hut in tlie elura-iter of the people. From
personal innervation, I am inclined to
the belief that the Amerioan people pos
sess the elements of natioual greatness-

in a high degree. The test of loftiness
of oharaoter is to possess boundless
power without abusing it.
Wealth is power,
suoh vast aoonmnlations of wealth in
private hands as in America with bo lit
tle attendant evil felt by society? i
have seen countries where the rloh op
press the poor and the poor onrse the
rich. There 'money is the root of ail
evil.' The reverse seems ,o be the case
in America. Here the rloh' use the am
ple means at their disposal for the bent
eflt of the people, and the people have
good reason to bless the noh.”

Lord Roberts adds that h&makes this

A Midnight Alarm.
From Friday's Dally HCrald.
The fire department was called out
last night a few minutes after 12
o’olook, and made a quick ran to Carter
& Woolfolk's warehouse. It was
found, on their arrival, however, that
their services were not required. The
watchman at the warehouse, becoraiug
Chilled daring tho night, had kindled a
roaring fire In the oflloe stove, and a
nnmber of sparks flying from the
chimney had oaused some passerby to
conclude that tho services of the de.
partment were demanded, hence the
alarm. Last night was not a particu
larly desirable occasion for the firemen
to leave their warm, dry beds for a run
to a fake flro.
