Verily, it looks very mubli ns if tbe
pension burden were anchored upon
this country for a century more at
least. Tlie above statement gives some
idea of the time oyer wbloti these ex
penditures will extend, and while it is
true that, after some years, they will,
in the nature of things, begin to grow
less and less, just at present the ad
ditions to the list, under recent pen
sion enactments, are increasing the
burden by several million dollars per
month.
Tlie lato X’resideht Garfield, while a
member of Congress, onoc said that, in
his opinion, tbe pension charge would
never be greater than |8O,(KJO,O0O a
year. Already it is more than five
times that amount, and it is growing
beautifully larger every day.
The revision and purification of the
pension lists is an Imperative duty of
the National legislators. Only bucIi
soldiers as were disabled while in ser
vice, and widows who were married
before or during tlie war should lie
placed on the list, of pension benefici
aries. Such a revision would purify
the lists, and bring them within rea

The Picture efu Fortune.
From tlm Columbus Knriulm -Stiii.
The -iv.e of Mr. Gould’s fortune has
been piotured in all sorts of ways, but
perhaps the most graphic description
of all is that of a London clergyman,
who told his congregation that if the
late millionaire’s money was in .five-
pound notes they would' titrettiji froul
London to Moscow. Ot if it were in
sovereigns tliey would make a column
seventy-three miles high. Tho queer
est calculation of all ohanged the fort
une intq shillings, and' the clergyman
showed that it would take nearly 210
years, working day and night, to give
nwny one shilling to each person, at
so very easily adjusted that any one can
put them on the body with that fucillty
with wliieh an ordinary night shirt is
placed. Women who may he averse to
adopting clothes which may outwardly
appear manlike may find in health a
goal well worth contesting, and In cov
ering themselves with tlmt stylo of gar
ment whloh is thoroughly sensible.
The composition of the nightgown is a
matter of teste. Canton flahnef, linen
and woojen goods stand at'the head of
the lists after tliuse'come the silks. One,
however, wliieh deserves special atten
tion and which is equally suited for both
sexes is tho real china Bilk, This last Is
the best, but cannot bo procured nt
prices within ordinary range Of purse.

a necessary protection, but. a .comfort
able and an enduring garment.
■ Tlie matter of bed clothing is another
tiling deserving of thought, comprising
that same relation to tho body which
tho outer clothing should hold. A fpw
simple rules should cover the entire
ground, and they aro comprised in four
homely precepts: Use a hair or husk
mattress, cover this mattress with a
blanket, cover tho blanket with a felieot;
