The IIEhalU prints on its fth page to-day a letter from Hon. O. B. Stev ens which will be read with Interest throughout the Second Congressional district. in view of the fact that Mr, Stevens has been the Alliance candidate for Congress In this district, his letter is of especial interest and significance. It breathes the spirit of true Democ racy, and appeals in strong and most convincing terms to those who sup ported Mr. Stevens in his candidacy to stand by the Democratic party anil make their fight for reform inside the Democratfc party organization. “For,” says lie, “to that party we must after all look for relief from our grievances anil deliverance from tpe burdens tlmt oppress our people.” These are true words fitly spoken. There Is but one sentence In Mr. Stevens’letter to which the IIebai.d, from the standpoint of those who op posed him in his candidacy, would tako the IcaBt exception, and in refer ring to It here we desire to do so more in the way of nil explanation than in a spirit of criticism. We al lude to that part of the letter In which It is said that the past canvass was “purely and simply the farmers’ fight against nil other trndes nml profess ions not th full sympathy with their views and purposes for reform.” This may be true; but If It Is, It Is nlso true that the fight was invited nnd precipi tated by the farmers themselves by the organization of a District Alliance for political purposes and bringing out n candidate of their own faith and order, and upon a platform of principles that had been promulgated by the Farmers’ Alliance in advance of any action upon the part of the Democratic party upon the questions or issues involved. But Mr. Stevens’ letter is, in Its en tirety, so timely and thoroughly Demo cratic—so manly and patriotic as com ing from one who has grncefully yield ed to the will of the political party to which, after all, he says wo must “look for relief from our grievances nnd tie liveranoe from the burdens that op press our people,” that the Herald would commend it rather than criti die it. Mr. Stevens isdoing what he can to preserve the unity of the Demo, oratic party, and the Herald Is glad to be tnado the medium of carrying his menage of party loyalty to the people of the Second Congressional district. WIGHT&G0., 211 WASHINGTON ST., ALBANY, St, GENERAL Slnoo Editor Winter, of theThomas- vtlle News, retired from the Held of ac tive journalism, there are perhaps not more than two newspaper men in Georgia whose wealth runs up into the hundreds of thousands; nnd, if the truth were told, It would have to be said that the great majority of them And it hard to keep their paper bills paid and to meet the weekly payroll. But the true newspaper man never complains, and knows that he is expec ted to boom the town and keep the bright aide out whether his own bus iness is prosperous or his heart within haa reason to be glad and oheerful or not. lie Is acoustomed to sawl ng wood in hla own back yard, so to speak, and holding a light without by which the world may see and know the advanta ges that hit town has over all competi tors nnd the excellencies of his fellow- oitizens over thoso of any other town on the faoe of the globe. He Is expec ted to hold the light so It will shine upon the bright aide of his neighbor and ills fellow-townsman’s business, too, and oast a shadow over the things that would look hotter unBeen. Blit we are about to digress. It is about the newspaper man’s kinsfolk that we started to write. Newspapermen, strange as it may nppear to some, come into the world like unto other men, and are generally blessed with the usual quota of klns- people—relations rioh and poor, good, bad and Indifferent. But he may have a thousand, extend ing through all the degress of consan guinity from brother nnd uncle out to tlfth cousin, nnd perhaps not more than one out of every hundred will bo con siderate enough to subscribe for his paper nnd pny him for it. The other ninety-nine will think he ought to send it to them in n complimentary way. “Why don’t yon send me your paper! asks or writes uncle or oounsln So-and- 80. “I would like so much to have it.” Indeed! And yet it has perhaps never ocourred to this dear relation of the impeounious editor that he ought to subsoribe and pay for the paper. In the aggregate the paid subscriptions of all the well meaning and perhaps admiring kinspeople of the average coun try editor would be enough to make him feel glad that he had been born; while to send his paper out free to them would be a tax upon him that he 1b unable to bear, and that he ought not to be expected to bear apy more than the dealer in any commodity should be expeoted to supply his rela tions with it free of charge.
