H011. W. U. Brantley will not be a
candidate for governor. Ho haa set at
rest nil rumors regarding his proposed
candidacy by lsanslng a written state
ment in which he declines to run for
governor, and at the same time makos a
powerful plea for a Smith Georgia man[
Tho statement is ns follows:
•‘I am not a candidate for governor,
and will not be. X woald like very
much to see a governor elected from onr
end of the state, but sitnuled ns I am,
tho real inducement to me to consider
ut all, tho question of becoming a can
didate, would be on tho idea of looating
the governor In Sontli Georgia. My
name, however, is bat one of several
from Sontli Georgia, suggested for the
office, so that this indnoemont docs not
Beem to exist, und no dnty appears to
rest upon me in this regard to become a
candidate. I do not believe in section
alism, nor do I think any man should
bo elected governor who would bo soc-
tionnl in administering the dntlns of
that high oDloe; hut, beonnse I am op
posed to sectionalism, 1 am in favor of
a South Georgia candidate, for I do not
believe that any worse form of section
alism conld exist than that which, for
so many long years, hns prohibited at
all times one great portion of this state
from furnishing a governor. So far
from favuriug sectionalism, I am so op
posed to it that I wunt to see it wiped
ont forever, and I know of no better
way to wipe it ont than for the balance
of the state now and then to unite with
us in selecting a governor from Sonth
Georgia. The sentiment against the
sectionalism tlmt has bo long operated
against ns is not conilned alone to Sonth
Georgia, but exists in growing strength
in North and Middle Georgia, and
sooner or later that whioh is so jnstlv
duo us in tlxis particular will bo accorded
to us.
"In announcing that I. will not be a
candidate I want to say farther, 'bat I
am influenced to do so not alone be-
oanse I discorn no duty calling me to
such a candidacy, hot because bo many
of my frienas in tho Kloventh congres
sional distrlot have' manilested to me
their belief that my greatest Held of use
fulness at thiB time is in the position I
now hold, and have asked me not to
abandon It in order to ran for governor.
The evldenoe of esteem and confidence
that have aoaomponied these requests
establish their sincerity beyond all
question and make them a law nnto me.
The .inoere friendship thns shown le
more gratifying to me than 1 ean ex
press and move* mb to a senoe of appro
elation too deep to deaortbe.
“I want to say, too, that the flattering
mention of my name for governor, the
cordial reception it has reoiered and the
many voluntary offers of snpport that
hame oome to me from all over Georgia
have each and all been deeply gratify
ing to me, and while for the reasons al
ready given I oannot enter the race for
governor, I oan draw from these testi
monials of esteem and good will inspi
ration and enoonragemeht for more and
better work in my present field, not
only on behalf of my immediate con
stituents, bat as well on behalf of onr 1
entire state, of whioh there is no more
loyal part than Sonth Georgia.”

WORKING DAY AND NIGHT.
New Artestsu Well Will be Completed Eerller
Then Wee Contempleted.
From Saturday's Daily Herald.
The oity’e new artesian well will be
completed earlier than was contem
plated a week ago. Several days ago It
was decided, after a consultation be
tween members of OonnoU and Mr. E.
F. Joyce, who has the contraot for sink
ing the well, to pnt a double force of
men to work so that the contraot might
be completed at- as early a date as possi
ble.
Accordingly, for several nights past
tho big drill has been kept going down
ward, and satisfactory progress has been
made. One force works all day and an
other throughout the night. Eleotrlc
lamps havo been placed on tho derrick
so that the drillers may have plenty of
light at nil times, and the now arrange
ment will ennse-the well to be completed
mnoh earlier than ‘conld otherwise be
the case.
The well has been earned to a depth
of nearly 450 feet. F6r some time the
drill lias been penetrating a quicksand
bed. The thickness of this stratum is
about 150 feet, and its passage Is always
a trying period In the boring of artesian
wells. With the quicksand disposed of,
the work will proceod rapidly and
smoothly, and with a day and night
force working, tho well will soon be
completed.

Albany and Moultrie orossod bats yes
terday afternoon at the ball park In one
of the prettiest gnmos of the season, the
game being won by tho home team
easily by a score of 0 to 5,
Some three weeks ago the Albany
team wont to Monltrio and suffered do-
feat at the hands of that team. Since
tlmt time the members of the home
teum have been more than anxious to
have the opportunity to even up with
Moultrie's sphere-ohnses. When Iho
gamo was called yesterday afternoon,
the Albany men faced their opponents’
twirler with the determination to win
that game, and the same spirit war evi
denced In tho Sold when tho Albany
boys began taking In the balls hot from
the bats of tho Moaltrieltos.
Tlio game was umpired by Mr. T. W.
Ventulott, and, after some delay, he
called for the teams to “play hall.” Al
bany was at the hat, Monltric taking
the Hold. The Albany boys did not suc
ceed in solving the dollvery of Humphry,
Moultrie's Btar pltoher, during tho first
tuning, and tho side was retired without
a ran being entered np to their oredit.
But if Humphry’s ^delivery puzzled
the home boys, Ruohstard Jmoro than
evened tilings up. for tho visitors, for
they oould not tonoh his deceptive
curves. Moultrie went ont without
sooting, aud the large orowd whioh wit
nessed the game oheered the home team
widely.
In the second inning nettbor side was
able to score, and when Albany soured
two rnns on Olark's safe hit to left in
the third, the orowd went wild with
enthnBlasm. Moultrie enooeeded In
■ending one man across the plate In the
third, making the eoore stand at the in-
teresting figures of 2 to 1 in favor of the
home team.
In the fourth inning neither side
soored, bnt in the fifth inning Albany
"Got onto” that "crack pltoher,” Hum
phry, and batted him rat of the box.
Two single*, a long two-bagger from
Jones’s bat and four costly errors of the
visitors sent six of Albany's men over
the plate In that Inning. Moaltirie
soored one ran, making the soon 8 to 2
In favor of Albany at the end iff the
fifth.
In the sixth inning the visitors
ohanged their pttohen and put Forres
ter in the box. Olark was Mt by a
pttohed ball and soored on Farrington's
single. This added one more ran to Al
bany’s soore. Moultrie added one ran
in the sixth, making the eoore 0 to 8 in
Albany’s favor. The seventh inning
added no rani to Albany's soore. Moul
trie mads two rani in her half- At the
end of the seventh Inning the game was
called on aooount of darkness, with the
eoore 9 to 6 in favor of Albany.
The game was very Interesting
throughout. There were- several time*
when only the ooolest and most expert
playing on the part of the home team
held the soore of the visitors down. In
the sixth there were two men on bases
and one rat. One man had soared and
it looked like the Moultrie boy* were
going to even np the soore. Roohstard
strnok ont the next man np and Brown
made a beautiful catch of a hot line ball,
retiring the side.
Ruohstard showed up In good form
yesterday, allowing tbe visitors only
two soattered hits. In the seventh
inning he hart his finger and Miller
was substituted.
The following is the eoore of yester
day’s game:
