General Leonard Wood’s Annul Report In-
terestlni Document.
Washington, Oot. 11.—The war de
partment has made publio the annual
report of Major General Leonard Wood,
commanding the department-of Cuba for
the last flsoal year. A preceding report
treated ’of the civil administration of
the island. This report deals with mil
itary affairs entirely.
The total number of offloers and en
listed men who died during tho
year was sixty-seven, a poroont-
ago of less than 1.36. Yellow fever
has now been almost driven from
tho island, owing to the energetio war
upon the mosqnltoes and the sanitary
precautions adopted. However, during
the past summer five offloers of General
Wood’s staff were taken ill with yellow
fever and threo of them died. Among
the headquarters employes there wero
forty-eight victims to yellow fever with
eleven deaths.
General Wood devotes a good part of
his report to nfstntoment of the results
attending tho tests of the artillery forth
floations left by the Spanish and sum
marizing these, he 6ays:
"Tho^behavior of the gunB ond car
riages was rather better than expected
by the artillery officers "
The old canteen issco is revived in
this report;througli a substitute report
furnished by Inspector General Barton.
He said that tho exchange is a groat
comfort to the soldier in Ouba, who is
deprived of many of the comforts known
to him at homo. The offloers generally
oomplnin that tho elimination of peer
from tho oxohange 1ms worked a hard
ship on the soldier and has been detri
mental to good order and military dis
cipline.
General Bnrtou has some interesting
recommendations to submit, based on

Music and Its Proper Relation to Church Wor
ship— Bsssy by Cspl. Jno. A. Davis.
From Saturday’s Dally Herald.
The regular meeting of the B Y, P.
U. was held at the Baptist church last
night, and those who attended were
well repaid.'
“Mnsio and its proper relation to
ohuroh worship,” was thesubjeot of the
evening, and the programme embraoed
appropriate songs and the rending of'
Bible referouoes to mnsio. /
The fcaturo of the oveutng was an.
essay by Oapt. John A. Davis.
□apt. Davis, with characteristic
candor, made the confession that he
knew bat little or nothing of rauslo in
the abstract, ami that lio was utterly
nnablo to nmko mnsio; yet ho said he
yielded to no one iu lovo nnd apprecia
tion of good mnsio of nil kinds. He had
so often been thrilled and enraptured
bybothvorr.l and instrumental musio
that he thought he coaid safely say that
he was not subjeot to Shakspearo's
severe condemnation of the mau who
had no mnsio in his sool.
Mnoh of tho essay was dovoted to the
history of mnsio and its development,
and its gradual ndoption, with the ad
vance of civilization, as a factor in re
ligions worship. Tim legendury lore
tonohed upon and the many historical
references nrndo showed conclusively
that the essayist Had gouo deeply into
bis subjeot, and the essay was not only
ontortnlnlng, but instructive.
After clearly showing that tho ohnroh
had played an important port in tho
origin aud development of musio, Oapt.
Davis took a decided stand for good mu
sio, artlstln musio, vooal nnd instrumen
tal—even though paid oholrs Imvo to be
employed—in our ohurolics. To sustain
his position he laid down four proposi

The readers of this paper will be
pleased to learn that there is at least one
dreaded diseases that science has been
able to cure in all its stages and that is
catarrh. Hull’s Catarrh Care is the only
positive cure now known to the medical
fraternity. Catarrh being a constitu
tional disease, requires a constitutional
treatment. Hall’s Catarrh Cure is
taken internally, acting directly upon
the blood and mucous surfaces of the
system, thereby destroying the founda
tion of the disease, and giving the pa
tient strength by building up the consti

work. The proprietors have so much
