Mr. John Rust Sees • Weird aud Suspicious
Looking Person.
About six months ago Mr. John Rust
saw on Commerce street a very peculiar
looking person, or what he Hupposed to
bo a porson. The object that met Mr.
Rust's gaze on that oconsion was tall
and draped about with a long, flowing,
black robe. The face was black, and
Mr. Rust says that it wns about two
feet long.
Boon after this Mr. Rust again saw
this strange figure this time near the
Methodist church. Tho object passed
by Mr. Rust, who describes its walk ns
being jerky and "wobbly,” accompanied
by metallic sounds, ns from the sheath
of a sword worn by an oflloer. *
Mr. Rust had not seen this strange
thing in several months, and he hud
about forgotten it until lust night, when
it again put in its appearance, this time
aft tho corner of the alley ut Mr .Tim
Tift’s home on Jefferson street. Mr.
Rust was walkiug leisurely along on the
east sidewalk going north The moon
was shlulug brilliantly, bat the high
fence about. Dr. ITilsman’s garden oaf
off the view of the mouth of the alley
When Mr. Rust came to the alley ho
looked np suddenly, and there stood the
strange, weird, figure, its long face
turned toward him and turuing slowly
so thut its gu/.s followed him us he
moved on. Mr Rust Spoke fo the per
son, saying *"good evening,” but lie re
ceived no answer. The face was turned
squarely towards him, aud the moon
was bright enough for him to see some
thing of its peculiar dimensions and its
hideous details.
Mr. Rust did not remain longer to
converse with the strange being, bu*.
went down to his room on the Rust
place and got. a negro man to go up and
watch tho person while he could go for
the police. When he und the negro re
turned, the figure had disappeared.
Mr. Rust says that others have seen
this strange being, and that ho is nft
a loss to know wlm’ or who it is II-
says he is confident that it is not
ghost, but thinks that it is a dotoctiv
or spy, disguised in order to spy on
