lured in Uetoher, IH(RI,aud spent sly. months
in (lamp Morton. In MniVh, lsdi, I was
ronmvetl to Kort llelewatv, where I remain-
o«l until June, IHOA. The winter of 18»J.‘l
—’4 is well known to have been intensely
severe.
Many rebel prisoners, to my own know
ledge, snentthat winter without a blanket,
ami in the scant and ra^edsumuie^eloth-
in# worn wheu captured. Tlio lmrmekM
wore tlio old eattle sltetls used when the
prison was a fair ground, anil open enough
for the winter winds to sweep through free
ly. Scopes of the men lit tip* dead of win
ter sleet in these sheds, upon tin* hare
ground, without covering, huddling togeth
er like hogs to keep!rout freeze.
It is well known to hundreds now living
that several died, actually frozen to death,
while a large number were so badly frost
bitten as to lie lamed for life.
During tlie larger portion of the time the
hospital arrangements worn shamefully de
ficient, and by many ol tin; surgeons aiid at
tendants tlie sick were not only grossly neg
lected but most inhumanly treated.
Men barely able to era w 11 It rough weari
ness from iusiillhsient food and disease eon-
sequent upon exposure, were ibrued, in the
severest winter weather, to stand at roll
call for two ami often three or more horn’s
iu line, like soldiers on dress purndc, nnd
cursed like brutes or beaten over tlm heads
with sabres or clubs, and sometimes shot at
for moving a little to keep from frej/.iiig,—
In severnf ilistnneos prisoners were shot on
the most frivolous iiretexts. A quiet order
ly man, an Kiiglishmaii named Coats, be
longing to my division was murdered in
old blood by a nrivate of the Invalid Corps
named Baker, who was on guard.
Instead of being tried and ptiuished, Ba
ker, though a private, was sent next morn
ing to take chargOj as Sergeant, of our divi
sion, iu which position he heaped upon tlie
defenceless men every indignity that so in
human a wretch could devise.
At the very time that mielt an outcry
was raised about the mortality among
Northern soldiers iu Sourhern prisons, the
inmates oPJamp Morton knew the mor
tality then iu pro|K)rtiou to Ihe number ol
men to be several per cent, greater.
At Fort Doloware our barracks were
more comfortable, but tbc rations were mis*
orablv insutficiont, and prisoners who could
not obtain money from friends with which
to procureextra supplies from the siittlers
Buttered tlie pangs of hunger day and night,
and reduced to skeletons, and eaten up by
scurvey from scanty and unwholesome food
fell ready victims to disease, nnd died by
hundreds.
At the close of the war, id about seven
thousand men in ene |k*ii.
