It is an old Baying that “rats desert n sinking ship,” but it is a most sing ular fact that they do not wait until n boat or barge is sinking until tney de sert it. They appear to be apprised of the danger sov.rnl hours before any aei'IdentsKiocurs to the vessel. One oasc that came under my observation was when I was piloting a towboat in the lower Mississippi. We were oom- ing up stream late one evening when I noticed a horde of rats coming off one of the barges we had in tow. I told some of the members of the Grew tliat wo would have bad luck. We went ahead, and just before daylight the burge from which the rats hud tied struck a rock and sunk. No damage was done to any other part of the shipping. The same phenomenon oc curred just before the fntnl lire of the steamer Oliver Belrne. On the last day of tlie boat’s career, about two hours before the lire, a drove of rats were seen to run astern over the lower deck and Jump overboard. HI1II0I1’. Iton.uuipiiou cure.
