steadily spreading.
Ir Mrs. Whitelaw Reid, wife of the
Republican nominee for Vice Presi
dent, does go to Washington after the
4th of March next, she will be a de
cided acquisition to Washington so
ciety. Mrs. Reid was Miss Elisabeth
Hills, daughter of the California
millionaire, before her marriage. Mr.
Reid was past forty years of age when
he married, and his wife Is consider
ably hla Junior. They have three
bright, sturdy children, who are reared
simply under mild but firm discipline.

Homebody—the II child doesn’t know
who—has been down to Savannah and
was Interviewed by a reporter of the
Press on the situation in the Second
Congressional distrlot. In the “Bocal
News and Comment" column of the
Press, always Interesting, we find the
following i
I was talking to a prominent poli
tician from Albany the other day, and
he spoke very entertainingly of the
condition of affairs In the Second dis
trlot.
“There Is going to be a peck of
trouble In the Seoond distrlot, and
Demoorats In the Btate and outside of
the distrlot may be called upon for ad
vice to unravel the troubles In our
bailtwiok.
“You cannot Imagine how things are
mixed up, and no one can estimate the
amount of trouble there is going to
orop out."
“Well tell me all about It."
“The story Is brief df narration.
You see, Col. Stevens is ‘sweeping
things,’as the boys say. He Iscnptur-
ing all the oounties, and when the
nominating convention goes In session
J t Albany he will have a clear majority.
am sure that even Ben Russell will
admit thla. But here 1s where the
trouble comes in. Stephens, you know,
Isbaokedby the Alliance. Now, the
Alllanoemen In the distrlot are—that
la, a great majority of them are—Third
Party men. Here is
oomes.”
“Ilowf"
“Why, as a matter of fact the Third
•arty is controlling a Democratic con
vention. The President of the Alilanoe
in the district has openly said that the
Alilanoe waf only holding away from
the Third Party temporarily beoauae
of its devotion to Col. Stevens. This
President did not hesitate to tell Ben
Russell that. Third party people are
as thiok In the Seoond as crows at
oornplantlng time, but they are mak
ing no demonstration—and will make
none till they are at perfeot liberty to
show their hand and Stevens has the
nomination.
“Is Col. Stevens a Third Partyltef"
“Not as I understand it. He is the
Alllanoeman’s friend, however, and
are devoted to him. He is a very
»1 gentleman. He la not a poll-
An. He does not go on the stump.
J» does not talk politics muob. He is
a solid oltlaen, though, and, so far as I
know, noons hat a word against him.
“What we don't like, and what I
hope the people of the distrlot wont
stand, is this Third Party oontrolling
the Democratic machinery in the dis
trict. 1 am told that a square kiok Is
to be made in the convention, and that
there will be contests against more
than half of the bounty delegations.
“Yes you oan put. it down that tb
where the hitch
you oan put it downthat there
is going to be a red-hot time when the
convention meets."
A Pretty ■eavr Fish Starr.
Peter Stroxer Is one of the hardest
sort of persons to down when it oomes
to originality In telling fish stories,
anflio fact relating incidents of any
sort.
A few days ago a party of gentlemen
were regaling one another In deOraf-
fenretd A Co.’s store with their own
and other folks’ experiences, and the
fish stories kept getting better and
better. Finally one of the party
seemed to stump the crowd by telling
about a trout whose backbone was as
large as the bone of his tore arm. But
the irrepressible Peter was bound to
have the last say-so.
“Gentlemen,” he said, “that’ll wash,
but this is an occurrence, the truth of
which I oan vouch for. A friend of
mine and myself were fishing in a
pond near here not long age, and my
friend caught a trout, whose else you
can imagine, when I tell you with all
seriousness, that the pond fell five feet
as soon as he was taken from the
water.”
Just then the rest of the crowd had
business on Washington street, and
no more stories were told in opposition
to the above. Peter smiled a sigh, and
turned to fill a prescription that had
just eease in.

Chicago, June 22—11 a. m.
It is said this morning that Steven
son, of Illinois, will be made the nomi
nee for Vice Prealdent instead of Gray.
A morning paper reports that a com
bination has been formed to beat Cleve
land and has more than one-third of
the delegates. Several names are men
tioned on whom the combination may
be effected.
At 11.12 the delegates are coming
into the hall slowly. The weather Is
clear and pleasant.
4 is rumored that the anti-Cleve
land men will make a fight on abro
gating the unit rule in order lo pre-
veut a ballot being reached to-day.
I.oud calls were made for Mills, and
he was conducted to the platform, but
was too ill to speak and had to be car
ried to hla hotel.
Palmer was called to the platform
and made a speech.
The convention was called to order
at 11 fill.
Some of the committees are not ready
to report yet.
The Cleveland men say they are
going to have a ballot to-day If it takes
till midnight.
Wilson, of West Virginia, was elect
ed permanent chairman, and made a
speech, in which he appealed for har
mony, said the tariff and taxation fur
nished the true basis of the political
issue, and denounced the McKinley
bill as the greatest humbug of tho age.
The ouLVention adjourned at 1:45
until 8 o'clock liiis afternoon.
Cnicioo, June 28.
After an all night session of the con
vention, a ballot was finally reaohed
and Cleveland was nominated on the
first ballot at 8:20 this morning.
The ballot stands as follows:
Cleveland 616
Hill 112
Boles : 108
Gorman 86
Stevenson 16
Morrison 8
Carlisle 16
Campbell 2
PaUIson 1
Whitney 1
Russell 1
The greatest exoltement prevailed,
and the Cleveland men went wild
when the result of the ballot was am
nounoed.
Ohio moved that the rules be sus
pended and Cleveland’s nomination be
made by aoelamatlon. Daniels, of Vir
ginia, seoonded the motion and it was
carried, after which the convention
adjourned until 2 o’clock p. m.
AVTKRKOON SKBSION — WHO WILL BX
VIOX l’RKSIDENT?
Chicago—2:12 p. m
The delegates are entering the hall
slowly, and a heavy storm prevails.
The chances now seem to favor the
nomination of Stevenson, of Illinois,
as it is olaimed he can carry his State
for the Democratic ticket.
AtkfiK) the convention was called to
order, apd nominations for Vioe Pres
ident were in order.
Illinois nominated Stevenson, and
was seoonded by New York.
Gray, of Indiana, Roles, of Iowa,
Mitohell, of Wisconsin, and Morse, of
Michigan, have been placed in nomi
nation, and at 4:80 the roll of States Is
being called for the vote.
At 4:48 the first ballot for Vice Pres
ident'was announced, but many States
did not vote apd there was no eleotlon.
The vote stood: Stevenson, 160; Gray,
179. .
In a public school in New York
there are 710 pupils, all of whom but
ten are ot foreign birth and language.
Tbxbb doesn’t seem to have been as
muoh rain in the country above as In
this county, for the Kinobafoonee and
Muokalee creeks show very little signs
of muddying or rising.
