remembering that it is the “cold hammer

to know all, and our readers nothing. Wo
Inn e endeavored to give tho facts, and leave
our readers to form their own opinions, be
lieving they had intelligence sufficient to
do so.
Ill geneivd our friend shave come up nobly

I have been hitherto silent, thinking the
“Hump Congress,” who seem to have* com

bet us look, for a moment, nt what has
lieeudonc since the surrender of the Confed

tant propositions submitted us by the Fed
oral Government were, to rescind' the ordi
nance of secession, repudiate the war debt,
and ratify the ('(institutional Amendment
emancipating our slaves, and declaring t hem
forever free. All this was done readily.
Arcording to their teachings during the
war, it, was not necessary to rescind the or
dinance of Recession, heeauso they waged
and continued the war, and finally, by their
immensely superior numbers, succeeded in
whipping ns, upon the ground t hat wo had
no constitutional right to secede, lfy that
logic, then, the ordinance id’ secession was
a mere nullity^ of itself. So was tho war

which Congress expressly declared not to
be the object of the war—which deelnrat ion
was approved hy President Lincoln, ami
which stood unrepealed upon the statute
hooks of the Fnitod States at the close of the
war. Hut still the measure was pressed, and
our convention pnssed tlio necessary ordi
nance. In this they done .wrong. If the
Federal Government intended to take our
property from us, let them doit by pouch.
