President Harrison’s last annual

The President holds to Republican
principles and endeavors to show that
the natural growth of the country
during the past thirty years has been
due entirely to the protective tariff of
the Republican party, as if such a
growth were not according to natural
circumstances nnd inevitable from the
nature of the people, tariff or no tariff.

few light sarcasms regarding wliat Is

More noticeable than all Is Ills force

It is a fact, very much to bo regret

nf Georgia, a State noted among those
of the entire union as well ns In the

should be some provision which would

Eight years ago Maurice Lenoir
dWelt in a garret, earning his bread
by copying pictures, nourishing his
soul with dreams of a great classic
canvas of bis own. Needless to re
count tlie disillusions, privations, re
buffs or tho nervous reactions of the
days when ho received a few francs.
The unrelieved pressuro of poverty,
the unremitting blows of ill luck-
tap, tap, like a paver's mallet—he-
camo unbearable. The thin blood of
semistarvution mounted to his head,
creating visions of suicido.
One evening ho bought poison.
Re entering his room something
brushed past his feet. Ho lighted a
candle and began to writo a few lines,
merely to sa vo trouble at tho inquest.
Suddenly there sprung upon tho ta
ble a little yellow kitten. It rubbed
caressingly against his face. Evi
dently a waif—one of the surplus
ninefold lives of nobody’s cat, it
was thin and furnished, its wot fur
frayed by tlie jaws of some dog.
•'One may lie tired of life,” said
Maurice, “lint ouo does not leave a
guest hungry I"
With bread and milk, all ho had,
ho fed the kitten, then warmed it
within the breast of his coot, where
it caressed with its tongue tho linnd
thnt hold it, then purred itself to
sleep.
Maurice reflected: “Suicide is the
refuge of one who hns iu> longer
hopes, ties of affection or responsi
bilities. In receiving this kitten I
have assumed a duty. To place this
little creature for warmth upon my
heart and then turn that warmth to
ice would lie a betrayal. At least I
will iivo until tomorrow.”
In the morning the littlo cat ap
peared so pretty Maurice painted nnd
was able to soli its portrait. Another
was ordered nnd another.
M. Lenoir’s pussies became the
fashion. He deferred his dream of
a classic canvas and painted, only
cats In all postures and colors—yel
low, black, white, gray and tabby.
Ho studied ents; he divined under
their mask of drowsiness or caprice
tho subtlo charm and' wisdom adored
in old Egypt.
Tiio yellow.kitton ..that saved liis
lifo also made Ills fortuno. And M.
Lenoir proved not ungrateful; the
yollow cat, now patriarch of a tribe,
has his cushion aud his cup in tho
ntelior, nnd wears a golden collar in
scribed “To Mv Benefactor.”
Tho election for nounty oflloers Is
now less than a month oil', anil the
llrst formal announcement of a candi
date Is made in to-day’s Hkrai.d.
Mr. F. G. Edwards, tho present
faithful and cltlolent Sheriff of the
oounty, announces fur re-election.
Mr. Edwnrds hns held the ollleo of
Sheriff of Dougherty comity uncon
tented for severnl consecutive terms,
and the indications nre thnt he will
again be re-elected without opposltlun.
The fnot thnt Mr. Edwards hns held
Ills ollice without scramblu or contest
for ten or twelve years past attests his
efllolenoy ns an ofllcer nnd his popu
larity with the people. The oftloe of
Sheriff of Dougherty county is one to
be desired, but who oould promise to
All It with more faithfulness and
fidelity than Felix Edwnrds has? And
who Is there to enter the lists ngnlnst
him with any chance of success? If
there is any threatened opposition to
Mr. Edwards’ re-eleotion the Hkuai.iI
lias not heard of It, and the probability
is that he will again have a clear Held.
But tlie formal announcement of
Mr. Edwnrds opens the couqty politi
cal campaign, ami other announce
ments are now in order.
Let those who are “in the race" for
any county oflioe say so. Tlie timo
for formal announcements of candi
dates for oounty oflioes has fully ar
rived.
