HI8 PREDICAMENT.
1 Young Hun (Vu In. PMk of Trouble
Through Mo Van It of His Own.
There is a certain young man in
Chicago whose natural propensity
for being agreeable has sometimes
placed him in embarrassing posi
tions. Ho has not quite recovered
from his latest shock.
Two weeks ago he decided to ac
cept an invitation to a certain club
reception. A young lady from the
far South Side was to accompany
him.
That ovoning whon ho called at
her father’s door tho young lady was
indisposed. A female cousin hap
pened to lie spending tho ovening at
the house, and being an old friend
the young man Was ushered mto tho
family sitting room nnd introduced
to tho cousin, whom ho had never
seen. Naturally enough ho didn’t
catch her name on presentation, and
naturally enough, too, ho proposed
that she go with him to the recep
tion.
Five minutes after tho introduc
tion sho withdrew to got ready.
When sho came out prepared to keep
out tho cold, sho seemed only an ani
mated bundle of wraps.
It was tills animated hundie which
a fow moments later retired to tlie
club dressing room set nsido for
ladies. Sho came out metamorphosed
beyond all hopo of identification at
the end of 10 minutes. Introductions
to throe or four other ladies had in
the meantime tended to still further
bewilder the young man, and lie
stood with n cold, dummy sweat on
his thoughtful brow.
What a situation 1 Tlie escort of a
youpg lady whoso name he couldn’t
call and wlioke face ho couldn’t ro-
memborl And there wore linlf a
hundred of faces about tho rooms.
Twico in tho course of tho ovening
ho thought ho had found tho young
lady . Each timo lie spoke guardedly
about her "sick cousin," nnd each
timo tho young lady gave him a
scared look, aB if sho doubted his
sanity.
It wns not sho.
Tlie evening dragged on somoliow.
He thought Several times of running
away somewhere—auywhere — and
never being heal'd of more. TI1011 a
happy thought struck him. It gave
him anew hope of llfo,
Peoplo began to go homo after a
time. Tho crowd thinned, and the
young man watched hopefully.
Six women wore left—five—four

Then tlio other young man took
tho arm of tho tall young woman
who was smiling so graciously about
her, loaving a sohor faced, demure
little woman buttoning her loft hand

thankfulness in his heart, tho first

Porson handed tho book to tho boy,
who, pretending to return it, substi

Observing tho class to laugh, tho
master saul: "Poraon, you soom to

Poraon hesitated.

Falmouth lays claim to tho weird

out there says that whon they were
constructing tho Maine CentriU ex
tension . through Falmouth in 1855
the contractor set his men at work
digging a well. Down nnd down they
dug, but never a sign of water. The
men expostulated, but tho contractor
said; "Never you mind the water.
You dig tlie well good and deep, nnd
I'll look eut for tho rest” Therefore
when the contractor decided that his
well was deep enough ho sot a crow
at work and filled tho dry hole brim
ming full of Presumpscot water; Since
then there lias always been water to
spare in that well. Through droughts
that have soaped the veins of neigh
