CONCERTED ACTION
New York, August 24 All the Lon
don papers publish artioles on the ob
jections of the Amerloan patrons of the
St. Ermins hotel to negroes, and the
suoject is muoh discussed in the hotels,
says a London dlspatoh to the Journal
and Advertiser.
Englishmen side theoretically with
the negroes while Americans as a rule
are ontspokeu the other way.
Bishop Gaines, of Atlanta, oue of the
negro delegates to the ecumenical con
ference, who caused the protest, is still
at the hotel. He said in an interview :
I have been staying at this hotel off
and on slnoe the beginning of July, and
was never better treated anywhere. I
regret exceedingly to hear that tronbie
was caused by the arrivals of Bishops
Arnett, Tanner and Derrick. I was in
Paris when the protest was made.
"I have met Americans, even from
Texas, all over the continent and re
ceived warm greetings from them.
Daring my trip through Holland,
Belginm, Germany, Switzerland, Italy
and Franoe I had not an insult from an
Amerloan or any one else.
"I sailed from New York on the St.
Louis and was treated like snv other
cabin passenger. I preached on Sunday
at the request of Senator Mitchell, of
Oregon, and General Orosvenor. Amer
ica would be the best country in the
world if it aould gat rid of its race pre
judice. Laboring white men in Europe
are oppressed os badly as is the negro in
America, except when it is a question of
law; then the laborer has the same jus
tice as his riolier brother, especially in
Great Britain. I hope to see the day
when it will be the same in America"
W. Winfield, manager of the Anglo
American bank of New York, one of the
protesting patrons of the St. Ermins
said:
"I do not object personally to Bishop
Gaines or his daughter, who are flue
people. Thoy crossed on the same
steamer with mo, and were liked by
evory one on board. He is a highly In
telligent man. But with regard to
negroes generally, I object strongly tn
their presuuoe in first-class hotels fre
quented by white people, and protest
against tho privileges accorded to them
in Enrope generally.
"It gives me a shock when I see a
beautiful girl walking at the sido of a
negro who is perhaps tier husband. As
for the attitude of Hotel Malinger Rich
ardson, I excuse him because he is an
Englishman; if ho were an American
nothing od earth would luako me do sn.
When Europeans got to kuow tho negro
ns we know him, they will curtail his
privileges."
Manager Richardson said:
"I have received numerous written
and verbal messages of congratulation
nnd indorsement of the position I have
taken."
MURDERER STILL AT LARGE,
Bst Bskcr County Officers Hope is Have Him
Answer For Hie Crime.
From Saturday's Dally Herald.
From parties from Newton who were
in the city this morning, the Hkkald
learned that persistent efforts are being
made in Baker connty to apprehend
"Bill" Miller, the negro who brutally
murdered two women of his own race
on last Tuesday night and mortally
wounded a negro boy.
An account of the tragedy was printed
in these columns at the time. Miller
went to the home of Lula Ragan, a
young negro girl, and tried to Induce
her to run away with him. She refused
and Miller became infuriated. He had
a Winchester rifle with him, and with
that weapon he opened fire. The girl
and her mother were instantly killed,
and the girl’s brother fatally wounded
He is still alive, bnt physicians say he
cannot possibly recover.
So far, Miller has eluded the officers.
It is thought that he is hiding in the
swamps of Baker county faot far from
the scene ol his crime, and that his
wher “about- are known to certain of his
friends. The governor has been re
quested to offer a reward for his cap
ture, aud will probably do so. On ac-
oount of its brutality, the people of
Baker county are very anxious to have
the crime avenged, and will spare no
pains or expense to hnnt the murderer
down.
Mark A. Hanna and William J. Bryan
have each given (100 toward lifting the
debt of Nebraska Wesleyan University.
This will certainly go down in history
as tho “wet August."
