Not a Very Qood Day For Democracy—Baltimore
Went Republican, But General Assembly of Mary
land May Be Democratic on Joint Ballot.
New York, Nov. 6.—Complete on-
-official returns trom most of the dis
tricts ot Greater New York give Setb
Low, fusion candidate for major, a
plurality of 29,814 over Sliepard, demo
cratic candidate. So badly was Uayor
Yan Wyok scratched that the returns
indicating his vote for justice of the su
preme oourt are late, and it is dlffloult
even to attempt an estimate of the final
figures, but it is believed he will run
nearly 80,000 behind his associates on
oounty and judicial tickets. All the fu-
sionlst candidates for jnstioe of the su
preme court are elected, and all the
democratic candidates beaten. The leg
islature is unobanged.
Gorman May be Senator.
Baltimore, Nov. 6 —The latest returns
in this oity indicate that it was carried
by the Republicans by about 8,000. It
is still possible that the general assembly
is democratic on joint ballot, in whioh
event A. P. Gorman will again beoome
United States Senator from Maryland.
This YVns Foregone Conclusion.
Philadelphia, Pa., Nov. 6,—Frank G.
Harris, republican, is elected Btate

Made by many a man for taking a drink
at the har is that he needs a bracer. He
feels weak, his stomach is "out of aorta”
and liquor makes him "feel good.” The
tired man who sits
on a pin leaps up
with new energy,
but no one would
say that thia
energy waa evi
dence of the
strength giving
power of a pin.
So with the en
ergy induced by
liquors. They
only spur the body
on, but do not
strengthen it.
Strength is made
from food prop
erly digested and
assimilated.
When the stom
ach. is diseased
there is a failure
to extract the nutrition from food and
the body grows weak. The weak body
needs strengthening, not stimulating.
Dr. Pierce’s Golden. Medical Discovery
cures diseases of the stomach and other
organs of digestion and nutrition, so that
the nutrition of food is perfectly ex
tracted and assimilated and the body
nourished into health and strength.
There is no alcohol in " Golden Medical
Discovery,” and it is entirely free from
opium, cocaine and all other narcotics.
Accept no substitute for " Golden Med
ical Discovery.” There is no other medi
cine " just as good ” for diseases of the
stomach and allied organs.
"Your ‘Golden Medical DUcovery’ and Dr.
laae'n Catarrh Remedy have been of great
xnefit to me," write* (l’rof.) Pleaiaut A. Oliver,
of Viola, Fulton Co.. Ark. "Before I used the
above mentioned remedies my sleep wn* not
sound: digestion bad; a continual feeling of
misery. 1 now feel like a new man."

a young white woman, was found dead

DANGEROUS COUNTERFEIT BILLS.
Tbe Whole Issue of Indian Head Bills Mty
Be Recalled.
Springfield, Ohio, November 6 —The
flooding of this oity with $8 counterfeit
hills was dono by a party of six strang
ers, four men and two women, who are
thonght to be professional counterfeit
ers from the East, who mado the goods
there and are now traveling over the
country disposing of the same. They
did not remain very long bnt kept going
from store to store making small par
ohaBes and offering these bills in pay
ment for them.
A. R. Oobaugh, cashier of the first
National Bank, was the first to deteot
the oonnterfeit, whioh is a $5 certificate
of government issue with the Indian
head thereon. The certificates are the
finest of counterfeits, but are
about one eighth of an inoh shorter
than the good bills, and a slight
roughness of the snrfaoe is noticed
in this paper. A leading banker is au
thority for the statement that the
counterfeit is so extensive that the gov
ernment will have to reoall the entire
isBne. He also stated that when the
bank clearings are made Monday after
noon from 200 to 500 will be discovered
here. The police think that every large

Charles Bigler one after the police had
been notified. The hanks refused in all

Wife of a Conspirator Gave
the Plot Away.
Washington, Nov. 8.—The death of
Li Hang Ohang will not, it le believed,
affeot the exeontion of the undertakings
imposed upon Ohlna in the protocol.
A ohange in the Manohnrian situa
tion is expected, however, and the United
States has a very oonsiderale interest in
the outcome of that matter. LI Hnng
Ohang is regarded here as strongly pro-
RnBslan and it is possible that his death,
and the ooming into power in Ohiua as
the director of foreign affairs of another
prinoe, less friendly to Russia, might
hasten the day when Russia mnst relax
her hold upon Manohnria, and allow
the oountry to be opened to the com
merce of the world.

Washington, NoV. fl - —The Climax of
the Sohley oonrt of inquiry oame this
afternoon when Mr. Rayner,, the chief
counsel for Admiral Sohley, oonolnded .
a brilliant nrgnment of over three hour*
with a peroration so eloquent and im
passioned that all within tbe sound ot
bisvoloe were profoundly touched. In
vivid oolors he painted the piotnre of
the Brooklyn with Commodore Sohley
on the bridge fighting the entire Spanish
fleet nntll the Oregon appeared ont ot
tho smoke. The thunders ot the Brook
lyn, music for the ears of his oountry-
men, he said, aroused Admiral Sohley’a
envious foes. He pictured the viotorl-
ours sailor Buffering as few have suffered
for three long yean while the fires of
persecution leaped around him, and
now awaiting the hoar of his vindica
tion in the verdlot of the oonrt. Tbe
ooena.ln.the court.roQin qa Mr. Rayner
finished'waa thrilling. The attendance
had been large oil day, and at the morn
ing session a lady had fainted from ex
citement. Aft Mr. Rayner began his
enlogyof Admiral Sohley those in the
andlenoe, many of whom were ladies,
leaned forward in their seats. The
spell of his oratory was over ythem, and
when he desorlbed the Admiral's gal
lant deeds and the lODg persecution to
whioh he had been snbjeoted, many ot
them broke down and wept. The mem
bers of the oourt displayed evidenoes of
emotion, and Admiral Sohley himself
was plainly moved. He sat leaning
book, with his hands behind his
head. His ohin twitched, and as his
coauoil said he oonld afford to await the
verdlot of posterity, two big tears rolled
down his .oheeks. He moved uneasily
to oonoeal his emotion and nnder the
pretense of adjusting his glasses brushed
the tears aside. For foil thirty seoondS
after Mr. Rayner olosed there was not
a sound. Then tbe tension broke in a
loud burst of applause. Admiral Dewey»
after about a half minute, arose to re
mind the speotators that suoh a demon
stration was out of place. A moment'
afterward the oonrt adjourned, the
jndge advooate pleading that he cold not
well go on today. Then another re
markable thing happened: As soon as
the gavel fell the entire audience surged
forward ttf shake the hands ot Admiral
Sohley-and Mr. Rayner. Bnt the on-
ooming spectators fell-book a moment ns
they saw Admiral Dewey and his
two associates move around the table, as
it by a common lmpnlse, and congratu
late Admiral Sohley and his counsel.
Even Oapt. Lemly, the jndge advooate,
oame forward to join in the Congratula
tions. Then tho publio held its inning
and’for fifteen minutes after the oonrt
adjourned Admiral Sohley and Mr.
Rayner were kept busy shaking hands.
