$600,000,000 IS
LOSS TO FARMERS.
This Has Been Another
Day of Intense Heat in
the Drougth Afflicted
Regions of the West.
Only Light Showers
Have Fallen Over Small
Area.
Chicago, July 24.—This is another
day of inteuse heat in the corn belt,
with only scattering showers. Last
night most of the section aftlicted with
dronth was as dry as tinder. The dis*
patches report a light rain in Nebraska,
but in only a small portion of the state.
The rains are not general.
The damage to crops is increasing,
and estimates based on normal crops
with existing prices make the losses so
far sustained in the West aggregate at.
least $000,000,000.
HELD FOR BURGLARY.
Young Man Found In Box Car at the Cen
tral Depot.
Officer Kemp responded to a telephone
police cull ‘from the Central railroad
freight depot yesterday and found that
the cause oi' the call was the discovery
of a man in one of the loaded brx oars
that had just come iu from Atlanta.
Several of the railroad employes wore
guardiug the car to prevent the escape
of the mau, and when Officer Kemp
opened the car it was completely sur
rounded.
The man was placed under arrest by
Officer Kemp without any difficulty.
He was a young raau about. 18 years old
and gave his name as Charlie Byrd, and
he says that he is from Thomasville,
Me. He says that,he curae to this
country to get a job packing peaches.
An investigation disclosed the fact
that Charlie had stolen some other
things than the ride on the car. He had
broken int-o a case of shoes and stolen
two pairs, one of which he had on, A
warrant was sworn ont against Byrd,
charging him with burglary.
Byrd evidently got in the car in At
lanta, for he was almost frautically
thirsty when he was arrested. He
knew nothing of any stations this side
of Atlanta.
Byrd’s story is evidently a fake about
coming from Thomasville, Me., for there
is no snch place as that in Maine.

Guards Olve Up Proposed Trip—Will
Money to Discharge Indebtedness.
The memners of the Albany Guards
who have contemplated a trip to the
Buffalo exposition before the close of
that big show have abandoned the pro
posed trip. That is, they will not go as
a military organization, though several
individuals .who would have been mem
bers of the party had the original plans
not fallen through, will probably take
the trip independently.
The “Buffalo fond” up to date
amounts to about $200. It was decided
by those who have been active iu rais
ing this money that it was no more than
a “drop in the bnoket” compared with
the amount that would be needed to de
fray the expenses of the trip.
At a meeting of those who have raised
the fund, held at the Guards’ armory
last night, it was decided to give np the
idea of the trip and devote the money
in hand to the needs of the two
companies. There are several debts
hanging over their heads, and
these will be discharged
once. The balance of the money will
be employed in placing a telephone sys
tem on the new rifle range and making
other improvements. The companies
have appropriated a hundred dollars for
making further improvements on the
range, and it will be made up-to-date
in every respect. These improvements
will be made at once.
