It Vas a Ronser and Harmony Prevailed. W. B. WOOTBN FOR THE SEN ATE AND E. K. JONES BOR THE HOUSE. a. D. rapv.lalHMl far Molilllor Oca era I — CI.Tcl.a4 sad the Bum- cull* Platfaraa ladened With From Thurmlsy'* Krxxixo HSBlLn. The Democratic mass meeting at the Court House to-day was the largest that we have bad in Doughertycounty since the memorable Gordon and Baeon campaign. And the meeting was perhaps the most harmonious and enthusiastic po litical body that ever assembled In the eounty. All seemed to be of one opinion, and very much of that opinion. AtllilOo'olook Judge W. T. Jones, Chairman of the Democratic Bxecti- tive Committee, mounted the stand and called the meeting to order. He stated the object of the meeting to be (1st) to select delegates to the Tenth Senatorial district convention, (3d) to nominate a candidate for the House of Bepresentatlves, and (8d) to elect a new Democratic Executive Committee. Judge Jones then announced that he was ready to entertain a motion for the permanent organization of the convention, and Mr. B. H. Warren was unanimously elected Chairman andH. M. McIntosh requested to act as Secre tary. OAPT. W, B. WOOTXlf FOR Till SKNATK, When the Chairman had given fit ting expression to hla appreciation of the honor of being oalled upon to pre- aide over so large an aiaemblageof the Democrats of Dougherty county, he announced “ready for business,” whereupon Hon. J. W. Walters moved that, Inasmuoh as this was Dougherty’s time, under the rotation aystem, to name the nominee of the Tenth Sena torial dlstriot, Hon. W. E. Wooten be made the choloe of thia convention, and that his name be thus presented to the district convention. The enthusi asts oheerlng that went up from the crowd at the mention of Gapt.Wpoten’s name was so assuring that Mr. Waltera said he would say no more in support of hS motion. The motion was sec onded from every part of the house and was promptly put by the Chair man and declared unanimously ear ned. The motion making Capt. Wooten Dougherty oounty’s choice for the Senate having been unanimously adopted, Mr. Waltera moved that Oapt. Wooten be authorized to name the tour delegates who shall represent this county in the Senatorial conven tion. This motion waa also unani mously adopted. COL. E. R. JONES FOR THE HOUSE. Mr. S. J. Jones, In a few well-ohosen remarks, placed the name of Col. E. B. Jones before the convention for nomi nation for the House of Bepresenta tlves. Cot. Jones’s friends were there In force, and three cheers and a tiger were given him at the first mention of Ills name. As soon as the oheerlng had oeased, Capt. J. T. Hester was reoognlzed by the ohalr ami seconded the nomination of Col. Jones in a very happy little speeoh. There were no other nominations, and, upon motion of Capt. B. Hobbs, Col. Jones was nominated by acclama' tlon, and the vote was a unanimous one. Messrs. S. J. Jones, H. M. McIntosh and J. W. Waltera were appointed a committee to notify Messrs. Wooten and Jones of the action of the oonven tion and to conduct them to the stand. Capt. Wooten was waited on by the committee in one corner of the ball, and, rising in Ills seat, undertook to address the meeting there, but dually yielded to the repeated cries that went up from different parts of the ball ami went to the Judge’s stand. He was very happy in expressing his appre ciation of the honor that imd been con ferred upon him, amt pledged himself to represent the entire people of the district, regardless of any clique or faction, to the best of his ability, and concluded by saying that be would en deavor to so deport liimself as that his fellow-citizens would never have cause to regret the bestowal of this honor upon him. Col. E. B. Jones was next conducted to the stand and made a ringing speech, concluding his remarks witli the assurance to his constituents that it would ever be his aim and ambition to advance the best Interests of his native county. EXECUTIVR COMMITTEE. Judge W. T. Jones was re-elected Chairman of the Deniocratio Execu tive Committee, and was authorized to appoint the other six members of the committee, as was done two years ago. Judge Jones has notified the Herald of his re-appointment of the old mlttee, as follows: Albany—J. W. Walters, H. M. Mc Intosh. East Doogherty—A. W. Cosby, J. A. Johnson. West Dougherty—George Walker, A, B. Jackson. J. D. TOTE FOR SOLICITOR. Capt. W. E. Wooten offered the fol lowing resolution, and the same was unanimously adopted: Resolved, By the Democracy of the county of Doogherty, in mass meeting assembled, that our fellow-oltlzen, Jiio. D. Pope, Esq, be and he It hereby In dorsed for the position of Solicitor- General of the Albanv Jndloial Cir cuit. During his mostefllclent service as Connty Court Solicitor for the past four years he ha* gained for himself an enviable reputation as a prosecut ing oflloer, and has demonstrated, un mistakably, his fitness for the office of Solicitor-General. We present his name to the next Legislature and ear nestly recommend his election. CLEVELAND AND THE DEMOCRATIC PLAT FORM INDORSED. The following, offered by Hon. J. W. Walters, was adopted t Whereas, Our party—the grand old Democratic party of this great conti nent—has, In Its supreme wisdom, se lected for our standard-bearer to carry our flag this fall into the Capitol at Washington, and plant It on the dome to be seen by all nations, that true, that great and noble man, who, In truth and in faot, knows no North, no South, no East or West, but this bound- lesss continent as our country, the Hon. Grover Cleveland, therefore be It Bcsolved, That we, the Democrats of this county, in mass meeting as sembled, do hereby ratify and confirm the selection of our National Conven tion, and the platform of principles ’at Ohio ty Nod all alien efforts of our enemies to adopted at Chicago, and pledge that lace In the Lai this county will place In band of pass class legislation of all kinds. After.the adoption of these resolu tions with a "hurrah for Grover,” the convention adjourned. Tub latest census bulletin shows that of the population of the United States In 1890 the males numbered 83,- 067,880, and the females 80,551,870—an exoess of 1,518,510 of males over the female inhabitants of the oountry. But In some States this disparity between the sexes In numbers Is muoh greater than In others. While the males have Increased In a greater ratio than have the females by 1.64 per cent. In the en tire country since 1880, In Pennsyl vanla they have increased by 3.18 per cent. In New York, in a population of 5,997,858 In 1890, the females out numbered the males 44,067, while In Pennsylvania the males outnumbered the females 74,048 in a total population of 6,358,014—a difference of 118,715 be tween the two States. The chief cause of the abnormal preponderance of males over females in the population of Pennsylvania is in the Importation of foreign labor, whloh manifests itself almost wholly in the foreign born pop ulation of the coal and coke and iron manufacturing regions of the State. Where population Increases naturally no such disparity In numbers between the sexes can exist. MORK ABOUT ALBANY. Vienna! Things Thnt nre Being Said Abenl Her. FURNITURE For This Week Only. A great many good things are being said about Albany lately; about the enterprise and push of her oltizens about the bealthfulness of her looallty, and her hospitality and sociability. But It remains for one of the popu lar traveling men who make period! cal visits to Albany to say the pleas antest thing that the Herald has yet heard of. The gentleman In question travels all through the Southern States, and there probably Is not a town of any considerable size that he has not v!s< Ited or knows as muoh about as though lie had. He made his regular stop in Albany just recently, and in talking with n Herald reporter, said: “Do you know that Albany is the coming city of this part of Georgia? You all boast about it, I know, though you don’t more tlinn half believe it. But I tell you it is so. Yon have stores here that a city of fifty thousand inhabi tants might be proud of, and the mer chants all seem to be thoroughly im bued with that spirit of progression and pusli that keeps them abreast with the times and nlive to their interests mid those of the city.” “But wc are not booming the town,” said the Herald scribe. “No, you are not.anil that is the best feature of It. The town doesn’t need any booming—it grows of Itself, and henoe its growth is substantial. Money invested in real estate in Albany is bound to bring tv good rate of interest at all timeB. “There is one thing, though, that you all fail to appreciate, and that is the fact that with tlie good, steady business of the oity, you might just as well have your slinre of the influx of winter visitors to the South as not. “Very few people from the North go down into Florida to spend the win ter. They spend a few weeks visiting different points in that State, but they aome baok into this belt of country to stay. “Now you might prove a successful rival of Thomasville just as well as not, if you tried. And I tell you, those Northern visitors bring a heap of money into a place. But I’ve lots of friends in Thomasville, and I wouldn’t oare to have them know I said you could catob a share of their visitors,” and we promised not to tell of it. TURKISH BATHS! ELECTRIC BATHS!
