ALBANY WEEKLY HERALD: SATURDAY SEPTEMBER io, UJ92.
OuRtimo Mortuary Cnntuitin.
The Guatuso Indians of Central
America live in considerable num
bers in a single hut and the village
visited comprised about fifteen huts.
The dead are buried in the habita
tions, and the earth covering the
graves settles until it is about a foot
below the surface of the floor. As
time goes on the graves become less
distinct, and Anally they are com
pletely obliterated. When a person
dies the relatives wail aloud, crying,
•‘I am distressed."
When a warrior is buried bis body
is provided with certain feathers of
two currnssows, a bunch being
placed in each hand, and for some
4 time after death cacao is placed upon
the grave, in order that the departed
warrior may be supplied with drink.

“wished to pass with his disciples as
a person transfigured in a supernat
ural light, and that the credulity of
his followers saw the moon, or tho
moon’s light, descend upon him,
his garments and replenish
“That veneration for the moon
which still forms a national or ratfaor
religious characteristic of the Mo
hammedans may perhaps have its
foundation in the elder superstition
'or pagan idolatry of the Arabs.”—
