The political situation in the Second
Congressional district has never been
more grave, perhaps, from a Demo
cratic party standpoint, than it is to-
day. / ,., ( .
What is the situation?
What.is it that.gives it snch gravity
in comparison with the campaigns that
we have had in tlio district, during the
last decadeT
For the first time within the politi
cal history of the district we have four
separatq and distinct political parties,
vii: the Democratic, the Republican,
tho Alliance and the Third or People’s
Party.
The Alliance party to whloh refer',
once is here made,.Is not the original
or genuine Farmers’ Alliance, but the
District Alliance .that was organized
for political purposes at Thomasvllle
on the 21st of Janunry, and which sub
sequently brought, out a candidate for
Congress on tho 28th of Mnroh nt
Cuthbert.
If the District Alliance, as organ
ized in this Congressional district for
political purposes, is not a political
party of and unto Itself, then what
Is It?
Of these four parties, which is the
Southern white man’s party?
To this there can be but one answer
-tlio Democratic party of our fathers.
This being true—and who can,dis
pute it?—the Democratic party’of the
Heoond Congressional distriot has
tlireo enemies to contend with. Here
tofore It has had but one common ene
my, tho Republican party, but this
year it is confronted by three.
And the most formidable and dan
gerous of these enemies is tile District
Alliance political machine. It
dbubly dangerous because it claims to
be Democratic and essnyp to forestall
and pre-empt the action of the duly
organized and legitimate Demooratio
Rarly.
What is the District Alliance?
We are told by those who belong to
the order nnd ought to know, that the
Distriot Alliance Is a separate and in
dependent organization from the orig
inal or legitimate order known ns tho
Farmers’ Alliance—that it was organ
(zed 111 this distriot for political pur
poses only, nnd that there is no such
thing as n District Alliance, such ns
wo hnve here In the Seoond district,
provided for in the constitution .and
by-laws of tho Farmers’ Alliance
propor.
And what tins this Distriot Alllanco
done?
What Is tlio matter with the District
Alllnnae nnd tho Democratic party?
Why, tho District Alllnnoo called a
meeting of delegates .from nil the
counties of the district, In midwinter,
without consulting or waiting for tlie
usual action of the Democratic party
orgnnizntlon, which lias stood and
been recognized by all loyal Demo
crats from time immemorial, and nom
inated n candidate for Congress ; nnd,
in onrrylng out the purposes of that
nomination, their policy is to forestall
the notion of tho Democratic party
and foroe their candidate upon the
people nnd the Democratic party of
the district.
And what of this Distriot Alliance
candidate?
AVho Is ho and what is lie?
. What of his auspioeB, or what is
there about the man himself to entitle
him to pre-emption over tho choice of
tlie Democratic party of the distriot as
duly constituted?
O. B. Stevens is Ills name, and his
home is in Dawson, Terrell county.
Our purpose is not to abuse him or
to Indulge in any petty reflections
upon his character ns a man, Tho
IIkhald will not resort to personal
abuse, vituperation and slander to
carry its point in politics, even in be-
half of the grand old Democratic
party; but we do say that Mr. Stevens
was not, in our humble opinion, de
signed by nature for a Congressman.
As the successor to such men as Win.
K. Smith and Henry G. Turner he
would dwindle into utter insignift
entire ns the representative of this dis
triot In Congress. And by this we
mean no reflection whatever upon the
man’s integrity or character. If it
were a horse trader, a supply mer
chant or n county commissioner that
we were called upon to elect wo would
have no objection to urge against can
didate Stevens; but we do insist that
he does' not appear to have been born
or specially designed for Congres
sional honors. He doesn’t even dare
appear upon the hustings of the dis
trict as the exponent of the party and
principles he olaims to represent, much
less meet his competitors in Joint de
bate. What sort of showing would
suoh a man have in Congress? What
sort of defense could he make of our
section and people when they are as
sailed and traduced by our political
enemies? ,
We intend nb reflections upon Mr.
Stevens as a man, but we do say that
this distriot deserves, and the people
owe it to themselves and the State, to
elect an abler and better equipped
man to represent them in Congress.
Of such there are a hundred avail
able men in the district.
And we believe that the people of
t’
le district will yet riwVb - tbi
esty and unite upon one of them as
their representative -in the next Con
gress.
Democrats of the Second distriot, let
us stand to our colors! The 'Alllance
political machine that has sought ,to
forestall the action of the recognized,
time-honored Democratic party, is nof
all-powerful in' the district, an<) we
can whip the fight that has been forced
upon ps. The fight that we must make
Is not upon the. Alliance and, Alliance-
men proper* but upon the Distriot Al
liance political machine. There are
thousands of good Alliancemen who
are loyal Democrats and will stand
with the tfue Democracy when the
issue Is brought to the final test. To
all such add to the loyal, Simon-pnVe
Dempcra.ts of the district generally We
appeal. Mr. Stevens may be a good
Allianccman nnd a good secret (ma
chine politician, blit he is not the man
to be chosen by the Democrats of the
Second district to represent them in
Congress.
Hon. Ben E, Russell is now the only
avowed straight Democratic candidate
as ugalnst Mr. Stevens, the Allianoe
machine candidate, nnd as between
the two men we call upon all true
Democrats and patriotic citizens to
rally to the support of the brilliant
and noble Russell.
