Jim Gibson, a negro, was arrested in
this oity yestorday and carried to Thom
ville yesterday afternoon on a very se
rious charge. A negro girl about four
teeu years old was criminally assaultod
in Thomasvillo a few nights ago, aud the
crime has, it seoms, been fixed upon Jim
Gibsou. b’rom all accounts the assault
was a most brutal one, aud if it is proved
that Jim Gibsou is the guilty man there
will probably be a hanging in Thomas-
ville m due course of time. Gibson
came up to Albany from Thomasvillo on
Tuesday morning, the morning after
the crime was committed, uud his ar
rest w as made by Policemau Raley.
On the contrary,
I feel inclined to believe that on the
whole it has produced more benefioial
results than it has done in jury, for it must
be remembered that it* most serious ef<
feots are seen in the oluas whom we call
unstable and degenerate—a class from
which not much good to tho human race
could be expected anyway, mud which,
if it were not injured gratifying its in
stincts for stimulants, would likely de
velop pathological symptoms in some
other way.”
This, in effect, is to say that the vic
tims of alcoholic exceBBes aro no great
losi to the world, since they would have
been of little or do value to it anyway.
The doctor speaks with high authority,
but there are many coses that, at least
to the lay mind, seem to militate against
his contention, and he ignores the fact
that no method of self-destruction causes
so much trouble, sorrow and expense
for other people as does that selected by
the druukard.
Another statement of his is that the
habit of excessive drinking is almost in
variably acquired before the age of
thirty, and that all who have passed
that age safely can bo considered im
mune to alcoholic dangers. He does not
explain just what aro the “beneficial re
sults” which iu his opinion counterbal
ance the ravages of intemperance
among those whom be calls “the nota
ble and degenerate." Some of us. says
the New York Times, cannot see those
beueliceut results very clearly.
