ID.-By the ex- p'osion of gas in the Sopo furuanoe of Jones & Laughlina this morning ten men were burned to death and probably twenty others fnjucad. The damage to the plant is twenty thousand Hollars. The men were at work at the top of the blast fnrnaee ISO feet from the ground. They were employed as fillers and were just getting ready to quit work, being members of the night shift, when gas whioh had accumulated in the furnace exploded and tons of molten olnders and slag were thrown over the unfortunate men on the Tom of the structure. A panto ensued. To jump meant death, and to remain on the platform was certain death. Tons of molten metal and flames fell upon them ami i burned ten men to dentil. Theii bodies droppod to the roof of the mill So feet below. Every bone was broken and the bodies became an unrecognizable mass of human flesh. Stalina, Oal., Deo. 10.—The north bound Sunset express on the Southern Paoiflo and the Sunset express from SAn Francisco ^ere in collision this morn ing half a mile west of Uplands. They were completely wrecked, the engines thrown from the track, several oars tele scoping. One traiu was partly destroyed by fire. It is reported that ten or twelve persons were killed and fifty injured. Washington, Deo. 10.—The seuato hold only a brief session today and ad journed until January G. After the vote on the Philippines’ revenue bill yesterday there was a gen eral exodus of the members of the house for their homes to sptud Christmas, and today, when the house met, there was a wasteiof vacant seats. The session of the house was brief. * _ NO ALAKM FOR SAMPSON. Admiral Sampson's condition remains unchanged. Thirty Houses, Mostly Shanties, and Some Street Shows Destroyed. Charleston, Deo. 19.—Fire this morn ing destroyed fourteen buildings in the upper part of the city. They were most ly small shanties and the total loss is only $80,000. Among the places burned were several street shows here for tho exposition. Me- Prominent Woman in Pittsburg Pound Dead at Her Home—Murderer Escaped. Pittsburg, Deo. 17.—Harriet P. Mur phy, prominent in church and society olrcles and treasurer of the Kingsley House was found murdered in her home in East end. Sho was murdered by a burglar about 8 o’clock this morning. Estimated Damage of the Floods In the State of Pennsylvania. Philadelphia. Deo. 17.—The railroad service of this state whioh was badly crippled by the floods of Saturday and Sunday is gradually recovering to its normal condition. In the lower anthra cite region, however, the situation is growing worse. Mine workings are thoroughly soaked and it may be weeks before some of them can be worked Fifty thousand mine workers are idle as result of the flood.
