Washington, Oot. 7.—The Sohley

1 Today's proceedings began with the
all of Lieut. Doyle and Commander
odgers for the purpose of correcting
heir previous testimony, and of Lieut,
ommnnder Hodgson. There were a
few of the letters oorslitutiug the cor-

nd Admiral Sohley to be read.
Upon cross examination by Mr. Ray
nor, the connsel for Admiral Sohley,
Hayuor questioned the witness concern
ing his reported colloquy with Commo
dore .Sohley and asked him if Commo
dore Sohley hud used the expression,
"Damn the Toxon."
The witness! replied: "When I sug
gested the danger of colliding with the
Texas to him, ho said ‘Damn the Texas.'
le used the expression as one of irrita
tion and not of condemnation.”

HOW TO CURE HAMS.
[ Farmer, Who Hive Hof, to Kill Next Wloier
Should Kee, This.
Not every farmer knows how to cure
hams properly. Generally they take
hams, shoulders and aides and literally
bary them in salt The result is that
the meat ie too saltish to eat and the
flavor is spoiled’.
The Southern Cultivator gives the fol
lowing method of onring hams, whioh
is said to be excellent. It does not klU
the meat, bnt imparts a delioions flavor,

For one hundred pounds of hams take
eight pounds of salt, three pints of mo
lasses, a quarter of a pound of saltoetcr
in boiling water, mix all In a barrel, or
in sufficient water to cover the hams
with piokle; they should be repaoked in
three days, and after that onoe a week.
They should remain in piokle eight
weeks, and then smoke them ns much
as you like. Every time yon repaok stir
the piokle. The object of repacking
them is to have the hams on top pnt on
the bottom of the cask.

SUPERIOR COURT CONVENES.
Jndfe Spence Charges Orand Jury—Very
Light Dockets.
From Monday's Daily Herald.
Shortly before noon today Judge W.
N Spruce arrived in the city from Ca
milla and convened the October term of
Dougherty superior court.
The opening of the court was followed
by the excusing of jurors who presented
exonses satisfactory to the court, and
the drawing of the other jnrora to take
the places of those exonsed. The conrfe
then took a recess until 1:80 o’clock.
At that hour the grand jury was in
place and it soon retired and elected
Mr. W. H. Gilbert foreman, and Mr.
W. S. Walton bailiff.
Tbo judge then charged the grand
jury. Judge Spence’s charges are al
ways strong and clear, and his charge
today was unusually forceful, leaving
in the minds of the grand jurors little
donht as to what their duty was.
The dockets this term are unusually
light. There are only four jail oases,
whereas, as a rule, there are from fif
teen to twenty-five, and the civil docket
is also exceptionally light.
It is probable that the court will not
remain iu session longer than three or
four days. ^
