Dr. T. O. JefforrtH, of

The oantaloupe crop in thi* region is
now oaming in rapidly. Up to the lat

these were mndo up by two or more
growers consolidating their pickings ;

earnest and ear load shipment. will now

don't like to toll, for pnblleathvi, what
they are getting for their cantaloupes.

Sweet Home" announced the last
dance, and as the notes of this
sweet tune reverberated throughout the

each hsppy heart, for the dancers were
sorry to leave the scene of such genuine
pleasures. It will be gratifying to the
young people to learn that the Summer

Tho entertainment given under au

Sandy school room of tho Synngogue last
night was a grand snocess. The pro
gram was made np of vocal and instru

best talent of Albany on each of these
linos was well represented. Every
number was a good oue, and those who
rendered the music and reoifatlons all
had to reapond to enoorcs. There was
no ozoeptlon. Wo can therefore make
no comparisons nor draw distinctions
with special mention of any particular
individual who figured on the program.
It was altogether a most delightful en

went away saying only nice things

Moiltua* 8*11 Players Weot Down Under
Score ol II to 2.
From Uat Friday’! Herald.
Nine gentlemanly baseball players
from Montezuma went down in defeat
yesterday afternoon at the Academy
grounds before the same number of bard
hitters and swift rnnners who repre
sented this olty on the diamond. Tbe
score was 11 to 2.
The looalo fairly earned their viottry,
for they played a hotter game than their
opponents at every point. E. R. Clark
was in the box for the homo team, and
he pitohed an effective gams. He was
relieved at the last, for one inning each,
by John Forrester, of Lee county, aud
McAfee, of Smithville, who also suc
ceeded in holding down the visitors so
that they oonld do nothing. Tho Al
banians playod a clean gnmo in the field,
few errors being olmrged against them,
while the Montezuuiuns mude a much
poorer showing in this respect.
Tlie game was witnessed by quite a
large crowd, and tho good points were
lustily cheered. True to the spirit that
lias always animated Albany "fans,"
the visitors were as freely applanded us
tlie homo players. It was a good con
test, and has whotted the local appetite
for “some more of the same,” which
will in all probability be provided iu
duo time. The game was umpired ill
an impartial manner by Mr. J. W. Os
born.

Peculiar Disease Mas Appeared In Lee County
Farmers are Alarmed.
Leesburg, Ga., July 5.—(Special.)—
Yonr correspondent noticed today iu a
field of ootton nenr Leesbnrg something
so pecaliar that ho took the pains to go
to other fields aud investigate. Tbe
stalk that attracted attention was about
knee high, ami this morning as vigor
ous and as healthy as coaid be wished.
When noticed at dinner, the two
blooms were not faded and the squares
were still fresh, but tho leaves were as
parched as if they had been dried in a
stove. Aroand it were other stalks and
aftor a trip it was apparent that the dis
ease was becoming general.
Some farmers to whom this was told
say it is black root, but it seems to be an
entirely new disease, us black root will
not oauae a stalk to die inside of six
hours, when it is vigorous at breakfast
time. If the thing continues the pros-
peots fade away on a cotton crop.
The officers today arrested a man on a
wheel, supposed to be a forger from Sa

no references to prove his innocence.
